''They can be great people Kal-El, they whish to be.They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I've sent them you, my only son'' Best.lines.uttered.in.movie.history.
The Final Boss Actually, I'm off the same mind as you are, my friend. I'll admit it, I'm not MoS's biggest fans but the movie showed a lot of potential, so I can watch it if there's nothing else on and I was hoping BvS would be better. Unfortunately it was a major let down.
Arturo Casab though its a lie. the yellow sun (which is actually white) would give him streingh, the other planets had no life and oh krypton was about to blow up.
johnny cake Actually in the comics several other inhabitted planets (such as Thanagar and New Genesis, as well as Jupiter in our own Solar system) have a yellow sun and Jor-El was well aware of their existence, however he decided to send his son to earth for the exact same reasons specified in this movie.
"My son. You do not remember me. I am Jor-El. I am your father." Simple lines that Brando renders quietly, but with such great emotional power. He was worth every penny he was paid for this portrayal.
every penny... he had a cool stoic voice but for how much he was paid... global capitalism is not a meritocracy, sir. Its a cryptofascist military industrial genocidal death-cult cannibalistic economic system run by LexCorp
this is so relaxing to listen to. When ever I get anxiety, I listen to this and close my eyes and imagine I am floating throughout the galaxies of the universe. Great meditation.
"this is so relaxing to listen to. When ever I get anxiety, I listen to this and close my eyes and imagine I am floating throughout the galaxies of the universe. Great meditation". 283 Reply I could not agree MORE Seth!!! And, it's GOOD to hear that other people have been doing the same thing I have, listening to the music, imagining floating throughout the galaxies. It can be VERY relaxing. The music is also inspiring to believe a well advanced species is benevolent from whom we humans of Earth, not-so-advanced as they, can benefit from their gifts and mistakes. I look at both the beginning of Superman with the introduction of Krypton in all its majesty alongside the introduction of Asgard in the beginning of the first THOR movie in 2011, with all its splendor, as the potential for human greatness. These two movies reveal peaceful aliens we should emulate, not envying men of violence the blood lust embraced by many today typifies. Sigh, if only the people of planet Earth could be at ease with themselves, with one another as the people of Krypton and Asgard, and just as intelligent, benign.
I love the dichotomy between Clark's two fathers. Jor-El is godlike, brilliant and commanding. Jonathan is "ordinary," blue-collar and humble. Yet both men are truly wise, guiding Clark to greatness in their own way.
I agree completely! I've always loved Jonathan Kent's impact on the Superman story. Like the biblical story of Joseph, Jonathan Kent has the monumental task of raising the powerful man on Earth and yet takes the job in his stride; by raising Clark like his own son and teaching the boy to have values such as decency, virtue, compassion and kindness. Clark's "divine" abilities and his mission on earth come from his biological father, but it's because of Jonathan Kent's guidance that Clark is able to go from being Kal-El "The son of God" to "The Superman".
"Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. But always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son." -Jor-El
This scene is what really took this film on another level for me, so poetic and esoteric in a way you just don't see in most modern Superhero films. Unlike the newer DC movies where they constantly TELL you how "christ-like" Superman is, here they do it in the subtlest of ways and it works so much better
They can be a great people, Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son. Film writers don't write like this today
He may have taken the role for the MASSIVE check, but he still commits to it with the greatest of ease. By the way, give it some time to see _Last Tango in Paris_ before or after seeing this. The dichotomy will crush you.
Stories about him tell a different side. He was a good actor but they say he would not always learn his lines and used cheat sheets to read lines during shoots. Not hating just a bit of rumor.
I would agree with that, except for the one part of the dialogue between the two numbers near the beginning: "...You will have reached your eighteenth year, as it is measured here.", followed by "... I will have been dead for many thousands of 'your' years." What is the next time frame he says? "...Twelve of 'your' years will have passed." So in terms of how old he is, I have reason to believe that when asked about it by Lois, he tells the truth when he says "Over twenty one" as that's closer to the actual age of his.
Always makes me tear up; this is the essence of Superman and is something we should all strive for in our own lives. Be the light that shines for others.
I loved this scene as a child and still do now. Such emotion and wisdom power-packed, and power performed. Marlon Brando *was* Jor-El, an insightful and wise father. Wow. This was unmatched by anything in the new version, reasonably good movie that it was.
“Live as one of them, Kal-El. And discover where your strength and your power are needed.” They are needed in me, a once 6 year old little girl looking for the good in the world, hoping still that it is out there. A now 30 year old woman, believing in your protection still 🙏❤️
JAY OH Brando is KING. But Russel Crowe was chosen because of his voice. I suggested it during discussion with Ridley Scott in San Antonio, Tx. Ridley and I were watching "A Good Year" I suggested Russell portray Jor El and Ridley looked at me strangely and it was suggested and it happened.
humberchristopher29 thats cool that russell crowe was chosen for MOS just saying that part of what the original superman movies good was that brando was in them...his performance was stellar and unmatched it just stands out more then russel crowes even after all this time just sayin
Roronoa Zoro Glad you like it. I trembled while approaching the casting of Jor- El. Yet I suggested to Ridley Scot that Russell has this awesome voice as well as looks. It happened and I am very pleased.
I always turn to this when I am in need, feeling angry or depressed. People can really, really SUCK sometimes, but remember that we are here to be heros on Earth. We are all as wonderful as Superman, and we are here to make the world a better place. Just not for those who hate us.
Despite his mispronounciation of Krypton, I cannot think of any one better to play as the father to a God on Earth than the original Godfather himself.
That key line about humanity is a mantra I turn to whenever I get really angry at people. They can be a great people they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way
We Shall Try To Fine The Answers Together: "How Does A Good Man Live? What Is Virtue? When Does A Mans Obligation To Those Around Him Exceed His Obligation To Himself? Well These Are Not Simply Questions. Even On Krypton, There Is No Precise Science To Provide Us With The Answers. I Can Only Tell What I Myself Believe. And To This End, I Have Tried To Anticipate Your Questions In The Order Of Their Importance To You". So My Son, Speak!
The twelve years of education and training off Earth provide a great environment for storytelling. Limitless save for the imagination of the storyteller. An unexplored realm of the Superman universe.
by the way. anyone else find it funny that both Marlon Brando and Russel Crowe, have played Jor-El, but pre finding fame in the movie industry, Russel Crowe, as musical artist "Russ Le rock" released a single called "I just wanna be like Marlon Brando", so do you think that when he got the role of Jor-El, he was like "the prophecy's true!"?
This is what every son wants to hear from his father. This was things and people were still good. When right was right and evil was evil. I miss it. I miss having hero's and I know if your watching this clip, you miss Christopher Reeves too. You taught me what it means to be a good man.
Some times when I wonder where the human race is going, I find comfort in Jor-el's words: "They can be a great people, Kal-el; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way."
Easily THE GREATEST EVER MOMENT FROM ANY COMIC BOOK MOVIE TO DATE. BY A MILLION MILES. Nothing comes close to this scene. Brando. The Beautiful Epic Score. John Williams. Clark Kent turns into Superman. Christopher Reeves in the role he was born to play. MAGNIFICANT.
I wont lie I was a bit anger that it seem on Man Of Steel he only taught his son about kryton and on here it seemed like he taught him everything he needed to know to make him the most perfect superhero ever.
If this is historical writing idk what is , no other Superman movie ever showed his training with his father with the knowledge he is giving besides this movie , just epic
the key elements here for most super man fans is in many of the things being spoken here by jor-el; the idea of good things and good hope for humanit and not the typical evil seens we see every day; the beauty of Jerry Siegel and his brother was they accidental made a mircle. they made a man who could live life as a good guy; and not be a loser. they made a guy that could inspire people to believe in that good. whenever they make super man do something evil i get sick.
It's amazing what transpires here. Jorel says come with me now my son as we break your earthly confinement traveling through space and time and at the end he say 12 years would have passed when you return. Basically for 12 years kalel was gone traveling through space and time a concept ignored and not properly explained. It would have made more sense in Smallville to use this as the way Jorel was able to influence Clark.
Marlon wherever you are, you absolutely nailed it here. Orson Welles could not have reached those levels of gravitas. and to top it all, you were probably not even trying.
Did you see the scene in Man of Steel where Henry Cavill's Superman looked a little like Christopher Reeve's face when he stood up under the world engine? I almost see it as a sign, a sign that if hollywood made a refined remake of Superman 1978, with new refined elements incorporated, it would become the best Superman film ever made
I absolutely love this clip. I just turned 18, and ive always looked up at the skies, wondering if my "real" parents are out there somewhere, im into aliens and shit so this clip is really awesome!!!
this was definitely the best superman, but let's not forget that all the cator who have portrayed superman haven given the superhero different essences for example tom welling on smallville was clark journeys to become superman, dean cain was mostly about clarks humanity and henry cavill is just a remake needed for all the superheroes of dc that are coming
for some reason Superman background is so very much the same as Jesus Christ, the only son, and Jor El is so much full of wisdom, love, and care, that makes them pure and since the kryptonians look exactly like us, wouldn't it be safe to say that they too have been blessed by God in his image
@QuelDr0ma The reason for that it under the yellow sun, Kryptonite changes as well. The yellow sun makes it radioactive and its radiation interferes with superman's ability to process yellow sunlight. Under a red sun it has no effect on superman.
"we will enter the realm of the red Krypton sun. Source of your strength and nourishment. Cause of our eventual destruction." 2:57 mark. I thought Superman got his strength from the Earths sun and red sun made him weak?
No one believed Jor-El that the planet was in danger, so no one bothered to build any ships. The planet's deterioration happened so quickly Jor-El only had time to build a small ship that could take his son to safety.
" Always hold in your heart, The Pride Of Your Special Heritage [ Because, You Factually Are The Archangel Michael ]! They can be A Great People [ True Children Of Yahweh ], Cal El, they wish to be [ Deep Down Inside Everyone Of Them ]... they only lack The Light [ That I Have Been Attempting To Give Them ] to show the way [ Since, Babylon Has Defiantly Denied It To Them ] - for this reason, above all others... Their Capacity For Good... I have sent them you [ My Own Peace Offering Of Love ]! "
man i miss this scene alot.. brings back memories. Kinda forgot the sun parallels and the 12 stay in the fortress.. wish u had him flying out, that would have kicked ass!!!
they always say brando didn't care, just phoned it in, took the two million and ran. for me, he made this movie. his, "...my only son..." never fails to move me.
" Even though you have been raised as a human being, you are not one of them [ You Are Actually An Angelic Being In Human Form - Or, An Avatar ]. You Have Great Powers [ Far In Excess Of All Other Potential Human Beings ]... only some of which, you have yet discovered! In this next year, we shall examine The Human Heart [ What Actually Motivates Them Towards Good Or Evil ]... it is more fragile, than a rose [ Their Own Spirit Is Very Easily Damaged ]..."
@pspboy7 me either! Actually I'd prefer or rather suggest the director's cut of this movie! In that way we get to see a lot more that was not shown in the original version!
Of course, Kal-El would need a regular job to make income to live on, so he would retain the name he had gained on Earth, Clark Joseph Kent and he applied for and took a job with the Daily Planet, a great metropolitan newspaper in the city of Metropolis.
@TheDavidkalel special relativity! Space & Time according to Einstein elapses more quickly while the subject experiences normality when the subject approaches the speed of light... Krypton was in a habitable zone of sorts like earth, however a star increases in size before it goes nova. There's nothing to suggest that a Kryptonian year was longer or shorter. If anything it was far longer having orbited it's star during it's red giant stage... Pretty logical wouldn't you think?
