Thanks for this Ross! I bought a copy of your book. I'm looking forward to digging into it and finally learning how to get out of playing cliche blues.
Ross, firstly thanks all the great work! I have bought almost everything you put out so far, including the book. With that said, if you dont mind, could I possibly make a suggestion? Would you consider adding a loop (repeat) and a half time button to the video examples? Next to the volume, casting, CC, settings etc? The first would eliminate the need to move from the guitar to the computer at every go and the second would make it heaps simpler to go half tempo as we wouldnt need going into setting to change the video speed. We could hear it a couple of times slow then go back to the original speed. If further fine tuning is neded (going to 25% or 75%) we could just use the settings as currently available. This is far from a deal breaker, it may even be a small thing, though the amazing slowdowner interface really nailed the concept of practing in front of a computer without going back and fourth. I could be wrong but I believe it would make the interface a lot more use friendly. Cheers mate! 🤜🤛
@@TimWiechers-qg9cv You could do that but if you weren't mixing in major 3rd's of those chords into the minor pentatonics for D and E, it would sound quite amatuer-ish in my opinion. Personally I like to avoid this type of approach.
I feel almost guilty feeding off this free lesson. Thank you, my man, this is a) a very very valuable lesson and b) ridiculous for being free. Guilty I might feel, but I will take. Quite seriously this is a great lesson , and your guitar talent is only overshadowed by your generosity. Thank you.
I'm ~25 minutes in and, having played for ~10+ years, infrequently; this makes a whole lot of sense to my ears - One of the best tutorials i've come across.
This is how you promote a course. This was a genuinely great lesson, well constructed, no rambling, useful overlays, and full of legitimately useful information. I'll be grabbing the book because of this. EDIT: I purchased the book, amazing content for the price.
I’m only 17 minutes into this video, but I can already tell that this is the lesson I needed so badly to study. I got pretty good at playing guitar through my 20’s and into my 30’s Unfortunately, I lost most of my skills when I became a father( no time to jam) but I’m recently trying to get back into guitar playing.
The 12 bar blues progression is perfection. A great inventor, whose name escapes me at the moment, said simplicity is the source of genius. The trick is to get from point to point without appearing to be stumbling blindly down the path. Love your lessons and need them desperately. I'm sick to death of taking 3 lefts to go right. Think about that statement for a few minutes, 3 lefts equals going right. Teach on my brother. From an old wannabe guitar player.
This is unreal! I just watched this through and it's pure gold. There are weeks of stuff in this video alone to work through. Thanks so much for taking the time to make it and to be so thorough yet clear in your explanations. I'll be ordering a copy of your book in support of your good self.
I'm 55 years old South Korean. This is the best free blues guitar lesson I've ever seen in my life. So, I bought the book and online lesson. Your book is really what I want and fantastic. From now on you are my teacher. Thank you for your great job. ^^
I’ve been playing for over 30 years and this would be one of the best lessons I have come across. The book is great too, if you got a lot from this lesson I highly recommend the book to take your learning even further. Great work Ross!
Hi Ross.. I've been playing blues among others since so long, but just going through this lesson for only half an hour I already feel I'm playing real deep and richer blues like never before! Thank you solo much.
Is this the best instructional video on blues guitar ever?! Why wasn't I told about this years ago? Everything explained so clearly and logically. Well done lad.
You just taught in an hour, what it taught ne over 20 years to learn. I hope people understand how good of a lesson this is. For me, over the years I learned the pentatonic in all positions and then as I played over tracks, I found all the filler notes to add in. Never knew much music theory just knew that those extra notes sounded good so they started becoming a regular part of my impression.
I’m so glad that concept is circulating! 1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7 (Mixolydian + the Blues scale) are the most useable notes over a Dominant 7 chord (1-3-5-b7). Even the remaining 3 notes of b2/b6/7 can be used in chromatic lines.
Hi Ross, I am enjoying this master class so much. I am a professional vocalist and I have been fronting bands for 40 years I’m 69 years old and Have been playing guitar for five years. I’ve played with so many guitarists in the past that didn’t know how to do anything but copy things note for note, had no clue about Theory or how to improvise. Early on in my journey, I instinctively knew that it was important to do things like learn some theory, learn where every note on the entire fretboard was, and learn how to play arpeggio’s and triads, especially dom seven arpeggios, because I am mostly into the blues. I previously taught my self to play through 12 bar, blues Progressions with Dom seven cords using just dom 7 arpeggios. This lesson of yours is a perfect continuation of that. I just wanted to thank you for the great master class. It is helping me tremendously….Todd B……ps. How would you handle the quick change 12 bar blues?
RU-vid at its best! This is how I wish it to be. Calm, informative, constructive, good-willing, caring. You are a great teacher and became a mentor for me straight away. Even though I'm new (once again) to guitar and now swinging between them drums ;) Thank you and alike other users already mentioned a bit of shame is oscillating that I just took it for free. Thank you, Sir!
Lifelong guitarist who plateaued (think that’s how you spell it!) about 35 years ago, kids/work etc. Now retired and 64. What a great video and an absolute game changer. Ross you’re a tremendous communicator and teacher and I love the feeling of actually learning and progressing. You need to do a video on how to avoid tendonitis due to obsessive practice now! Definitely getting your book. Brilliant presentation.
Hey man! I want to thank you for this fantastic lesson. When i was learning the blues, long before the internet, I had only records and a phonograph and endless needle-drops to learn from. If I'd had access to great teachers such as yourself, how much faster and better I would have developed!!! Thank you for this, and I'm hoping your book is even more helpful, because I'm going to go grab it right now. Cheers!
Just bought your book Ross. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this concept. Thanks for this masterclass and your book. Probably the best resource available anywhere for us old guys that have been playing the same licks for 100 years.😎
I’ve watched days worth of guitar lessons on RU-vid and this has already explained so much in a way I finally understand crystal clear. I will definitely be buying the book. Thank you for taking your precious time to share with us.
Thank you so much for this lesson, a lot has "clicked" for me today. I shall watch it again tomorrow and have downloaded the free TABs and backing tracks and have added your book to me amazon account for future download. Really, thank you so much.
Hey Ross ! Rob here as a newcomer. That opening blues track was about as sweet as they come. No shortage of notes which makes it even more amazing as to how sweet it sounded. Not one wasted note throughout ! ! My guitar playing career is literally a graveyard of past teachers with pretty much all of them knowing how to play, but not knowing how to break it down in to smaller understandable AND useful chops.
This is a very well thought out and presented class providing pertinent information that took me almost 10 years to learn and master on my own. What I wouldn't do to take this video back in time to give myself many years ago. Great lessons, Ross. It's even more mind-blowing when one considers that it's free.
Wow Ross, you’ve answered questions I’ve been struggling with for years. I’ve heard these concepts before but never had them talked through so clearly, thank you. Well done mate. Gonna buy the book now.
Not really - everyone who DOES finally nail playing the Blues following this method will sound similar but not the same. I like Eric Clapton, Albert & BB King, Johnny Winter, Steve Morse, Mick Ronson and Captain Sensible and my playing wil be totally unique as will yours.
I bought Ross' book several weeks ago and I am glad that I did. Hands down, this describes the blues scales much clearer than any other book that I have seen to date. If you want to add colour to your improv, then this is the way forward. Ross is a great teacher who puts the message across clearly and his videos emphasize what a talented musician he is. If there is one book to buy for advanced players of blues, then this is it. Outstanding Ross!!
Thanks so much Ross! Watched this when it came out and I enjoyed it so much. Just came her to say I really genuinely appreciate your continued contributions to the blues guitarist community. This is genuinely the best there is on RU-vid on chord changes and the blues.
Well done Ross, I'm not even a guitarist, my background is in Jazz saxophone. For a very long time now I thought or was taught that in order to play any blues you must first of all memorise a ton of blues scales, but they didn't work for me. I always loved blues guitar but I postponed it because I couldn't find anyone who explained it to me the way you do in this video. It's so well explained and surely I'm motivated to buy your blues book/s. Thanks.
This is great, I've been so bored with my own playing and needed to spice it up a bit. Those passing tones are already doing the job after about 15 minutes of noodling around.
I've been playing 20+ years, for the last few years I've focused much more on theory and this may be the absolute best lesson I've ever watched (and I've watched A LOT). Bravo!
I bought the book just to support you because this master class is so excellent. You have the unusual combination of skills by being both a great player and a great teacher (I should know I teach on RU-vid myself - video editing). You have really matured over the years into an excellent communicator. Thank you for this.
I just bought your book Ross. I live in Barbados so I had it shipped from Florida. I should get it soon I plan to study it like an exam hahahaha. I am an intermediate/ advanced player but as you said I am looking to perfect my solos although I play fast and flashy I would would like to play with more melodic content just like you do. keep up the good work and thanks.
This masterclass is such a generous gift. I picked up your book and have started working through the content and lesson material. Wow - this is game changing stuff. Fantastic job on the book and its concepts. I'm a "seasoned" (older) player and have been stuck to the point that my blues and blues rock vocabulary has gotten stale and personally boring. I'm reinvigorated! Love the blues - great seeing so many newer blues artists & their popularity. This "old dog" is learning new tricks and it is both inspiring and fun. Congrats to you as you build your business (your production work is top notch). Having followed you from your Udemy courses way back, RU-vid subscription and Bulletproof Guitar website and courses I am a grateful fan of your talent and teaching approach. (Also just found your Novi Sad instrumental - just beautiful!) Cheers - Bob
I watch quite a bit of guitar tutorial videos and I gotta say your's are some of the most enjoyable and easy to grasp. I almost always have some new ideas or ways of thinking musically. Keep it up!
Unreal that this is a free lesson. Bought your book because of this, and its fantastic. It has inspired me to chase the theory concepts you introduce deeper. Can't wait to keep learning, big props Ross
I just bought this guy's book. I've bought a lot of lessons, subscribed to Truefire for years. There's one thing different about this book. I think this guy actually wants you to learn this stuff!! I don't know about anybody else but for 17 or 18 bucks, it sure as heck is working for me!
I'm glad Ross brought this to RU-vid. I bought the book but the downloads seemed to be taking forever to load and were pretty sizeable. I gave up and was HOPING Ross would make it available here. Thanks for bringing some of it to the Tube Ross !!
Damn. Your introduction hit what I'm going through right on the head !! Yep, IV, V throws me off. By the time I get where I should be, it's back to the I chord .
I watched this video and immediately bought the book. It's rare to have someone play such tasteful blues and teach it well. I believe that we are going to hear great things from Ross in the future. I met Matt Schofield when he was 24 years old in Maidstone and he really impressed me. The same goes for Ross, he has really captured my attention. I have been playing blues for over 25 years and never really thought about playing minor or major pentatonic scales; I played what sounded good to my ear. This is great Ross!! I hope to see you play live one day. Outstanding!!!!
Ross is the Real deal! This lesson alone is worth more than the price of his paperback (which I just ordered btw, no brainer) I can"t believe how affordable this book is with all the efforts put into it! I almost feel guilty to pay so little for it!😁 I felt frustrated with all the money notes I was leaving on the table using the pentatonic/Blues scale. Ross has addressed this missing link in a clear, concise, professional manor and, I understand this may not be for everyone but for me, it is exactly what I was looking for and the timing of this couldn't be any better! Looking forward to put it all into practice, starting tonight! Thanks Ross! Keep up the good work, Im a fan!
UPDATE: The book is obviously great value. I just finished chapter 7 and really starting to get a feel of where my degrees are. I am going to Rinse & repeat the last chapters a few times before I embark on the turnover and close the loop. Finally making the progress I was looking for, I Definitely broke out of My Blues Guitar Rut!
I can't believe this. I've been struggling to play blues with the minor pentatonic since high school. This lesson is incredible! I'm grabbing your book. Thank you Ross!
Ross I'have bought this book. Your explanation is perfect and it's exactly what I was looking for. It's a complete manual to understand how to improvise on a blues and even if it contains many elements that I already have under my fingers (dominant arpeggios and scales, use of sixths, major thirds, etc..) I admit that like many people I don't have these elements with a complete and clear order. I think that your book is honestly the best buy on the market!! Congratulation for your playing and for your teaching job!!!
Wow! I have the book/lessons as part of my purchase of Bulletproof Guitar Player 2.0, so watching this masterclass gave me a great taste of what I have in store for the future. You've done a fantastic job of breaking down the complexity so that even I could follow the concepts, even if I can't put them into practice right now.
I bought your book a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it! Just when i get the hang of something, it challenges me all over again. I highly recommend it!
I learned all this stuff the hard way. But this is the clearest exposition of this material I have ever seen. Wish someone had taught me with such clarity. If you're new to these ideas, Ross is absolutely standout compared to much else on RU-vid.
Pretty sure I learned more today than I've learned in a long long time. I didn't learn everything note fer note but i sort of got a bunch new notes in my solo playing . Big thank you !!!!
I loved this. Been following a while on instagram and finally got around to watching this today. I can’t believe that I’ve been chucking these major 3rds in fir 20 years, without really knowing what I was doing. I’ve just been playing what sounded correct. I’ve learned a lot from this video and will buy the book
Many thanks for this masterclass lesson Ross. I will be deep diving into it step by step especially those chord changes, never seen a lesson like this before, again, thank you.
Loved the masterclass! Very insightful and explained in the most clear way possible. Landed here because of your amazing solo on @Pauldavids video and after this excellent masterclass I had no choice but to order your book so cheers to both! 😉
Thanks for this lesson, Ross. For whatever reason, your calming Scottish brogue is both comforting an encouraging. It's the same reason I follow Mike Boyd. Great guitar playing, by the way. You're one of the best.
