Jason Green I play guitar and I play a lot of their songs, and how Brent plays certain lead parts and sings baffles me, these guys are ridiculously talented. And even more criminally underrated
2:13 Anybody know how Brann did that cymbal choke with this fill on the actual record? I don’t see how it would be possible to do that without a 3rd arm or overdubbing. He doesn’t choke the cymbal when he’s playing the fill live right here, so I’d assume they just overdubbed a choke for the record?
just curious, is Brann a left handed, right footed drummer playing a right handed kit? I use different hands depending on the situation; throw a football with my left hand but a baseball with my right, play basketball dominant righty but bowl lefty only. The way he plays makes a lot of sense to me in terms of fills and wanting to keep time with both hands (hence ghost note snare constantly) which leads me to believe he is probably ambidextrous
alex shefflette He doesnt have to be necesarily ambidextrous. The way he play doesnt mean he could write or throw a ball the same way with both hands. Its like you said, your dominant hand could vary depending the task, but it will surely be different with each hand and each task. Its all about how you develop that skill from the begining, this guy created and worked this style from the go, and here there are the results.
alex shefflette Oh, and bout the question, given hes hella fast with both hands, maybe it would have been the same for him to play on a left or right handed kit from the start, so he must be right handed. Also, almost every leftie in a right handed kit use to play open handed hi-hat.
alex shefflette I'm naturally left handed but was forced to use right hand in preschool, but I play guitar left handed. with drums I play a right handed set up but I still lead with my left for fills.
Im left handed and play on a right handed type of kit (forced to learn to become right footed because I was hit by a car when I was a teenager), and I play openhanded on the kit. My ride is on the opposite side that Brann's is, just above my hi-hats. But weirdly enough my drum fills all lead with my right hand, and have since I was a kid and played on a left handed kit, so every drummer has their quirks. I am pretty sure Brann is right handed and right footed and a little ADHD, which would explain all the ghost notes and insanely amazing fills all throughout every single song. He's a one of a kind drummer for sure.
