I’ve spoken to Coach Slay about this match, and he himself considers Buvaisar Saitiev to be one of the best wrestler’s of all time. All love and respect
LOL...I mean, you didn't need to personally talk to Slay's coach to get that bit of info. It's pretty well known Saitiev is one of the 2-3 all time greats(Sadulaev may have passed him and Medved up now).
@Vast Emptiness Is he? Is there some subjective chart I don't know about? Saludaev bumped up and lost once to Snyder. But he won titles both Olympic and World before that. SNYDER would probably be considered one of the top 10 ever if not for him. That's who Saludaev has lost to. Saitiev lost to a guy who went 0-2 at the D1s. I think there's a pretty strong case he's already passed him and Medved up. The Slay lose is like Michigan losing to Appalachian State. The Snyder loss is like Bama losing to Clemson.
@@scourge8097 saitiev still has 3 golds to Sadulaev’s 2, not to mention more world titles. You also have to remember the fact that 74kg is a much more stacked weight class than 97kg, so it makes what Saitiev accomplished that much more impressive. Not knocking Sadulaev at all though, I like the guy
It's unfortunate this thread has to turn into a flame war. Brandon Slay wrestled well this match, and as an American, I cheer him on. But I respect Saitiev for the legendary wrestler he is. It is foolish to predict which country will have the best wrestlers...as the above video shows, even a great "untouchable" wrestler can lose to someone like Slay, a wrestler from Texas of all places, who set his mind on winning. Lets focus instead on keeping the sport alive, no matter where we are from.
I am chechen and I completely agree. Sports should be unpolitical and most importantly respectful. True martial artists know you can't and probably shouldn't always win.
@@shiishani3302 What is the style of wrestling that takes place during the Russian Nationals? They fight in a very explosive and dramatic style. I prefer it over the style we see the most here in America. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YHiOd50JSyA.html
@@DANVIIL I am sorry, I don't know. Most "russian" top wrestlers are from northern Caucasus (Mountains) & they have a certain style. Maby this helps you find the information.
Slay did what he had to do, find a way to score in overtime. Saitiev is probably the GOAT but it doesn't mean he can't be beaten on any particular day. A great moment for Brandon!
This is the biggest upset in Wrestling to me. Slay TOOK Saitiev down. Rulon...impressive(though I just can't put Greco accomplishments on the same level as Freestyle). But Saitiev...is the GOAT...or at least was. Sadulaev may have passed him up. I think Snyder getting another win over him may top Slay, but it wouldn't be viewed like that because he's already beaten him. But that guy is the most incredible wrestler ever. He had the greatest scramble I've ever seen in my LIFE vs a Belarus Wrestler. Wish I could find it, but Sadulaev is giving up a TD. Guy has his leg in the air, he's got him dead to rights, middle of the mat and he scrambles and I can't even describe it, but he's like a cat. Or a lightweight in a 211 pound body. The man is a freak. But anyway, Slay knocked off one of the true greats...though words is, the Russians are still challenging this match!
@@scourge8097 i think when you see accomplishments side by side, Sadulaev hasn’t quite passed up Saitiev. As long as he keeps motoring through the competition at the same pace, he definitely will
@@ajchaney Yeah, but it's never that simple as simply comparing their number of Titles? There's some nuance. Brandon Slay...did an INCREDIBLE job, but....he was went 0-2 at the NCAAs. Kyle Snyder was in the way to being one of the all time Greats. Saludaev bumped up ~20 pounds and after one loss has not just dominated him, but the world. Also...as great as Saitiev was,, Saludaev was a better just pure Wrestler. Go watch the shot he defended vs the guy from Belarus. Honestly, the best shot defense I've seen at any level...ever. The scramble, the chain, the offense... I hope Cap can knock him off and make this a better discussion, but I think it's inevitable. I think he's already there....which sucks because I recruited Kyle when he was a Freshman...we offered after, obviously he couldn't sign, but you knew he was different IMMEDIATELY. Not that you knew he'd be THIS good, but him, the kid Phillips from Ohio, Snyder, two best Freshmen I've ever seen over 152. Chris Phillips just decided he was done...Kyle just a kept getting better and better. So...that may weigh on my opinions.
Can y'all imagine how good satiev would have been at folkstyle with his scrambling and top ability? I'm sad we don't get to see it. Satiev is one of the most interesting watches imo.
he is coaching and being successful in whatever he chooses to do. his victory over saitiev was perhaps his finest athletic achievement. he shocked the world but mostly shocked saitiev.
Buvaysar is one of the All Time greats, for sure. I have watched him make very good wrestlers look like something he toys with, and he did. Do not disrespect Brandon Slay. It took a perfect match and opponent to defeat the great Satiev one time.
@@cheesecake4292 I don't even know what this means. So you wrestled sick and...because YOU didn't feel it, that means you'd know how OTHERS do...or don't feel it? I'd assume MOST of us in here are Wrestlers. Who the hell else is watching Brandon Slay vs Satiev 25 years(or 20 years) later? Seriously? That's just kinda nonsense.
Classic American vs Russian build for Olympic wrestling Slays arms are way bigger the Russian is lanky and longer but u can tell his grip strength is insane. When i was on the jr Olympic team we wrestled Russia they came and stayed with us and the kid at my weight who edged me in the match was built just like this just the teenager version but he had some beat strength to him!
Slay actually got the silver. He was awarded the gold when the gold medalist popped for steroids, i think it was tyhe german. Nobody cares though because Slay beat the greatest freestyle wrestler EVER in these games, he deserves the gold. And Slay is doing great, hes one of the head coaches for the USA national team to answer the other guy.
Yes...it was. This one ACTUALLY required a TD. 0-2 Barbecue at the NCAA's and Slay end's up beating the best Wrestler ever. Amazing. There's also the myth behind Karelin that's a little silly(nobody had beaten him in 10 years or scored a point on him...both untrue...he'd lost the World Championships until one of those famous Russian challenges in '97 or '98 and had also given up points). But beyond that, Saitiev is the Greatest in what is in my opinion the superior style of Wrestling. If Snyder knocks of Sadulaev...after he's now settled into and dominated 97KG, that would be an upset on that level IMO.
guys, does anybody know how do i need to practice to become better wrestler... what exercises can help to improve... physically... thank you for the answers, sincerely!
No, I mean the defense was very nice. I wish I watched these matches when I was still wrestling could learn much more than a coach just telling you to do Iowa style wrestling. The Russian was a beast and also a smart wrestler. Instead of trying to escape with the wizard and get free. He stepped over beautifully. Never seen that one lol
@@raiklaub975 If your world is devided into black and white it is in the same way devided into the sport and the ideology. Meanwhile, it is only the game of our mind.
@@andreykhadyka377 that's true and that's a shame. No matter what's going on in the world, no matter how people are turned against each other, if people get a chance to talk to each other face to face, human to human (no TV, no politician in between) then everything goes back to normal and mostly peaceful very quickly. Everyone has a hard time and no one is only bad and no one is only good.
Both of these guys wrestled their goddamn hearts out. I had forgotten what the outcome of this match was, and so was on the edge of my seat. I think Satiev would win the best three out of five, but on this particular day, Brandon Slay just came in ready to fight for it. Satiev actually seemed a little off his game. To me, the intensity of slays defensive wrestling is what won the match.
@lascision Saitiev is quite tall though so adding some muscles could hurt him in making weight. Although in 2008 Olympics he added more strength training - lifting weights etc. As he said more American type of training. But he wasn't young anymore so he might have really needed it.
U guys are ridiculous! Stop arguing which country is better. Saytiev is a high class wrestler. He lost to Slay that day. Good job by Slay. If you are a wrestler, then u must know that everyone loses once in a while. So give both wrestlers respect for good wrestling match. I wanna see more competition from American team of freestyle in international arena. Unfortunately, they are not doing that well yet.
@@metzthagoat9219 damn, my comment was 10 years ago. The US team is doing really good now. Let's see what life has in store for us in 2021 World Championship in Oslo soon. Im interested to see Russia vs USA finals.
@@region015 lol i love responding to old comments, and im always shocked as to who still remembers their password. i hope usa does well, yianni specifically
The first minute is all you need to see on who is the better wrestler, Slay took him down with ease while both guys had zero fatigue. Also, there is no way these guys were the same weight. Slay looks like he weighs 10-20 pounds more.
Saitiev wrestled in 6 world championships and 4 Olympics. This is the only time he lost. Slay never even won a college title. But he upset the champion and went on to win gold
Maybe its just a matter of opinion, but Gable had ZERO losses. He had one loss in college and ZERO losses in any international competition. So he was a completely undefeated wrestler.
Listen to wrestling changed my life podcast. Audio documentary on slay and journey how he defeated saitiev. Best story ever. Will be looking forward watching ur journey to Olympic gold. Keep it up young man.
Saitiev is an amazing wrestler with an pedigree career but Slay also had superlative gifts. He didn't have a long international career but he was outstanding that year.
@SiestaBay239 First of all, Saitiev is from Russia, from Chechen lands. The soviet wrestling school was one of the best (or the best) and nowadays different national schools are keeping to have a high level. Imagine that kids from Saitiev's wrestling school will always have a high level training in a couple of years thanks to exceptional teachers. So you can wait as long as you can to see "even" wrestlers.
As an obvious example, just take 100m running in which USA had a lead in 90s or beginning of 2000s, but a running school in Kingston (opened by old Jamaican athletes) just blew it up with its athletes. And today, nothing shows that Buvaysar or other exceptional Soviet/russian champ will go to US and offer a competitive advantage.
what a terrible camera work. In the middle of the fight, any unimportant spectators are shown. The match lasts a few minutes, can't you set the match as a priority and meanwhile not show viewers who are of no interest to anyone? After the fight, before the fight or in the short breaks, you could show spectators if you really want to. Even the decisive final scene cannot be seen because of this. How absurd
@Aspartan3 may be or may be not. what im saying is you cannot call the best someone, who only has one accomplishment. I don't know why he quit, but he knows that this win was a fluke. Saitiev was way too relaxed because he did know who Brandon Slay was.
i met brandon slay at the olympic training center and i can say he won because of his pure size over the russian. yes he is a skilled wrestler but he honestly looked like he weighed about 220 when i met him. his ability to cut is unreal
I think this is a case of the Russians not scouting Slay at all. They were not prepared for the explosive attacks. But as they say, you snooze you lose.
@infestation69 I'm not saying you gotta change everything about freestyle, but in the current system (not the one used back in 2000) if you are ahead 2-1 in the first period, there is no reason to do anything more in the period. If the score carried over, you'd have motivation to continue to be offensively aggressive. The current scoring system favors a lot of low scoring matches. Whoever scores first in the period then gets very defensive just short of stalling.
@socalstunner3 I agree Saitiev is better than Slay. But on this day, during this match, Slay was better. Also, you're point about a "technicality" is a bit flawed. While Slay was awarded the gold after losing, he was awarded it because his opponent tested positive for steroids. This is not a "technicality," it is a rule-- and a very clear-cut rule at that. Slay was also tested for steroids and tested clean.
So Brandon knew that Satiev wasn't going to able to defend his powerful double and the gut wrench. Slays two best moves was the double leg and the gut wrench. That's how he won the match. Two blast doubles and a gut wrench.
Slay did not really impress me much here, but he won. Saiteiv looked like on a different day the match would have ended differently. That's why we wrestle. Always be on your game.
Don't underestimate how good the explosive double legs at the start and in OT were. Satiev makes so many good wrestlers look silly but Slay had excellent defense in this match. This was pretty much to only way to beat Satiev, surprise him at the start and wrestle error-free.
Saitiev is a great wreslter, but he lost this match. A real champion accepts his defeats and learns from, and Saitiev did learn from this. All these russians on here making excuses for Saitiev or putting down Slay are classless and have no clue how to be a real champion or what a real champion is. Slay wrestled well above what was expected, and I'm sure it was because of hard work and dedication. Slay also won more matches at the olympics against other countries top guys.
