Surely LED keys were the order of the day? Imagine the red, yellow, green and blue ‘ribbon’ floating from right to left or maybe a nice fade….:D

The first you showed those gray flat cables I was thinking - "those look really crappy and cheap, what a shame". Guess what - they were junk. Good job, looking forward to the case!

Well done! LM1889n are still available from Radwell in the US, UK, and Mexico. New stock is still available for under $8 US each.

The headers on both the keyboard and mainboard was a great idea ! Don't you just hate getting cheap trashy cables with a new keyboard ?

Hi, I just wanted to say that a couple of keys on my self-built harlequin 48k speccy haven't been working for a long time. This video gave me the info I needed to diagnose the problem. I.e. testing each of the 40 key traces. Your video allowed me to confirm that its one of the traces on the keyboard membrane that is broken. I was even able to find the break! Thanks!

Very nice! However, if you're designing a new case, why not go all in and update the keyboard layout? I'd love to see a proper space bar, big enter key, duplicated shift key, and some combo keys like backspace and cursor keys. Might even stick a microcontroller in to map extra keys to the key matrix to avoid the dual layer issues of the Spectrum+ keyboard.

Which Cherry switches did you use ? And did you say there were two pins per switch to solder ?

Looking at the datasheet for the LM1889n, it doesn't look like a too complex circuit. I mean, the ULA was reverse engineered, and the LM1889n has full schematics in the datasheet. It should be very doable to create a modern replacement.

As almost everybody replaces the RF output with some kind of video output mod the LM1889n is not needed in it's entirety so probable small PCB with few SMD resistors and transistors will do the trick.
