I personally like Ants Canada products. I find them very easy to clean and mould isn’t a problem. I strongly dislike ytong tests for mould and clean-ability. I haven’t had a Tar Heel nest but have heard plaster moulds easily and can be difficult to clean. If it’s in fact made of grout I might give them a shot. Thanks for the review.
I have just started in the hobby after half a decade watching youtube videos routinely. Caught a regular black ant queen at work in a water bottle and went and bought $400 of AC stuff hehe. But I have read a few instances of ants chewing through the ventilated port plugs AC uses. So i'll be watching out for that, as I bought ample and plan to hard modulate my setup.
@@GalaxyGeassS2 from my own experience, definitely fill the vented plugs with a bit of cotton ball. My carpenter (C. Penn) colony started to make the little holes bigger. I know others that have had them chew the middle out and escape. After adding the cotton they don’t seem to bother with it anymore. Make sure they have a good supply of protein, sugar water/nectar and water. Also enough space for the colony. If any of those are lacking, they will try harder to escape to find what they need.
I have used all 3 of these companies formicarium and agree that Tarheel is probably the best option. Each company has good design points. Somebody should take the best features from each and design the ultimate formicarium. In the meantime I just ordered Tarheel’s new Palladium all in one unit
@Proukkerr🐜 Since then I’ve switched most of my formicaria. I now use mostly Tarheel ants, Ants Australia, and Arthropod Antics nests. I’ve been meaning to get some esthetic ants nests, but I haven’t yet.
I think you need to get ahold of each of these as their Newer Counterparts and do a fresh review. Because, antscanda has changed and upgraded their products several times since these to make the Habitats better.
I found antscanada’s products to be a bit overpriced and they crack so easily when attaching test tubes that are supposed to fit, but they do look pretty cool, and don’t mould easily. I prefer making nests myself though! So much cheaper and it gives you more freedom to decorate how you want! Also it’s just really fun to do! I love making plaster ant farms for me colonies!
@@konven49 i know that about the tubes - but antscanada test tubes and test tube adapters don’t always fit properly, when they are supposed to, and they don’t soften in water because they are made fin acrylic
@@chicken5761 no you put the tubes in the hot water and it makes it a little smaller so you can put it in then it exspands because it is not hot anymore.
I've found with the TarHeel nests that the mesh covered reservoir, there's one in the bottom of this one, can get all moldy. Had one in the Inception Chamber formicarium. I legit cut the mesh off the top of mine so I could clean out all the gunk growing in there and used it for a feeding pit/arena, which was fun.
@@antsanatomy1436 If I ever order from them again I'll probably try a custom job asking for one without it or just stick to the ones that don't include one inside. The only ways I can think of for the internal resivoir is the sponge system like aus ants or filling a small void in the plaster like with tarheels inception chamber. Adding water to a sponge the ants can't reach through a small hole in the glass feels like the best alternative and they could always make a screened off void for the sponge. When the glass is removed you can replace the sponge.
That’s awesome! I hope they are alright. Whenever I email them about a product I bought and when it’s expected arrival will be he always responds real quick.
Hey, i know i am a little bit late with a comment on this vid but I just saw it and i want to get into ant keeping this year. I wanted to start with a Lasius Niger colony and I wondered if the Tar Heel Nest is maybe not accesible for them? I am not to sure how good they are able to climb, i would really appreciate a comment if you know anything about this :) Eitherway a rly good Video and a big help for me! Thx for the content
I prematurely moved a Lasius Neoniger coin into a mini hearth when they had 10 workers a year ago and they are thriving in it. I would recommend the mini Hearth for them but don’t move them in until they have around 25 workers.
Honestly cant stand tarheel they are expensive and you can make the same nests for a fraction of the cost yourself. Also cant stand the look of them, and all the imperfections.
@@denhambad That makes sense. The AC outworld is like $60, so if you combine the 2, Tar Heels wins. I currently have AC products, I will check out some other brands too
Tar Heel is kind of overpriced in my opinion .I could easily find something of a simolar design and quality from taobao for one third of the price. Shipping is also one twentieth of the shipping price of Tar Heel to southeast asia. I also think antscanada is way better in terms of cost as the shipping is only twenty dollars compared to the eighty dollars of tar heel. I also feel that you get much more for what you pay for as the ac nests are bigger for the cost. Will try tar heel when I have the money😀
@@elliotsmith102 i was thinking on perhaps milipedes or pillbugs? i know this has nothing to do with ants but do you know if a milipede might be happy in something like this with enough substrate?
Does ants Canada ship from Canada? I heard the guy does not live in Canada anymore and went back home to the Philippines? Anyone know order from them in the last couple years and know?
you aren't supposed to water the mini hearth you are supposed to fill the water tower 2/3rds of the way full it says that in tarheel ants videos personally i would have given the tarheel ants nest 53 out of 60
Your best nest is severely over-priced and very crude in its construction including materials. A natural tunnel from the outworld to the nest is preferable to a plastic tube which this has. The magnetic front is a problem waiting to happen and I would never trust it unless it was laying down. For the same price you can get a quality formicarium that will do much better.
Best overall is wakooshi, Tar heel ants is basically the only option if you're interested in honeypots, I've never heard of ants australia so I won't comment on them and ants canda is overpriced as heck
If you are in USA you can buy queens from tar heel ants just make sure the species is legal to ship in your state if not try waiting after rain fall to catch some queens after they mate. In general you will get good results from looking up queen ants for sale. I highly recommend finding your own queen because it is much cheaper than buying, if you do find/get a queen good luck with the colony 😁
Anst anatomy first hi! seccond.... I am going to try and make an ant channel soon starting when I get a new queen., and soooo do you have any tips on how to start??? THANKS -Warrior
I’m a new ant RU-vidr and I find it’s really stressful keeping up with an upload schedule. While your trying to find a queen I recommend creating a few videos so after your first upload you don’t have to worry about having to work on videos. This way you can start of with a decent upload schedule and while your uploading your pre made videos you can start making more videos. I haven’t uploaded in two months because I’m having trouble uploading my next video so try to keep up with your upload schedule. If you don’t you can loose touch with your subscribers and you probably won’t gain many new subscribers.
The thing that really got me into making videos was seeing other channels not getting any views and wondering why when their camera angles are trash and wobbly. I try to keep good camera angles as one of my main goals when I film. Start with that
