In this video I compare a Braun Series 5 (5090cc) with a Braun Series 7 (740S-6). Braun makes some of the best shavers on the market. The foils last about 18 months as well so it isn't expensive to own.
These shavers both provide an excellent shave and the difference is quite minimal in my opinion. The Series 7 has a display at the bottom and has an adjustable speed but otherwise they both work great.

Isnt the series 7 bound to have an update by now? Looks like that model hasnt been updated in years while the series 5 seems to be a lot newer.

mick0maticNL I may have an older model 7 Series. Other than the multiple speed option and the size being a bit smaller on the 7, I would say I probably like the 5 better and the price is better. The thing about the 7 is the cartridge is smaller so as you shave, stubble falls out. There isn't as much space in there to hold it.

@@SeanDIY Thanks for the reply, i think i will order the series 5! I dont think you have an older model 7, as far as im aware, its exactly the same model 7 they still sell today. I just think they havent updated the design in a long while.

mick0maticNL Likely the case. Prices being equal I'd go 7, but at any savings I'd say the 5 is a better buy. I can't honestly say I can point to anything better on the 7 other than the display lights on the bottom, if that's important to anyone or the adjustable speed. I think the 5 is the way to go as well.

i just bought a Braun 5160S a couple of weeks ago to replace my old series 3. your review, though almost two years have passed, has help me make that purchase decision. FYI, i've been a Braun fan since 40 years, never found a real need to go up to series 7 or 9.

I bought the Series 5 two years ago and my only complaint is the head is too wide compared with the previous 4 Braun shavers I have owned. I have a large mustache and side burns on a narrow face. I liked the smaller cutter head on older models for more precise shaving around these areas. I want Braun to make a model that addresses these concerns. Otherwise, I like these shavers and only wish the price was lower.

That is an interesting point. Im guessing 2 foil shavers are better for you than 3, 4 or 5 blade systems then, right?

An important point you missed in your review: interchangibility of the shaver heads. It's important when stores ran out of a particular series head. I'd need to know for instance which head is interchangeable with 70S.

Great question. I can tell you the 5 series and 7 series I have are 2 different sizes. The 7 is smaller surprisingly.

@@SeanDIY I wasn't happy with the performance. I've just bought the 5 Series and it is much better, imo. After two shaves it seems to me that the performance is smoother and more effective.

Great information. That is what I've heard as well. The Braun 5 series is a big step up from the 3, but I can say the 7 isn't really a step up from the 5.

@@SeanDIY I'd go with the Series 7 definitely. Probably the best out there from Braun. I had the old corded Series 1. Wasn't much impressed. Shaving performance was barely you know lol. I'm sure the 7's really rock. Will find out soon :)

I have the series 5. So regardless of how good my pre-shave routine is I find it virtually all of my electric razors create some kind of trauma to the face. At this point I’ve just given up and I’m going back to wet shaving. It was still interesting giving a good number of electric shavers a thorough evaluation though. Thanks

Some people have sensitive skin and it doesn't work. I just dry shave with the foil shaver with no issue.

i think you will find Braun recommends NOT to wash your face before using their electric razor. a wet face makes skin damage more likley. Its worth a try. also dont press down too hard and foil shavers work best on short hair not 3 day growth. i hope these tips are helpful

@@timpoiu My understanding is it's wet or dry. I personally shave dry, but you can use shaving cream and it says that's fine.

@@SeanDIY yes your right but shaving cream or gel is not the same as washing. from Braun us website "Using foam or gel is proven to significantly soften the skin and consenquently to make it less prone to irritations while shaving. However if you prefer dry shaving without foam, we recommend not to wash your face before you shave as the skin tends to be slightly swollen after washing. The series 5 wasn’t good enough for me on the days when I needed to look professional. It just wasn’t close enough to replace my mach3. The series 7 is ALMOST as close as the Mach 3. It will get as close as the Mach 3 if your house is cold and you have goosebumps on your face while shaving.

Yes I do, I actually had someone selling me the 5 series for $50, but he changed the price on me. But I found good deals on ebay.

@@rundatbread I'd sell you mine for $50. Because I got the 7 charging station and sold my 5 cleaning station (Kids lost the 5 on me for a few months) I have mine sitting around.

How to replace the battery in Braun Series 5 5090 shaver. When I put it in CC station it makes beep noise and the charging lights are running up and down- please advice

I would try to put the cord right into the device. If that doesn't work I'd only try to replace the battery if I was an electric tech. By doing so you would lose the waterproofing.

It looks like a spring under the foil part of the shavinghead of your 7 series is stuck or broken. What do you think?

Joost van Tongeren I will have to take a look. Do you mean part of the head or in the body below the head? I can tell you the shaver works just fine. I did notice on occasion the foil gets depressed and doesn't bounce back up. Interesting. What are you seeing?

That was what i saw: the foil not being pushed upwarts, thus being askew. At 4:33 it is visible. @@SeanDIY

when I want to see a comparison, I want to see the differences between the two rather than knowing what is same among the two

In my opinion there is no real compelling reason to spend extra on the 7. The only difference is the LEDs on the bottom and the 3 speeds, all of which were hardly noticeable in my opinion. There wasn't anything to really differentiate the two in my mind. I expected the 7 to be much better, but it wasn't.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear :P. lol because only difference I noticed in your comparison was that setting up option of different programs for shaver on S-7.. which is pathetic feature. who needs that non-sense in my opinion. I need the shaver to run at one speed, and shave the hair off. simple. I really appreciate your reply. thank you once again!

Glad to help. They call it ultrasonic speed or something, but it's just silliness.
