「狂死」(kyoshi) is a Japanese term that means "dying insane". I think that's probably the closest reference to the term used. Although, the characters 「恐」(kyo) "fear/dread" and「 子」(shi) "child" could be put together to form 「恐子」(kyoshi) ”terrifying child", which makes the most sense. Not a real word, but it works.

In Japanese, they'd be kyonshi, the guy's accent may have butchered that part. I forget where I'd first heard about them, though Robo Vampire technically uses them too and well...that one's infamously bad. There was a cool short lived manga in Shounen Jump+ that featured them, Jiangshi X

I have no idea how Brandon Tenold heard about this movie. I doubt he saw my suggestion but I have been suggesting this movie to many channels in the comment section many times. It is a great movie for a low budget film. The poorly made cheap parts of the film are used to maximum effect. The tone is refreshing as you can tell the actors are mostly competent. The dead children horror part makes the movie terrifying enough just due to how the content is treated. Also it is good to see a female actor who isn’t skinny. It just feels more real. The poodle monster at the end makes the whole movie feel very rewarding at the end. You can tell a lot of effort went into it.

So, I agree that the pace is a bit slow for this genre, but i actually found this movie really charming when I first saw it- and in no small part because the movie gave its characters a lot of time to just... be people with lives and personalities. It sets up a pretty realistic, grounded set of characters, then slowly ratchets up the weird until Asian child zombies beget a Phyllis Diller monster begets a 9 ft tall poodle-beast. Also, i appreciate when a movie has a plus-size main character without making it the point of the movie. Or treating them like they're wrong for being that way. 🙄

I feel like the best explanation for the ending was that (if I remember correctly) the film was supposed to have a wedding scene at the end that got cut (for good reason; it feels like too much of a tonal swing!). So... maybe it was meant to go along with that? Either way, nice to get this blast from the past! I used to rent this when I was a kid, and usually just waded through the first half until it got rolling. I always felt the monster work made it worth it... though don't know if I'm quite *that* patient these days!

Zombie phylis looks like she'd be perfect for peewee's big adventure and Beetlejuice.

They never explained how the girl who woke up during her autopsy came back to life and how nobody noticed any life signs before they started cutting. Given the timing of her awakening when the ghouls started rising I was expecting some twist like a spell reanimated everything in the morgue and that we'd see more zombies and the girl would turn out to be a zombie that was just very fresh.

10:54 Brandon Tenold knows the classic Horror movie cliches. Never follow the sounds of a laughing nor crying children, that never ends well.

Yup, a poodle werewolf. It has to get points for that alone. Those of us old enough to remember Phyllis Diller will will appreciate the surreality of that also. I forget where and when I stumbled across this one years ago, but never regretted it.

You should do the review on the movie in 1970 called the equinox since the equinox was passed of this fall. You should review that one.
