There actually is a Dynasty Warriors movie on Netflix. It is one of the worst "films" I've ever seen and somehow makes the plot of the games seem like Shakespeare. Definitely worth the watch in the same way that you fixate on looking at a car crash when driving by the scene.

2:39 Hi! So I did my MAs in East Asian Studies with a focus on this specific period (and its portrayals in poetry and novels) and can give a quick primer on what's going on here! So in 1126, the Song Dynasty was invaded by Jurchen people of modern day Manchuria who had formed their own Dynasty called the Jin Dynasty (as to WHY they invaded, it's a really long story involving lots of politics, betrayals, and geopolitical rivalries). In 1127, the Jin captured the Song capital of Kaifeng (then called Bianjing) along with the Emperor Qinzong and his father the retired emperor Huizong. The only member of the Imperial family to escape was Prince Zhao Gou, who fled to Southern China to establish a new capital at Hangzhou (then called Lin'an) and himself as Emperor Gaozong. After another 15 years of war, the Jin and Song reached a stalemate and signed a peace treaty leaving the Jin to rule Northern China and the Song to rule Southern China. To differentiate the Song before and after 1127 we call the pre-1127 Song the Northern Song Dynasty and post-1127 Song the Southern Song Dynasty. There are a lot of cool stories, many of which have been made into movies, from this period and the most popular hero from it is easily the tattooed patriot General Yue Fei, who nearly liberated all the lands conquered by the Jin before being betrayed and forced to kill himself by schemes at home.

Then you have movies like "Master of the flying guillotine", with an entire third of it consisting of a deadly fighting Tournament. Still good, just a little weird they did that.

Hey, Ti Lung is in this movie. He's probably most famous for playing Jackie Chan's dad in Druken Master 2 (despite probably only being about 5 years older than Jackie) but I'll always remember him from the Better Tomorrow movies alongside Chow Yun Fat.

You were right. The deadly duo was Ti Lung and David Chiang Da Wei. They were huge stars that Chang Che made quite a few movies with. You will recognize Ti Lung from his later movies I'm sure, like Drunken Master 2 and A Better Tomorrow.

"I'm pretty sure they didn't have nailgun crossbows in ancient China." Well actually... they did. They didn't look like that, but they did have them. And they were semi-automatic!

That bridge scene is dangerously close to being Monty Python and the Holy Grail levels of silliness.

As it happens, one of my most recent acquisitions is a Shaw Bros. movie also starring David Chiang: "THE LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES" (1974) Warner Bros. put up the money to finance the Hammer Films end of this co-production, there was non-stop chaos due to language and cultural problems between the 2 films crews, but on the other hand, Peter Cushing worked directly with David Chiang, who said decades later that he feels he became a much-better actor due to Cushing's help. INSANELY, Warners decided at the last minute NOT to release the film in the USA at all, and 5 years later, Max Rosenberg acquired it, BUTCHERED it horribly, and released it under the name "THE 7 BROTHERS MEET DRACULA". Both versions are now available on Blu-Ray. The original is stunning, the butcher-job a horrible curiosity. Cheh Chang served as an (UNCREDITED!) consultant on the film.
