Thanks for all the informative videos! Looking back at your "dab of bronze" video, I'm now curious if you need to re-flux those joints, or if there's enough left in the material that it isn't ever necessary?
@897473
@897473 5 лет назад
For clean material, there is enough residual flux that re-fluxing isn't necessary. But, it is wise to check the finished joint to make sure that the braze holds. The AWS (American Society of Welding emailed me and asked if they could use that video. The AWS is very particular about welding standards. I asked if they were going to use that video as a "way not to do it". But no, they liked the idea.

Great video! I have a soft spot for good old fashioned brazing. The problem I always run into is how to clean the residual flux off the piece after. Any tips on the best way to clean it before applying the finish?
@897473
@897473 5 лет назад
If the piece is small you can dip it immediately in very hot water. For larger pieces, heat up some water to as hot as you can get and then pour over the braze. If the water is almost boiling, the piece will dry almost instantly so there is little fear of rust if it is steel. Once dry, wire brush just to make sure you get it all.

A few questions for you George . (1) do you only use 3/32 flux covered rod for your prjects , brazing the 1/16 , 3/32,1/8, and 5/32 stock together ?.....(2). I notice you have a Hypertherm 30 plazma cutter , and I was thinking about getting that same model myself . But I only have 20 amp service in my garage . What service will your Hypertherm 30 work with ? Will it work with a 20 amp service as well ? ........After purchasing several of your videos , and watching your videos of using your Henrob torch . I purchased the newer DHC 2000, and tried using it to cut 20 guage threw 1/8th inch stock like i have seen them do in videos claiming the Henrob/DHC 2000 cutting threw said stock like a plazma cutter . I have had little to no success in doing this after several attempts . That is why I am asking you about the Hypertherm 30 . While I am asking . If you do have experience cutting with your Henrob . Do you think you will be able to do a video on how to cut 20 guage threw 1/8th inch stock ? I think such a video would get you many thousands of views . Thank you in advance for your kind reply Sir .

I haven't spent much time with DHC 2000 for cutting since I have the plasma cutter. I'm not sure what my amperage is. For your amperage, contact Hypertherm on their web site. They are very personable. Any question I've had they've answered promptly. Last time I contacted them was by phone. I probably won't get around to doing a video on cutting with the DHC. There are a number of videos already. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MpTPnLsYoDs.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NP9HWp9oV8k.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ima2ITyMV4c.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GAeeW_ojpZA.html

George: I am very new to all of this. I have a small oxy/acetylene torch with 10cubic ft ace tank and 20CF O2. I don't have a welding table. Can you suggest something cheap (to take to place of a welding table) and small that I can begin to practice brazing,welding and cutting? Fire Brick?? Thanks.
@897473
@897473 5 лет назад
You might think about picking up some firebrick. You can get these at a builder's supply. Firebrick will withstand the heat although in time they do break from the heat. It will work for brazing and gas welding, but I'm no sure how well it will work for cutting. This is a quick answer and if I think of anything that would be better I'll get back to you. For brazing you will want tinted safety glasses. For gas welding you'll want welding goggles. For cutting an old steel tire rim would work for something temporary.

@@gregsaiter3768 Flashback aresstors have become a mainstay with torches. Prices seem to vary considerably. Get a pair that fit you torch and hoses. I've never had a flashback, even before I started using flashback aresstors.

It is more appropriate to be unhappy with welding supply shops that overcharge. Often, the difference is not 10-20-30%, but double or triple. I hate to see local suppliers disappear, but me, the little guy with no income, cannot afford to subsidize overpriced suppliers to keep them open. I am obligated (to myself) to look for the best deals. It is either that, or I cannot afford my hobby, or to fix my cars. I am certainly not paying for the advice of those who work behind the counter. Generally, in most cases, it is they who could benefit from my advice. I hate to sound arrogant about that, but that is usually how it is. A few years behind a parts counter does not qualify one in a trade.
