My Brazilian friends shared with me some awesome young coconut tips and tricks. Brazil is one of the top producers of coconuts, producing over 3 million tons of coconuts each year. We like to go right to the source and buy them in bulk. Here they are R$1.00 which is about .30 cents in US currency. It’s the cheapest way to go. Otherwise you’ll pay about R$4 a piece.
Opening a coconut requires some tools. You might already have some of these items in your kitchen. A serrated or paring knife can be used to open the coconut. I recommend a little coco drill that can be purchased on Amazon (if you’re in the States) or bought in stores all around Bahia. Sometimes you might need a funnel for pouring the water in a bottle and a strainer for catching any posable woodchips.
I always ask to have the tops of our coconuts trimmed for easy puncturing later. They will all do this for no extra charge. If you don’t have cut coconuts, you can go in through the side of the coconut because the sides are thinner than the ends.
Coconut water is great to blend with other juices, smoothies, soups and with fresh squeezed limes. It depends on the size but coconuts produce around 10 ounces of water.
