The pre-WW1 German Mausers are probably the finest quality rifles ever made. Owning a mint 1909 i can tell you that they're FLAWLESS.

I was impressed with the build quality of this and it looks like it has seen better days.

I had the honor of having a copy of the Mauser 1908 in my hands when I went to Pernambuco, around 1997. It is incredible to imagine that weapons like these went down in history for their efficiency.

I've been collecting Mausers for some time now and have been on the hunt for a German production Gewehr 98. They aren't all that hard to find, but prices for them are through the roof and, unfortunately, more than I am willing to pay. In my hunt, I have come across rifles used by various other nations like this 1908. My question is, could I still fill that gap in my collection for a G98 with a Brazilian or Turk mauser? They appear extremely similar minus the rear sight and longer upper hand guard.

@milsurpmagazine9515 22 дня назад
You could indeed, other than the obvious difference you mentioned they are very similar guns and built with the same exacting standards as the G98. If you aren’t a purist and don’t have to have the G98 this makes a suitable substitute and it’s a blast to shoot.

@milsurpmagazine9515 I appreciate the response. In the future, when I save up some more gun money, I will definitely look into the 1908. By chance, do you have any experience with the Peruvian model 1909? I came across one after watching this video, and they are basically identical. Featuring the Lange-Vizier sights and all for a similar price to the 1908.

No but Mauser supplied many countries with guns and in near identical design so I imagine the action would be the same. I also like the Argentinian version as well.

@milsurpmagazine9515 I guess I'll have to look into those as well. Thank you for the information and I will be keeping up with your channel.

Mauser 1908, the famous rifle of the cangaceiro Lampião. Lampião was a type of gunslinger who operated in the northeast region at the beginning of the 20th century. In terms of comparison Lampião was like John Wesley Hardin, but I believe that Lampião was more violent and deadly. In 1931 Lampião appeared in the New York Times. In many northeastern Brazilian states such as Pernambuco, Paraíba, Sergipe, Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte there are themes about cangaço, whether in literature, in the cordel (a type of traditional poem from the northeast), music, movies , in popular legends and in culture in general. It is not very difficult for you to go to bars or themed restaurants in the northeast and see statues of cangaceiros or examples of Mauser 1908, Winchester 1873, Peceamaker and Colt Positive Police revolvers on the walls. the northeast is the hottest region in Brazil, having a unique climate of caatinga vegetation, a mixture of deserts and savannas, with cacti, huge rocks, dry land and cracked ground due to the heat. One of the stories that I think is the coolest is about the origin of the name Lampião. They say that one night in a fight against the police, Lampião fired so fast with a Winchester 1873 that the shots lit up the night and the barrel of the heated rifle glowed like a lamp. Northeast is the Brazilian Texas.

Wow there seems to be a wealth of history behind these guns getting into the hands of some pretty ruthless and rebellious groups. Thanks!

That was the gun for cangaceiros. Their leader, the famous bandit Lampião, used it! Cangaceiros were bandits from the Northeast of Brazil, a region that has always been neglected by the government. The police were very cruel to the innocent people and also to the family of the bandits. Because it is a difficult and neglected place of life, some people who were born there used to take justice into their own hands (vengeance vengeance) or become criminals simply to improve their lives and then joined in gangs of cangaceiros to escape from prison or certain death. These bandits abandoned their own name and gained random nicknames: Midnight, Lampião, Corisco, Labareda. This was to prevent the family from being tortured because of the crimes. The cangaceiros were also very cruel to those who denounced them. Cruel season! It is said that this weapon in the video was one of the most used by the gang. Cangaço is the closest to the western we had here. Except that the bandit bandits wore many stolen silver and gold jewelry, garments adorned with stitching and wore a hat that had its brim facing upwards broken and adorned with religious / mystical symbols. They were great at shooting and used to attack farms and cities that did not collaborate with them. They also lived in the caatinga, a region with little water and plants full of huge thorns. For this reason, they wore heavy leather clothing. They even invented a dance called Xaxado. In this dance they danced armed, since the police always chased them and could appear at any time. Very interesting story of Cangaço. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uCIM6D9v0DQ.html This is one of the only real footage of cangaceiros in their time. Interesting, they are carrying Mausers, makes you wonder, since the guns were supposed to be supplied to the military. Thanks for sharing. 👍

@@milsurpmagazine9515 The cangaceiros' most common weapons were Winchester 1873, Mauser 1908, Colt 1892 rifles, Nagant 1883 revolvers, parabellum p08 pistol and rare examples of Peceamaker and Colt 1877 revolvers. The point is that the Mauser 1908 rifle was for military use. How did they get those rifles? well... they managed to extort from the colonels (farmers who had land, that is, a lot of influence, like a feudal lord). The cangaceiros extorted the colonels and kept those rifles. Despite the Winchester 1873 being one of the most used shotguns, having the Mauser 1908 was a revolution for the cangaceiros, becoming a symbol of the cangaço, the Brazilian western.

@@mestresg6601 That makes sense. It would seem to me that the 1873 lever action would have been much easier to manage being on horse back than a long range Mauser. It’s amazing the history behind these old relics.

@@milsurpmagazine9515 The cangaço period began in 1775 in Pernambuco, but its heyday was between 1870 and 1938. The most famous of the cangaceiros was Virgulino Ferreira, commonly known as Lampião, who joined the cangaço in 1919 and died only in 1938. Despite the year, years The 20s, 30s and early 40s in Brazil felt more like the end of the 19th century, especially in the northeast of the country. I would love to share more information, unfortunately most videos and articles on the topic are in Portuguese.

@@milsurpmagazine9515 Yes yes. The Winchester 1873 was very versatile on horses. I have a winchester 1873 at home that belonged to my great grandfather who was part of the police that hunted cangaceiros. In northeastern Brazil, the Winchester 1873 became so popular that they earned the nickname Papo-Amarelo ( Papo-Amarelo = Yellow-Bellied, due to a piece of golden brass it had, vaguely reminiscent of its American name, Yellow-Boy).

I found only one problem with your video. That hook on the underside of the front barrel band is NOT for stacking. It’s for the sling which has a wire hanger above the top keeper. It was used to tighten up the sling for parades.
