Today we gathered up a bunch of our old bullet casings along with a few brass scrap pieces and melted them down into some bars! These are some of the coolest looking bars we have made yet! Enjoy! #casting #forging #forge #melting #meltingmetal #metal #gold #brass

I'm not normally "that safety guy", but... crucibles are not meant to be lifted or poured using pliers. The crucible material is at it's weakest when red hot. It's is only a matter of time before you have a crucible full of molten copper/brass break and dump the lot on you and the floor. Which leads me to my next issue... concrete floors (painted or not) have moisture in them even if you think they are dry. When the molten metal hits the concrete, the moisture underneath the surface will boil instantly and cause spalling. It fractures the concrete and 'pops' where you will get showered in red hot metal and concrete shrapnel. Do some proper research into foundry/furnace work before you (and the guy next to you) gets seriously injured.

I would honestly suggest some crucible tongs, they are pretty cheap are really worth it, especially if you will do this more often (I hope so cause I love these videos) but a set of tongs and lifting handle are $80 - $140 online, worth the investment

brass in the garage, brave! I always overheat it and generate the dreaded zinc boil off with the white smoke and yellow stringers! I hate ammo casings though, so much empty space and busy filling the crucible.

Have you tried smashing them so they're flatter? The rim is solid but the casing itself is hollow so you should be able to save some space

@@justjoe5373 time consuming, but yes it is an option.

@@ChatterontheWire Also cases being hollow makes them pretty quick to melt just like cans for aluminum. Honestly I imagine it's a bigger hassle to preheat them than to melt them. But I don't know, where I live it's illegal to own any part of a round of ammo unless you have a gun chambered in that caliber so I don't have any experience with cases. I've only worked with fittings, nuts, random junk and other such stuff
