Tafarel was amazing. He saved Brazil so many times through the years. What pity Ronaldo had that mysterious issue at the finals. Brazil could have had a a 3 in a row WC titles.
I was 10 years old when i watched this match and I was very happy with Brazil's classification. But if I had known what would come next, i would have preferred Brazil to have been eliminated. France's victory made many brazilians stop supporting the Brazilian team. Because many suspected it was a sold match.
I suspect that was the case. Something seems very suspicious about that final. The same way the entire French squad came down with flu before the 2022 final.
Thierry Henry on Holland's brilliant side of the late 90s 🗣️ "I used to love, still love, and always will love to see a Dutch team play. In the history of the game we all know that it's not always the case that you win like that. But for me that's how you should play football: the Dutch way." Isn't it strange that Dennis's Holland side never won a tournament? "Yes and I'm actually sad about that. In 1998 we [the French team] were scared of the Dutch. When Brazil won the semi-final on penalties we celebrated. I'll always remember that." Because Holland were better than Brazil? "By a distance! That Brazil team wasn't bad. But the Dutch for me were definitely the best team of the tournament. Who knows what would have happened in the final? But at that moment we were very relieved. Trust me. More than relieved. I was young but I remember the older talking. They really didn't want to play against Holland because however you try to play against them, they're strong, they're fast, they're technically great, they have a lovely way of playing. Everybody wanted to avoid that Dutch team. Always do, to be honest. And then they did the same thing in 2000. Again we didn't want to play them and, again we were on the other side of the draw, waiting. That Dutch team with Dennis didn't win anything - crazy! Too crazy for me."
@4:42 Davids with a dirty late challenge on Ronaldo. I can't stand players like Davids, Keane, Gattuso, at least in their defensive mindset. The rules don't go out the window just because you've styled yourself as a hard tackler or someone who stops the opponents no matter what. I think it was Wim Jonk who made the preposterous claim of it being a dive to the referee in an indignant and demonstrative fashion. Ronaldo was on great form in this game, a shame he was not himself at all in the final.
It was not a dive from Ronaldo, but yours is an absurd clueless comment. I bet you never EVER played football in your life; nobody who played at least some decent level game would consider that Davids challenge dirty. Go back to school and learn the sport. The rules don't go out the window just because you dream of players only doing perfect tackles. Football is a complex sport, and fouls are part of it; even hard fouls; even voluntary hard fouls; and cards are there to punish them. Davids tackles was only late, and Ronaldo is fast as f***, not easy to be clean. And in any case, tough tackles are a HUGE part of defense and psychological aspect of the game. Being tough, physically and psychologically is part of the sport. Ronaldo recovered quickly from that tackle, as you can see.
