For anyone wondering what the title means."This song is about lead singer Jesse Lacey's fear that he will one day burn out or fall from grace.Diego Maradona is an Argentine soccer player who led his country to the World Cup in 1986, faltered due to drug use. Elvis Presley had a brilliant singing career before drugs and health problems took their toll. Both men had spectacular talents but lost it all. "
I always thought there was another underlying story of a guy who preys on drunk and vulnerable women at bars too? nonetheless, a story of falling from grace
one of their best songs... deja entendu was the shit back in the days and is still my second all time favorite album...(behind the devil and god of course, haha)
I love Jesse Lacey. He is amazing. This song is so good. Vinnie wrote this song, and i love it. I just want to wrap my arms around Jesse in this video! great angle. love the vid.
This is still so... SO good. The last time i saw them was in Albany, NY like 12 years ago but I got to see them two nights in a row because they split the shows by albums and I had to be at both 😂
Jesse said in an interview that the title of the song comes from a dream he had where he had this fight with Maradona and Elvis, two legends who kind of made huge messes of themselves in the latter part of their lives.
that's why most musicians stop making music after a while or at least putting it out there. their "fans" are so entranced in what they used to be, now who they are.
mannn try and go to a brand new show and not sing, i went to the one at san jose last friday... omg. everyone was getting into and singing... it was amazinnnnnnnnnng
@ChocolatePoop1301 I can see that you posted this comment almost a year ago, but I really hope that you have gotten their other albums. "The Devil and God..." and "Daisy" are both masterpieces, and might even be better than "Deja."
Deja is my personal favorite. I really enjoy the Devil and God, and Your Favorite Weapon has a couple good ones...Soco Amaretto Lime is my favorite off that album.
@calmncollected10 hey i have listened to Brand New since deja came out, so i guess you would call me an "original fan"... but i dont think i could ever pick a favorite Brand New record. weapon, deja, devil and god, the fight off your demons demos, daisy... they are all amazing. they are all highly unique collections of art that i love to much to judge which one is best.
Ha I think this song is about frustration with the whole stupid way we conduct relationships, and jesse is saying how its all just a bit pointless going out, getting drunk and pulling some random.
@symbiot90 Look on Ultimate Guitar. There's a guitar pro tab that's near perfect. If you don't have GP, get TuxGuitar- it's a freeware program, virus-free, that can open GP files. That's how I learned this one.
yeah... someone earlier said something about jesse's lyrics but they are vinnies.. even though jesse is a god at writing haha. but i thought vin deserved his credit. he writes alot of the darker songs on deja entendu like the quiet things and sic transit gloria, and others:)
you know it is possible that he's not singing about himself! i personally think the metaphorical meaning is the most realistic but if its the litteral meaning then it could just be a story!
I figured this song out on my own, and looking at what Jesse plays in this video, I'm pretty sure it's spot-on. Tell me if you want me to type up some tabs for you.
i try :) and ocelot600 and always6or7, though i agree with both of you that some of these interpretations are pretty ridiculous, it's still pointless and a bit rude to call people potentially hurtful names. we're all people here behind our usernames. no need to try to bring anyone else down.
i can definitely see how you can interpret the song as fear of burining out, but its not the most obvious to me, and some of the lyrics don't make too much song if you use that interpretation. the comparison to elvis and maradona seems to be more about their lifestyle than the decline in their careers. its not just about taking advantage of drunk girls either though. for one thing, i never put emphasis on her being drunk. it sounds to me much more like she just wants to sleep with a rockstar.
its not about raping a girl he uses a drunk girl as a metaphor... the song is about jesse's fear of burning out one day or not being as big as he once was... think about the title... i mean come on people your listening to brand new here you got to be more open minded
JK880715 you're close, but wrong. it's about the banning of international trade :( the drunk girl is china and the guy taking "her" out is america. everything else is a metaphor for eating even when you're full, because you're at your favorite restaurant and you hate left-overs. nobody understands jesse's words like i do :(
You guys are looking to deep into his meaning of the song, plus it's HIS meaning, you're supposed to interpret the song anywhichway you want to, there's no wrong way.
1. i was kidding 2. JK880715, you're thinking of "good to know that if i ever need attention all i have to do is die." if i were you, i'd be really embarrassed!!!
