Breadline Britain: youth unemployment
Subscribe to the Guardian HERE: bitly.com/UvkFpD
Meet 22-year-old Liam, who has no qualifications and struggles to find work in one of Britain's youth unemployment hotspots, Middlesbrough. Liam left home and school at 16. He drifted in and out of casual work and became homeless. Now he has the possibility of a job, and dreams regular work, a wife and family. But has he left it too late? Should he have stayed at school?

Liam’s mindset at 22, thinking he’s left it too late, is such a common thing and I felt the same way. If anyone’s reading this, let me tell you it’s never too late to turn things around. To start a trade, go back to school, etc. 22 is a baby. I’m 30 and have just started nursing school, I feel like I’ve left it too late but there’s a 50 year old out there thinking I’m young too. Don’t worry about mistakes you made when you were young, just start, any day of the week and keep going with one foot in front of the other until you’re there. The mindset is what holds us back. Poor Liam has had some adversity thrown his way that’s for sure but he was still young here and I hope things improved since

To be unemployed and poor in this economy is akin to being the one(s) left standing after the music ends in a game of musical chairs. There are simply not enough jobs to go round.

If I saw him walking down the street I would think "another one who can't be bothered to get a job while the rest of us are going to work everyday" but watching this video makes me realise even more that you shouldn't judge people too quickly. Poor guy, I feel sorry for him.

It was such a struggle in my boots, I was unemployed for four years after leaving school with the lowest GCSEs, aged 19 had nothing. Parent had health problems. Had to start at the bottom all done myself. No one owed me anything I made it out myself, that time I was so pissed off. I then worked many jobs and I didn't get what I desired. My town is a shit town. I then decide to join the British Army, they recruit me me in as a sponsor, training nights were so gruelling in the TA. No women or love life in the Army, you just sleep with men. I barely made myself Army materiel. I passed out of the Army, March 2013. Send to conflict in Op HELIC shortly after, then joined regular 1 year in RLC role. I bore out of the Army. Got Army my resettlement Joint Service Pay (JSP) in May 2014. Pay was awful but thats the job. I have been abroad to Canada, England is shit and offers nothing. It has nothing.

There are a permanent 2.5 million British unemployed of whom 1 million are young people who have never worked and may never work in future. Their jobs and opportunities are going to EU nationals and others who are allowed to jump ahead of them in the British jobs market - often recruited directly from abroad without the job ever having been offered to British people. BRITONS FIRST IN BRITAIN - BRITISH JOBS FOR BRITISH WORKERS.

The solution is move abroad on a move as it may be hard, but the long term in great outcome. But yet British people never move abroad. England has a big investment problem. In Canada they trying to bigger their economy and offer people a better living, they offer jobs in the windows over there. Britain offer jobs on the computers somehow, which basically means 'FUCK OFF! we don't wan't you in our jobs. Housing is so fucking expensive, don't you forget about that. How can you get and pay your mortgage off. It is a good reason to move abroad or do something interesting of self talent. You still get a job in UK and your underpaid. UK offers good culture, music and of course football. But England is shit live in.

This is quite misleading? It's not as if his life will magically transform into a happy one once he gets work? He clearly has a lot of hidden pain and unresolved issues, since he split from his parents at such a young age? He just seems plain depressed? But of course such questions will usually be avoided by most people...

it won't be a problem if you want to survive, you can clean in a restaurant, working in supermarket, work on construction site, there are plenty of ways to survive. You will be paid, and you can round up your bills if you live tight. The problem is: it doesn't stretch any further, and for youth, that's devastating. It will be ok to make 25K a year, but making 50K is hard, and if you want to make 500K a year it's almost impossible today. If you want to become a millionaire in 8 years, you probably need to move out; If you want to be a billionaire in 25 years, you sure have to move out. But remember, all risks on you! Europe today still support failures, poor people, low-income classes. But if you go somewhere else where you think you can become a billionare or sth, I am sure they don't support you when you fail, or you might end up pretty bad. It's your choice what you want to be.

Two things that can help: 1. Make the most of education in young life (it is the key to getting you out of poverty); and 2. Society instill itself into supporting the family and making sure that kids come first.I say this as the son of migrants who came here in the 1960's. We lived in abject poverty but with the support of family and a relentless urge to learn and keep on top - I made it and now have a decent job able to support myself and my family.

Not all benefit claimants are looking at the view that everything is for free. There are great young people out there with the drive to study, get a good job. And do the right thing. I see them volunteering everyday. And are good kids. And there are many who give much to this country. By being carers looking after family members with sickness and disability. And. Sign up in the forces to defend this country. And. You must realise. Even the politicians and companies subsidised by tax money. Are in receipt of benefit too.

I know of a young girl who is British. She is now 23 years old. Left school with no qualifications. She's had a very difficult life, but has now made it. She is now a senior Spa receptionist in a five Star hotel in London. She started at a very low wage job in a two star hotel and suffered abuse but stuck through it. She learnt to grow up in the big world and while working full time she did her qualifications and beauty course level three. She then moved to another hotel to work in a spa and worked herself up to become senior Recepcionist because she had experience and was willing to learn and work hard and her qualifications did help. It's all payed off. She is now happy Woking as a part time therapist and senior receptionist and wants to become manager in years to come. My advise is start from the bottom in any job and work your way up and study a career you would like to do. Having experience and qualifications will help you jump the quew and to something better. You will feel better with yourself. I hope this help and good luck.

I don't get it, I left school at 15, I got my first job at 18 and I've had 4 jobs since then, I've never been out of work, I have no qualifications and there's nothing particularly special about me on paper... I just show good character and willing to do well, I have drive and ambition despite having no degree and I seem to be getting places... I'm almost 23, same as the guy in this video, I live with my girlfriend in a mortgaged house and earn 24k a year... I don't think the problem is the country, or the system, or the politicians, I think the problem is the people, like the guy in this video, he has no drive, no ambition, he doesn't strive for better and he's not willing to put the effort in. You have to start somewhere, there is PLENTY of jobs going, literally 100,000s of jobs, go out and get one, work hard and MAKE IT HAPPEN you can't sit around blaming everybody else for your own lack of success, it's all down to YOU

Kha Zix SO because you experience what you experience, that means others cannot experience anything else? The world doesn't exist only through your perspective, it exists through everyone's, and everyone's is unique. What ever personal qualities you may have, and the opportunities and environment you exist in which has enabled you to be "successful", a lot of people don't have that combination, through no fault of their own, and yet people like yourselves, because you can't see it through your limited experience of this world, undermine their struggle by implying that nothing is wrong, because it's not for you.
