This may be a duplicate, my first message apparently went to the great nowhere. I have recently retired from a large Municipal Water Company. My job was in the construction and maintenance of the system. We continuously sampled and tested water in order to maintain records for the EPA. Our water system had its own laboratory and tested water for neighboring Water Agencies and peoples well water. The laboratory always had the most modern up-to-date equipment for testing water. Many of the more knowledgeable people who worked in that lab felt that the EPA standards followed technology if it was able to be measured the EPA wanted it to be removed. They felt that often times it was a Government desire to have something done even though it was probably not necessary. That argument is far beyond my knowledge. At the extreme is ultrapure water used in computer chip manufacturer. So much is removed from that water that if you drink a very very small amount it reacts inside your body so strongly with anything it touches that you can feel the heat and the upset immediately. Aeration can be used to precipitate much of the iron out of solution so that it can be more easily filtered out. If you have long-term concerns about the effects of the water I would maintain the rainwater catchment system to provide potable water to the kitchen and filter that water as needed. I would use the well water for gardens, fire protection and possibly the animals who are not exposed to the water for decades. Keep in mind that in the bathroom when you shower a lot of things can out gas from the water and you breathe them in some of those things are dangerous, particularly radon if it exists in your water supply.

Try putting a fish tank bubbler in your tank it will oxidize the iron and of course oxygenate the water as well, also a large magnet from a old microwave on the outlet of the tank to the house should soften the water just some old tricks from australia that actually work cheers

Had a 300 foot well dug in SC, took a long time to clear the new well, had my water tested twice a month, was always powering bleach down it and pumping it out. What a pain. Installed filters, it helped.

We went through the same thing. Don’t forget what you don’t filter out of the water, you become the filter when you drink it. We use Aquasana water filter system .

When we moved to our current house the well casing had a big hole rusted through right at ground level. I immediately fixed it but it took a lot of bleach and filters to get it cleaned up.

I remember visiting my in-laws homestead after drilling a well. The water had a lot of iron in it. Laundry was a nightmare. All things became dingy. Toilets and tubs became rusty looking. They were happy to have gotten a water softening system to solve the problem. 😊

We also have a well and pump our water into a tank, but it looks quite clean in the tank. Our problem is the high content of fluorides which lead to joint pain after drinking this water for a few months. We use an RO filter for our drinking water and for cooking, but for washing dishes, shower and all other things we use the unfiltered water.

Letting it run is the best thing you can do to clean out a new well. Water softener and water filters should do the rest. Stay safe.

hello Martin, as you drilled your well i made a comment under that video, and saw it straight away that it was iron. As always you have 2 options. 1. you need one storage tank and in this you pump the water under very high pressure about 10 psi so it sprays in your storage tank. The idea behind is, through that spraying the water can take oxygen and reacts with the iron, which will settle down at 3 - 4 days. Above the settlement you can take the Water and pump it through a Filter and wallah cristall clear. Remark: It must spray 2. An Ionexchanger will do the same work only a little bit smarter but you still have to filter it after the ionexchanger. 3. An "aktivated carbon" Filter should be the last Filter which you need, that you can take the water in the house, to avoid any problems with watertabs espcially the washmaschine and dishwasher. As a german brewmaster i hope my english is understandable

I'm in the panhandle and our well was similar to yours. Rust can take a bit of time to show up if you fill a glass. We went with a Culligan system and softens, removes the rust and sulfur smell. Works well for us.

I used a combo water softener and whole house filter for SoCal city water. It made a big difference in how long plumbing lasted. I used a G.E. Softener and a culligan filter. I would put the filter before the softener for your water to keep out the silt and keep the salt/potassium pellets clean.

I would recommend a whole house Reverse Osmosis filter with a mineralization post filter. The standard setup for the whole house filter is to pre treat it before sending it through an RO filter. The pre treatment is highly custom to your tested water. Generally the water must be softened and filtered for sediment. The water is then passed through a reverse osmosis membrane and separated into permeate (filtered water) and concentrate (waste water). The filtered water is then stored in a storage tank. You can make the membrane more efficient by using a post filter storage tank that is unpressurized (for no back pressure against the RO membrane). This also means you must run an additional pump from the RO storage tank.

I know you filter your water but be careful about using regular garden hose (not good for drinkable water) they make a food grade hose for RV's. I have a well at my house and we use in this order a whole house -10 micron sediment filter, water softener, arsenic filter, iron & manganese filter, carbon filter and UV light. my water is very high in iron, even my set up wont take out all of the iron. I have to use a bleach system sometimes to remove the excess iron which I don't like to use, nothing like drinking bleach water. hope this helps.

We had to install an iron / manganese filter , looks just like a water softener, then a traditional water softener before our well water was reasonable. We also did carbon block whole house 10” canisters too then it tasted good . The deeper you go the more mineral s you get.

I live in the Texas Hill Country and the water is rock hard from the well. I have a whole house filtration/softener system. I will have the same system when I move up to Alaska for my homestead.

Different minerals in the water requires different filter types, here in Finland the company that manufactures the filters does the water analyze and from that offers the best filter for that type of water.

Really loving your way of life ,we live in northern Ireland and all on grid with mains water ,makes me appreciate the water out of our tap,hope you get the filtering sorted otherwise as someone said just use the well water to wash and city water for drinking .take care .

I use a very large pool sand filter for the water to bathe and clothes and I have berkey water filters for drinking and cooking. Use iron out on your whites if they get dingy. They will be brighter than new.

Whole house water filter is the way to go, send your lab results to the filter manufacturer, they should be able to tell you what you need! Also check the water for radon!

Regular chlorine shocking annually and routine pumping outside is a good way to develop the well and keep fluctuating ecoli and coliform levels moderate . Nice video and homestead. Can't wait to see more.

I use a filter from Aqua-Pure in my house. It attaches to the water pipes before going into the water softener. The filter uses replaceable cartriges to clean out impurieties.

My dad had very silty water and he had to install a multi filter system. It is a very impressive looking system. Probably ask your well people about it.

I like your videos! I live in the mountains of Virginia and have a similar problem, high iron content. Without filtration It's like licking a piece of angle iron. I use the standard whole house filter made with charcoal and a water softener with the brand of salt made for iron removal. Some of the iron is from the ground and some is from the iron well pipe. Everytime the submersible pump starts the pump and hose twist slightly scraping off some rust inside the well pipe. All that said, I'm lucky I have water. There are some high end houses in this county that have very deep wells drilled and did not strike water. They had to have a cistern buried and pay to have water trucked in to fill it.

You should have the water coming out of your countertop filter tested. That would give you a benchmark for a whole house filter, or just replumbing the kitchen sink to use water from a large version of that style filter and leave all the other water as "good enough to wash with".

When i was young (long time ago) in Vietnam we use sand and charcoal to filter the water. You could feed the well water into a elevated swimming pool sand filter or cathride filter (better) and let it drip into the water storage.

I am building a skoolie, 2-100 gal water tanks. I bought replacement filters for a Community size LifeStraw and have them set up on the line into the tank fill. These are supposed to be able to filter a huge amount of water. No problems yet, just a thought!!

Mine looks like that every time we come back to our house and turn it all on after sitting idle for 6 months... once we're there and the water runs for a few hrs it clears up... and a 5 micron filter cleans up the rest!

We live in North Central Washington. We have a whole house sediment filter and charcoal filter in the well house. The water then gets pumped to our storage tank. From the storage tank it goes into the house through another sediment filter and then through a charcoal filter. This runs through all our water lines in the house. All drinking water goes through ceramic filters similar to your drinking water setup. Every spring when the weather warms up and the water starts flowing below ground our water has the color of lemonade. This goes away after the thaw. We have had the water tested even with the lemonade color and it tests OK.

I will be putting a water filter in my bladder tank house. Water coming in from well I think will hit bladder first then filter then house. The filter we pick will filter out arsenic along with other sediments in the water

When I had a well drilled back in 1976 it was 368 feet deep. I had to run the pump for 9 days before it finally ran crystal clear. Not uncommon with a drilled well. I wound up pumping the water into a wooden tank with a capacity of 3000 gallons. The well was in New Hampsire.

Water softener and a filox filter for the iron. You’ll also need a sediment filter. Watts sells some really good ones. That’ll take care of everything you need.

Ours is 600 feet in Wittmann, AZ, When it was first drilled it looked like chocolate milk for several days, now it is crystal clear after running/using about 25000 gallons. I use a 100 micron spin down filter for my first stage and it catches what I am guessing to but iron, it has a reddish tint. I plan on adding a whole house filter system (if our permits ever get finalized.)

Kinetico water softener (great system and uses a lot less salt) and ozone iron filter. Worked great for us when we lived in IL, our water was as red as blood right out of the ground.

You should have an rv water hose as garden hoses can leave a taste/ other products from rubber in your water.

I worked for water plumbing/pump company, an we scheduled a 1-gallon bleach added to well every year! Open the furthest water outlet from pump, let water flow until you smell bleach from water. Then shut off water usage an wait at least an hour, more if possible! Then open an run pump through all water sources (kitchen sink, bathroom sink & tub, all outside sources, etc., everything) until no more bleach smell! Then close off all system, do this at least once a year!

We had a simular problem and we pumped 30 hrs and it started clearing So we pumped another 24 and it cleared Even more after 10 years it's a great well. Lots of Data in your area where ever

You can remove a bit of the dissolved Iron just by oxidising the water in the cistern. Put a sprinkler on the inlet from the well and then let the water settle and the top water flow to another cistern that you use

Nice explanation of the system. As a water plant operator there are a few things to consider. Iron bacteria is not good as well as excessive Iron . Removal of Iron is easy to do. Here is the chemistry to understand. Iron in the water rusts with the addition of chlorine (liquid) up to 7 parts per million. At this point the water turns orange as you saw. This is the time you run the water thru a sand filter to capture the iron flakes. By adding a dechlorination chemical ( check with the health department local or state) you may have different rules than I operated at. Once the free residual drops below .5 parts per million it is safe from iron and chlorine and clear. Other ground minerals are a separate issue and different treatment. I am impressed with you’re determination and work man/ woman ship.. 👍 What a team.❤️

The addition of chlorine is safe and kills the bacteria. Don’t freak out about this because the leach line is in the area and you don’t want that to cross contaminate the fresh water.

We have a 144Ft well here in southern Ontario. We use a jet pump inside the house and no water storage tank - just the pressure tank. The foot valve is about 25Ft down. From the jet pump it goes into the pressure tank. From there we have a 10” big blue filter housing with a Pentek R50-BB Pleated Polyester filter cartridge just to remove some of the big sediment. From the 50mic filter it then runs into an iron filter then a water softener. The iron filter and water softener have been set up to back wash according to the water hardness we have here. After the softener it goes into another 10” BB with a Pentek DGD-5050 Spun Polypropylene filter cartridge. From the 5mic filter it then goes into a Trojan UV light and that feeds the entire house (minus the exterior garden hose - that goes through our 50mic filter only) We change our 50mic filter every 3 months and the 5mic every 6 months. There have been times where the water pressure is low and the 50mic filter/housing is completely filled with sand! That has happened about 4 times in the past 10 years though… The 5mic filter even after 6months is usually in pretty good shape. Keep up the hard work! Love the progress. All the best!!

We put in a reverse osmosis system and uv light. After all of that we use a berkey water filter system and we use that for our drinking water. It was well worth the cost for everything.

@@keithmaddox01 Yes, but the requirements are not the same as well water. Oh, BTW, did you watch their recent video where he had to replace a lot of the piping because it froze and broke? He is now going to insulate the pumphouse.They have done a fantastic job of building their home, and I am looking forward to them moving in.

You guys should look into an ozone treatment system for your cistern. We're running one in our 3,000 gallon tank and it has done wonders for our water quality, coupled with a carbon block filter and UV sanitizer at the house.

We have a 310-foot well at our N. Idaho property. We run the water through a whole-house filter as it comes out of the pressure tank and goes into the main house supply line. The filter has a clear plastic housing and replaceable 10" cartridges. You can get different kinds of cartridge, but be aware that the lower the microns, the slower the flow. We've settled on 30-micron "sediment" filters because the water flows through them easily and we don't have any odors or other water issues that would warrant a charcoal filter.

A well has veins where the water flows in, the more you use it the better, if you don’t run the water often those veins close up and can cause you problems, so main thing is use the water or run the well everyday. Continued Success Fabrizio

God bless you, you seem to have more than enough advice, but as a well driller and pump installer for thirty years the best advice i can give you is let run. It's very hard to clear a well up with out shore power so your going to have to buy lots of gas and let it run until it's crystal clear as your bottle water. If it clouds up again, run it some more. I've never in 30 years had a well that would not eventually clear up. Then collect another sample and treat iron, ph ,or whatever else you have to deal with. Reli on the expertise of a reputable well contractors advice, we're no smarter than anyone else, just have lots of experience that in the long run saves you heartache and money. Use a reverse osmosis setup. Might want to consider a larger storage reservoir, concrete rings, and pump from there. Allows the sediment to settle, then booster pump it to the house. You are really doing some good things out there, and are on the right track. God bless and keep y'all....

we have a whole house water filter 1 micro we had to change it every couple weeks now 6 years later it is every 6-8 months. best thing we ever did.

WE have an Ecosystem water filtration system. It consists of 2 steel tank cylinders (about 10 gallons each) that contain the filtering rock and sand about 10 layers each). This system has a backflush for the filters on it that occurs every 2 days that you can setup. The backflush is very important to get rid of the filtered junk. It even has a bleach insertion pump that you can inject into the filter system at times if needed. We have had this in operation for 17 years with no problems and our water always tests good.

I have a whole house filter system and softener from lowes. runs good for me. I have two of the small prefilters instead of one and bought the upgraded activated carbon filters, then this huge filter that feeds the softener. I use the regular sun crystals but they make them also that removes iron as well. I love it honestly, I mean I can drink water out of any tap now and when you shower you feel and get cleaner and cloths wash much better because they rinse better

Replaceable wound string filters work for a steady flow such as well to tank, the big sand filters used for swimming pools will cope with huge flows and fine filtration, but need cleaning occasionally. Soluble impurities will need removing by complicated precipitation or by a de-ioniser or softener system using resin based systems.

A sand/ gravel filter for the chunks, A reverse osmosis system would help for the nasty bits. Although some decent gutters and a covered rain barrel might be a quick solution for internal stuff as rain is still pure enough to drink fresh from the sky

I’d do a 3 stage water filter and then an ultraviolet light filter. If the water is too hard then also add a water softener. Though you might be just fine without it. We didn’t need one when we lived up there 🙂

Martin, I live in western PA and have the same type of water. My well is 360 deep and has both particulate (red color) iron and highly dissolved iron ( turns fixtures orange after sitting overnight). Lived here 40 years dealing with softener after softener. They aren't made to deal with this much iron over time. I contacted a MAJOR water quality company, they came and did testing and recommended a system over $4000. I purchased the same components from amazon for under 900. Big Blue 20" filter 55$ 64000 grain water softener 649$ 4 pack of polyester spun filters 20-1 micron 44$ I add bleach directly to my well. I never get any smell of chlorine in the house. install is in this order: from pump- 20" filter-softener-house supply. Best water we've ever had.

When I purchased my house it had a water softner. the well had allot of iron. After I installed a iron filter the water was soft.

Considering you land, to filter your water, I'd probably make and inline biochar filter. It's all stuff you can do your self and any extra you make can be turned into the soil to help you grow plants.

Green sand filter to lower iron. The arsenic will also drop when you remove the suspend materials in the water.

For grid down situations, I have been researching the Bio-sand filter. This would just be for drinking in a situation when you don't have any other options to filter your drinking water.

After a regular particle filter, I would recommend a UV filter tube. I'm not sure of the power usage with the current ones are, been years since I had one.

I've seen a second tank used for settling out silt before it goes to the storage tank. First tank would need to be flushed from time to time to remove built up silt.

Loose the countertop filter and get a under-counter 5 stage RO setup. So much better filtration, easier to use at about the same price.

Our typical treatment solution for a case like yours would be a sediment filter for any large particulate, peroxide injection to drop the iron out of solution, then a whole house RO system to remove the arsenic and anything else. We would also inject anti-scalant at the RO to prolong the life of the membranes. Our whole house RO systems also include a uv light to neutralize any bacteria that could develop inside the storage tank. This depends on which type of arsenic you have though. You might be able to get away with a point of use RO system for drinking and cooking. Water treatment isnt particularly cheap but water is life. Invest in quality equipment with a good warranty and post sale customer support.

An aggregate back wash system works great for the iron removal. A uv is nice also but if iron isn't adequately removed prior to passing through the bulb chamber it will bake on to the quartz sleeve and alarm all the time as the uvt will be reduced. Best of luck finding your best system.

You may have thought of this already, but if you always get dirty water on initial startup then I suggest installing the equivalent of a “first flush diverter” as used in rainwater roof collection systems. These divert the initial catchment from the roof, which is typically dirty, so only clean water enters the storage tank. You would set it up at the inlet to your tank. It would need to be sized for the amount of dirty water your well produces before it becomes clear. They can be made as big as you need. There are numerous designs if you search on google.

Filtering: Personally, a double plumbing system. One for "drinking/cooking" the other for "washing/waste/watering". System one is on a 100ish gallon gravity fed multi-filter RO unit, the other is on a larger/faster sand and carbon filter system. Granted it essentially doubles your structures plumbing (and may or may not be allowed in your residential code) but years ago I worked on an island at a research lab, and this is what they (Australian gov) used to support the housing/labs...

Under counter RO setups are cheaper than doubling the plumbing and you really only need drinking/cooking water in the kitchen sink.

@@LenstersH that kinda depends on a lot of factors, but I agree, at a bare minimum, that could work. But in a modern home with at least 4 people, the expectations of on demand supply, and multiple access points (even something like 2-3 baths for brushing teeth), a more robust supply might be desirable. Given their level of rust, a multi tier and parallel/separate systems my be desired to preserve the fixtures, and surfaces from rust staining alone...

To get clean water for drinking have you thought about using a distiller? We have small 3 + liter distiller on a counter for our drinking water. There are larger ones that are automatic with storage tanks and optional pump to supply your drinking water faucet. Good luck

My well is 180' deep and I have an air lift system instead of a pump down in the well. A compressor pushes air down the the well and it blows the water up into the holding tank. The well driller said that without the air system the water would be orange from iron ore.

We have a 140 year old farmhouse set in the middle of corn fields, in Central Illinois, with a 75-ft deep well. The water is hard, runs black at times, and has a sulphur smell. We use the Sears filtration system that was popular 30 years ago. It consists of stand alone bleach injection pump, dwell tank, sand filter tank, and carbon filter tank. This is followed by a water softener tank for just the hot water, to protect the hot water heaters, dish washer, and washing machine, from hard water scale. I mix a cheap bleach with water in a 50 gallon plastic tank, and this is injected, in small quantities, into the incoming well water prior to the large well tank. The bleach bonds with the sulphur dioxide, as well as kills any “bugs”, before being removed by the filters. The system requires quarterly maintenance and back-washings, as well as getting the right bleach-to-water mix in the tank, but has performed fine for decades. The bleach does affect the plastic pump parts, so they have to be cleaned with vinegar maybe once a year. I replace the pump every few years ($200). All parts are available from Sears Online, Blue White Industries, and eBay. Water tests show everything, including farm field chemicals, are removed by this system. If you want part numbers, let me know. It all does take up space in the basement.

In the home I grew up in our well water was clear but it was high in mineral content because there was a lot of limestone on the property. The water was very hard but my father installed a water softener that improved the taste and how one's skin felt after taking a shower or washing one's hair. If I were you, I'd install a reverse osmosis system like the military uses. In fact, if you go to Iron Planet you might be able to purchase at a decent price a military surplus large capacity RO system, that's designed for remote use, that can be installed between your well and your cistern.

I'm on rainwater and the following filter setup has worked great: pump -> sediment filter -> 10-inch jumbo -> 10 micron prefilter -> 1 micron filter -> UV treatment -> calcite (for rainwater only) pH adjustment -> cistern. The cistern is then fed to the house where it has a boost pump -> carbon filter -> ultrafiltration (0.01 micron) -> UV treatment. The ultrafilter has inlet, waste, and outlet. The waste is used to fill the toilets which flushes the filter every time you flush the toilet. You replace the filter element every 7 to 10 years. I used a 3000 L/h version available from Banggood, Aliexpress, etc. The whole system has performed great over the past 4 years and total cost was round $300 vs. $6,000 from the local filter places plus annual contract.

Whole house water filter we have 3 4" yarn then use berkey for drinking. We have arsenic uranium.

We have people in our are that has the iron issues and even with filters they still have the discoloration in the sinks, toilets, washing machine, dishwashers, refrigerators with ice and such. It gets so bad sometimes they have to change the filters sometimes daily.
