Byron -- I love watching all your stuff, but to me, this one's special. Since I learned about Syntropic Agroforestry, I've dreamed about one day traveling to Brazil to meet master practitioners, see older systems, and FEEL what it's like to be there. Your capturing and sharing of your journey feels like the next best thing, and I'm soaking in so much that I never would have expected to be able to do from far. It's a surreal privilege to watch this. Very grateful to you for following your heart and bringing us along!

Recomendo o canal de Antônio Gomides e O Sítio das Mangueiras de Lucas. Eles são bem didáticas e ensinam muito bem, aprenderam com Ernst Gotsch.

I have yet to experience what a blessing it would be to be around those who are as excited about agroforestry and just growing food as I am in person. Looking forward to making real connections with people this year in my area! Great video my man.

Just recently discovering this subject. Really enjoying the concepts but as a working professional Arborist am feeling the need to comment on the pruning cuts that have been displayed. My training tells me that these are examples of topping cuts (height reduction of dominant trees) and are very detrimental to the tree. Much better for the tree would be a re-leadering cut which entails cutting the stem/trunk off at a lateral branch (ideally the branch that remains should be at least 1/3 the thickness of the trunk/stem that has been cut off). Also the cuts should not be made at a random location on the stem, but should always be at a node. Maybe my experience is biased, and maybe the tropical trees shown in the video react differently to the cuts being made on them, but just wanted to contribute my 15 years of tree pruning experience. Keep the videos coming, I really am inspired by what you are creating and putting out there from a systems perspective.

Plants do like being visisted. A plant fruits more when people are walking by it because it knows there are creatures around to spread its seeds. Thats the whole reason fruit exists, to entice animals like us.

@@byron.in.new.zealand there's a few people growing mushrooms here in Hawaii. Another species of chicken of the woods grows on Koa which doubles as extremely valuable timber, not sure if you can grow that in NZ. One farmer experimented and managed to grow shitake on ice cream bean. Another guy used lime to sterilize wood chips and grew blue oysters. So much potential to maximize the lowest strata.

One thing that strikes me most about all these food forests is the lack of grass between the rows. I can’t stop the couch, kikua, and nut sedge invading my entire 6 month old system. It’s in the swales, the beds, the footpath that was layered with cardboard, hay and then hardwood chip. I spent hours and hours pulling it by hand before my first chop and drop 3 weeks ago. And it’s coming back again through the organic matter. 🤦‍♂️ I can’t wait until the system pushes it out one day.
@byron.in.new.zealand

Happens quicker than you can imagine with the right management / planting. It’s almost entirely gone out of my systems, even the 1 year old systems are already starting to push it out
