The strangest thing to me was that was the first 8-3-5 triple play since 1884. That seems pretty straight forward so I would think that some team somewhere would have run into one of those since then.

@@abecx Only three defensive players handle the ball. The 8-3 double play is not at all uncommon. Adding a runner trying to advance to third on an 8-3 is not a stretch at all. This would appear to be a play that is much more common than say, a 1-3-6-2-5-6 triple play (which I've seen).

How often do you see an outfielder throw behind the lead runner even without recording an out, let alone two? But three? Only after said lead runner takes a brain cramp too. Plus, great defenders all-round. Olsen was quick, and Riley short hopped the throw plus the tag. Not to mention Harris throwing off the wrong foot but with enough to start the play. Impressive play all around.
@bkleimann
@bkleimann 10 месяцев назад
As a Braves fan, there are a couple of things that I feel played in their favor, and that the BoSox, maybe not bad reads, but not good. By playing left center, it did mean thatbit took Harris longer to get there, but maybe put him at a better angle to throw to 1st using his momentum. I feel like if the ball had been just a little deeper, and he wasnt angled the way he was, Duvall may have made it back. Olson is good, but there are some what ifs in terms of the runner going from 2nd to 3rd. First off, Olson could have just been focused on receiving the catch and not spotted him going to 3rd, yes he was in Olson's line if site, but rolling the dice on what he was able to focus on. Second,the runner going from 2nd to 3rd could have been enough to distract Olson from either making the catch or cause him to bobble on the transfer, meaning runners could be at 1st and 3rd with one out, or if the catch was missed and not backed up properly, a run could of even scored. Ultimately the Braves did so much right and didn't let up on the play, but it could have been very different if you had different players involved.

@stephenj9470
@stephenj9470 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, but these are both first-year Red Sox. Duvall was the one tagged out at 1st, and Yoshida at 3rd. Yoshida has played 44 home games this year, but was in the Japanese League before, so didn't even come to Fenway as a visitor. Duvall is only in his 21st home game at Fenway (had an injury earlier in the season). So they're not as accustomed to the park as, say, Devers or Verdugo would be.
@seantimmons5900
@seantimmons5900 10 месяцев назад
@stephenj9470 44 home games is more than anyone but an AL East player would have. And you aren't including practice time. Either way, in what stadium is that not a ln easy fly ball for a center fielder? This isn't left or even right field. This is a very basic ball. As for the plan to take third, that may work in little league so unless you think Japan is little league, that was also terrible. There is zero excuse. And that's why I love watching.
@stephenj9470
@stephenj9470 10 месяцев назад
@@seantimmons5900 I understand and agree with you for the most part. I just think we overestimate sometimes players' abilities to understand the intricacies of their ballpark. That said, you're right that this should have been relatively simple. I think Yoshida just got too bold. On a side note about the Japanese league. I looked up some of the differences out of curiosity, and they just make Yoshida's decision worse. Apparently some fields are smaller in Japan, and outfielders tend to have better arms.

It comes down to bad head ups baseball by the Red Sox. The ball was hit shallow, but it wasn’t shallow enough to be trouble in my opinion. The Outfielder was clearly going to track it down. They were too eager to get another run in and it ended up beating them. This is how it should have played out when you consider who is base running. Yoshida was the baserunner at 2nd and he is fairly fast. He should have stayed and waited to tag up, as it’s unlikely Harris would have been able to throw him out at 3rd. Duvall was the baserunner at 1st and he is not fast at all, but he is essentially forced to leave 1st in case the ball does drop. He just needed to be more cognizant of the play and give himself enough room to get back. He should have known by the first few steps he took that it was going to be caught and headed back. That way you at least advanced the Lead Runner and split the Diamond with 1 out.

Please explain to me why MLB players don't simply watch the 3rd base coach who is looking directly at the field of play, as appose to the base runners, who have to turn their heads in order to see the play? We used to teach little leaguers to simply watch the third base coach. Why don't grownups to do this?
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 10 месяцев назад
Third base coach is only really used for runners rounding third and balls down right field line and a runner coming to 3B. Most cases the runner knows their speed best since they have run the bases thousands of times. Also, with multiple runners it’s tough for 3B coach to communicate to everyone. Easier to just make the read for yourself.

@robbarbieri8676
@robbarbieri8676 10 месяцев назад
@fifiwoof1969...it was the concept for almost the entire history of baseball, but it does seem bro be going away. The reasoning being if you're already safely at second base, you are in scoring position for most base hits that are fielded by an outfielder, so why take the bat out of your teammate's hands by getting thrown out at third. Oddly enough, a lot of third base coaches take the bat out of the next batter's hands by waving runners home with two outs, only to see them gunned down at the plate for the third out. It happened more often before the universal DH, if the next hitter was the starting pitcher.
@fifiwoof1969
@fifiwoof1969 10 месяцев назад
@@robbarbieri8676 the way I heard the video it sounded like it was a fielding decision (hence my comment) but I follow your reasoning and for a batting side it sounds logical. @@robbarbieri8676 as for universal DH and pitchers not batting I have one name for you - Shohei Ottani (probably spelt wrong). My great problem with American sport - NFL is a CLEAR example is specialized players. Pitchers not batting is MLB's example (could TEACH [ANOTHER wild concept, although it worked in the NL until the pandemic] pitchers to bat - SHOHEI!) but let's look at gridiron. Each team has offense, defense and special teams. That's THREE separate teams that just go on and off as possession changes. Imagine that in any other sport, like soccer, rugby league, rugby union, tennis, cricket, basketball, ice hockey, etc. Can't believe the money NFL players make for the little they do, but hey, I'd take the money too.
@robbarbieri8676
@robbarbieri8676 10 месяцев назад
@@fifiwoof1969 Yes, the announcer was referring to the team batting should never run into the third out by trying for the extra base. That doesn't apply to a force play at third. But if a player tries to go from first to third on a single to LF and gets thrown out, or tries to stretch a double into a triple and gets thrown out, both to end the at bat, that's where the adage comes from. Defensively, yes, you would take the third out where ever you can get it. I mentioned third base coaches sending runners home foolishly. Today, there was a perfect example as the Yankee 3B coach sent Giancarlo Stanton home ( who doesn't run well at all) on a single to CF and he was out by at least 30 feet. As for Ohtani, he's a special case. They even changed the rules for him, so he can remain in the game as DH even if he gets pulled out of a game where he wasn't pitching well, or reached his pitch limit. He's actually lucky they implemented the universal DH, because as far as I know, he's never shown he can field any position other than pitcher. If the NL didn't have the DH now, their teams might have some reluctance to go after him as a FA, considering the contract he's going to get. Also, the pandemic isn't necessarily the reason the universal DH came about, though I think it sped it up by a year or so. The Players Association has wanted it for years, so it was going to come at some point. Now, as to the specialization in American football ( not just the NFL), that's never going away. If there were no platoons in American football, I think you might have 1 or more players die per year, especially in the NFL. I've heard former players say their body doesn't start to feel normal until Wednesday evening after a Sunday game. Imagine how long it would take them to recover if they were out there the whole game. That's the reason players hate the Thursday night games so much. Of course, the owners don't care, they just care about the money. Well, and winning, of course, but mostly the money, lol.
@fifiwoof1969
@fifiwoof1969 10 месяцев назад
@@robbarbieri8676 to me sport is about stamina and endurance and when you're about to collapse from the nonstop action you deliver your best effort - see none of that in American Football (sorry NFL is just a league of the game). Some of the sports I mentioned also have lengthy unnecessary stoppages, there by ruining the flow and fatigue nature. If you've never seen it before check out a full game of "Australian Rules Football" - AFL is a league of it or Rugby League - NRL is their league, Rugby Union, Soccer (REAL football). It's just back and forth nonstop action unless the ball goes out or there's an injury, etc. I'm not sure if it's in full on RU-vid but try looking up "State of Origin Rugby League 1994 Game 1" - New South Wales v Queensland. Even if you don't know the rules, watch the flow of the whole game and THEN the ending. As a Queenslander I STILL orgasm at that game! Then compare THAT to your best example from American football. Tom Brady coming back from 28-3 down to win the Super Bowl in overtime? GREAT ending? Nowhere near the endurance of any other sport!

what happened was the runners were both blinded by the ugly bright yellow jerseys they were wearing.the throw was bad from the first baseman, if the third baseman did not pick it. the runner would have scored.
