Catherine Newman’s We All Want Impossible Things is the story of Edith and Ashley. They have been best friends for over forty-two years, shared the mundane and the momentous together: trick or treating and binge drinking; Gilligan’s Island reruns and REM concerts; hickeys and heartbreak; surprise Scottish wakes; marriages, infertility, and children. But now Edi is dying of ovarian cancer and spending her last days at a hospice near Ash. Laura Zigman’s Small World introduces Joyce and Lydia, two offbeat and newly divorced sisters who move in together as adults-and finally reckon with their childhood and the death of their disabled sister when she was ten. When they move in together, Joyce is living in an apartment in Cambridge, archiving family photos for other families and Lydia has decided to relocate from LA after a thirty year absence. Both books are heart-rending but also laugh-out-loud funny.
Catherine Newman is the author of a new novel, We All Want Impossible Things, two kids’ how-to books, two memoirs and a middle-grade novel. She lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with her family.
Laura Zigman is the author of six novels, including Animal Husbandry (made into the movie “Someone Like You,” starring Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd) and her new book, Small World. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
