According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason. William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded. The audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution. First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London. First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground. Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets. After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him. Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire. The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded. Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

@@hoddedman_ARG its a dramatisation that plays loose with history, with some of the inspiration coming from Blind Harry's poem from the 15th century. to claim there is nothing historical about it is just silly. However, there is plenty of things in the movie that DID happen. Most importantly, Longshanks being an absolute w*ker

@@hoddedman_ARG Hollywood seldom does well with history, and the few cases where they do, they tend to end up with a poor movie. A few of the movies that have been accurate and remained good films would be Glory and Hacksaw Ridge directed by Mel Gibson(where most of the inaccuracy comes from omitting some of Doss' heroic acts because they were afraid 'they won't believe it'). For Hollywood Historical Braveheart is about in the middle, certainly they have produced far less historically accurate films.

In a Director's commentary Mel Gibson pointed out he wanted to add more lighting to Robert The Bruce's face and redo the scene but he pointed out the inner conflict on his face from being half in darkness and halfway in the light. It subtlety enhances the entire scene so Mel G. left it alone because of these facts.

Same. It shows his evolution. He took a few steps forward, followed by a few steps back, but then forward again. It’s a more realistic look for someone who is seeking virtue but stumbles and falls along the way, but still presses forward.

@@shinHis3 There is a mini documentary about Mel made by a french/german TV station which is really worth the watch. It is called "Mel Gibson: Vergöttert und verteufelt". It is very interesting, maybe give it a go. Mel is a controversial person but I like him a lot.

Agreed, the look of exasperation and futility on Wallace's face after he unmasks Robert the Bruce.. says everything with no words.

betrayal is one of the worst thing that can happen to you. Perfect acting from both of them

From a guys version of a RomCom I say the ending is perfect. He left a child in the home of his enemy (in that context a huge win for him), got a princess, fought for his country, and fell to betrayal rather than his own ego. In the end he kept his honor and integrity even under the most extreme circumstances. For men this was 10/10.

And utter nonsense historically. Almost nothing in the movie actually happened.

​​@@Shoomer1988 Stirling Bridge was actually fought around a bridge and the bridge collapsed in the middle of the battle because the English horses were on it because the Scots wouldn't let them set up to fight as per rules of chivalry. and the long stakes were were used in the Battle of Falkirk. but like 300 it's not accurate but damn it, it's a good story

Back then when the movie was released on home video, it was released on 2 cassettes VHS because it was too long for 1 cassette. When my idiot friends, who were stoned when they watched it, watched it backwards, they didn't realize that they started with part 2! Way to ruin an amazing movie. 😂

It is not even close to being historically accurate, but Braveheart is a truly great film nonetheless! As usual, Mel Gibson is fantastic. The story is totally captivating. And the reclamation of Robert the Bruce at the end is heartwarming. Robert the Bruce was a true Scottish patriot!

There are some historical inaccuracies , but the end execution scene was pretty much what was done in England , hang to near dead , cut genitals off , disbowel and then cut the head off ... but all is fine now , when England has a King and he is Scottish .

Or their a british historian who knows how inaccurate this is.

As an englishman I of course laughed. Brave heart is a comedy though is t it.

And it was her son who had her lover, conspirator Roger Mortimer, hanged at Tyburn, despite her pleading, and confined her for quite some time on those estates he or his wife had not taken back.

Hacksaw Ridge was bloody good as well. I flip back on forth on which of the two is my favourite movie directed by Gibson.

I was in high school when this came out and I had to do a report on a historical figure for my history class and i chose William Wallace because of this movie. I have also seen this movie at least 60 times probably closer to 100. It is nice to see newer generations discovering classics like this.

"what George Lucas did for special effects" Lucas did nothing for SFX. ILM did all of that, pls stop trying to give directors credit for the countless hours of work from the vastly more talented people he loves taking credit from - including the writers and directors of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, anyone would think Lucas did all of that the way they are advertised. If anything Lucas just took the guy (Douglas Trumbuil) that worked on 2001 and told him "make me a s**t load of that!"

That violence stands the test of time because it's just edits and blood packets. CGI ruined historical epics.

@@mnomadvfx Lucas founded the company in 1975. He created the environment for talented people to experiment and flourish. The company Lucas founded elevated special effects to a true art form. Oh, and it wasn't Trumbull that did A New Hope. He recommended John Dykstra because he was working on Close Encounters. Get your facts straight before writing some angry screed.

@@mnomadvfx He made the company so his vision on what Star Wars should look like could be realized. Without him I doubt the company would've survived since they are connected a lot to Star Wars' financial success, which at least in large part was to Lucas's credit. I get if you're annoyed at people who just want to take credit, but I doubt Lucas is that guy. From what I've seen he's pretty down to earth and the people who praise him are actually other people.

I read that they originally filmed that scene to be much more graphic, but it didn't do well with test audiences so they toned it down.

Actually, Wallace was executed in 1305 while the Battle of Bannockburn, which Robert the Bruce led Scotland to victory over England occurred in 1314, nine years later.

It's not a romantic version, it's based on a Scottish poem written during a time when Scottish nationalism and Anglophobia was rampant, so it favours the Scots and demonizes the English. The reality is there were horrible things done from both sides, that's war

"again in those days everyone was oppressing everyone" Looool - the Welsh weren't oppressing anyone, they were dead or crushed entirely flat by the campaigns of Longshanks previous to his interest in adding Scotland to his empire. Compared to the fate of the Welsh the Scots were practically running through meadows of flowers in paradise. By contrast Scotland suffered a short term if very bloody time in its history almost entirely down to internal squabbling of its own lords over the succession - with unity Edward I would have had nothing to exploit in the first place. The era of significant English lordship over Scotland didn't even last half a century while this film often gives an impression it is bucking the tail end of an endless dominion..... sooooo, Wales then? As the entire film is basically a gloriously inaccurate fanfic of Scottish history I don't see why he couldn't have just made a fantasy tale about the Welsh actually winning instead.

Almost everything you said was the same for me brother, I think I went with my school to see it. Shameful that it was shot in Ireland (good job Scottish Screen) and at no point in the score are there bag pipes 😂

As a Texan who had our own War of Independence, then joined another country, whose ancestors were refugees from the land clearances in Scotland, I feel you on that one brother.

As a swede I feel I have to take the English side here and condemn all of you cheeky rebels lol! Nah, I'm pretty sure it turned out for the best in these cases. Sweden and Norway have had peaceful relations for over 200 years now and I feel confident in saying there will never be war between us again and I hope and believe it's the same for Scotland and England!

A film that purports to be an historical account, but spurns the truth as much as this one does, is NOT worthy of an Oscar, by any stretch of the imagination. I don't think there is one historical fact here, and far too much fiction and pure invention.
