Brazil's Lula calls for China mediated peace talks to end Ukraine war | DW News

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said while he is not interested in supplying ammunition to Ukraine, he has a mediation proposal involving China.
"Brazil is a country of peace. And that is why Brazil does not want any participation in this war, not even indirectly," Lula said during a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is on a four-day visit to the region.
Lula said his country would work with others to help reach peace in Ukraine, and pointed out China's role in peace talks.
"Our Chinese friends play a very important role in this," the left-wing politician said. "It's time for China to step up," Lula emphasized, adding that
Brazil, China and Russia form part of the BRICS emerging economies which also include India and South Africa, however Brazil was among the 141 countries at the UN General Assembly last year who voted to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

First of all, in order to stop the war, USA needs to step out of the issue! USA does not wanna stop the war as it benefits the most out of it. Secondly, Europe and Ukraine need to be independent from USA not being as puppets or proxy. Then I would say there is hope for the war to stop!

I am not saying Ukraine has to pick up side, but in fact Ukraine did pick up side on the West and America. That changes status of quo and geo balance. Do you think Russia likes that? Officially China regards the territorial integrity of any sovereign nation as sacrosanct. That is why until now China does not recognize Crimea or any part of Ukraine as independent states or Russian territories. I think China views Russia as intellectually weak right now and they cannot get involved with that public image failure. Personally I think China and a coalition of international forces bordering Russia including all countries from Japan to Finland to take back their land and give Russia a chance to redeem and modernize itself with different borders. The western edge of Russia is completely lined with territory stolen from European territories and the Western two thirds of Russia occupies many Asian nations including parts of China an Japan. The question is, why continue to let Russia maintain their active imperialism over all these different countries in their weakest era of history ever? Russia could be a great country if they kept it strictly to Russian land and didn't have a dictator

Security council reform will likely only take place in the wake of a major war. For the moment none of the existing permanent members are likely to vote themselves off, generally they don't want to dilute their influence by agreeing to new members either. There are good cases for Japan and India amongst others, to be permenant members. Japanese and Indian membership is specifically blocked by China. Would Brazilian membership be acceptable to Argentina? Would Nigerian membership be acceptable to South Africa and vice versa

@Zolandia this concern stems from a misunderstanding about Agentine-Brazilian relations. Latin American is a region where diplomacy is the primary means of dialogue between our countries and there is a profound sense of camaraderie and friendship among our neighbours. In global terms, Latin America is one of the most peaceful regions of the world when it comes to war and I truly believe that the vast majority of our populations has no interest whatsoever in changing that. We in Brazil respect and admire our Argentine brothers and sisters and I believe they would not oppose a Brazilian seat as permanent member of the security council. On the other hand, I believe Latin American countries would feel better represented if any country in the region would be granted such a seat. Brazil and Argentina have enjoyed very close and mutually respecting relationship for a very long time. And furthermore, Latin American countries are painfully aware of our vulnerability to Western exploitation and disturbances to our democracies and if there is one thing that can bind people closely together is resistance against shared rivals.

What is it that South Americans have that would make such a change to the battlefield? Ammo? Europeans have plenty, missiles? The USA has plenty, Brazil produces beef and sugar, not ammo, tanks nor any weapons. I'm Brazilian, I don't support Lula or Bolsonaro. But one thing I and most Brazilians agree on is that Brazil doesn't have to get involved in any wars. Brazil is a neutral country. I don't like it when Lula suggests that Russia and Ukraine are _equally_ do blame. Regardless of one's opinion on NATO's expansion, only Russia broke international law. While I do understand he's acting on Brazil's direct best interests (BRICS), that amount of cynicism isn't something I stomach easily. His position is otherwise pretty reasonable. Anyone who provides arms to Ukraine can't possibly be in a position to mediate peace talks - and that's what Brazil could do best in this conflict. It's not like we are an industrial powerhouse that could tip the balance of this war anyway.

Brazilian view is pragmatic aswell. It doesn't make any sense for it to get involved, even if most Brazilians agree that Russia is the sole agressor and should blamed for everything that is happening. It is just that it's not worth for Brazilian diplomacy to public adopt this position.

The people here not resolve own war against Narcotraffic and criminals, weak people and weak moral. The government no have strong posture,when if left aligned is worst; Venezuela and Cuba has one billion of debt with Brazil, they not payed and Lula is promises give more credit only because have the same ideological alignment. Negotiate what exactly? I've yet to hear an answer which doesn't imply infringing upon Ukraine's right to self determination and territorial integrity. These are the basics. Also China being the genocidal dictatorship that it is has no place in these discussions, it is not involved and shouldn't be.
