Hears someone he calls a friend was killed. Oh My God. Then seconds later starts making breakfast and asking if Columbo’s hungry. Then reveals that Oh yeah, the late friend Sometimes stayed with them. Then starts trying to split hairs over how well they knew each other. Nope, nothing suspicious about all of that behaviour at all, at all.
Here's another laugh: "I was his dentist, not his doctor" reminded me of the old joke: "What's worse than having your doctor tell you you have herpes?" "Having your dentist tell you you have herpes." Since I'm on a roll here, "You heard about the girl who kissed her canary and caught chirpes? Her doctor said it was untweetable."
Well Columbo is the same guy who cracked an egg against the murder weapon in the Leonard Nimoy episode years back so he wasn't the most careful when it came to handling evidence.
Personally, if I told someone that their pal was dead, and 20 seconds later they were discussing bagels and coffee with me, it Miiiiiiiiiiiiight make me think They’re the murderer.
1:25 the killer gets Columbo's suspicion by guessing correctly that it was car-related death. That's why @ 2:21 he began to probe by asking more direct questions. The suttle catch was when Columbo gives a double meaning comment toward's his alibi @ 3:11 "Very good...", that's when Columbo begins to play with his prey. A killer that show's no genuine emotion. That's why Columbo @ 4:32 humor's the killer that ins't taking the news of the victim seriously.
Regarding your first point, Columbo said the victim was found on Mulholland Drive. It's actually pretty reasonable to guess that someone found dead on such-and-such road died in a car accident.

While this is a dated episode I do like the see through Fridge. I would feel the need to have everything organized or color coded! The murder couldn’t have sounded more fake when he heard the news about his friend! Lol
Columbo shows the killer his tooth pain on the left side, but when sitting in the dentist chair, he is working on the right side. I watch an episode every night. thanks for sharing these.
@Gypsy Girl, Yes- that is so true about Columbo, gets a feel of who he suspects as being the perp, with 'small talk' , then -he finds more clues to support his inclinations, then he finds the bombshell evidence and presents it directly to the perp, and to his audience at home... The stroke of a genius...

The way he eats that bagel makes me want a bagel. He offers another but it looks like the top then bottom slices of 1 bagel. So actually he only had 1 full bagel. Lol.
I once went to a restaurant where bagels were on the menu. I ordered one. I got half a bagel; i.e., just one slice, the top one. I tipped the waitress properly, and never went there again. It became a story with me, when friends would talk about going there to eat. They closed down after one year. Cheap bastards got what they deserved.
So ... that guy just took the matches off of the victim, didn't put it in an evidence-bag, no dusting for prints... wasn't wearing gloves either. Just thought "Hey neat, I'll have those!" and helped himself.
He was guilty the moment he reacted and then non chalantly asks Columbo what he'd like to eat and drink in the kitchen as though nothing happened, that'd arouse suspicion right away I mean at least put on a believable act
I hate the corny, fake, show of shock, disbelief and sadness that the murderer displays when he hears that the person he killed is dead. Sometimes it is actually funny. It gets really ridiculous when they try to "help" Columbo solve the case. It is very entertaining.
So does Columbo. He is a very good judge of peoples reactions and sniffs a fake with intuitive accuracy. Occasionally he is wrong in a few episodes but mostly "it's something not quite right" and 'things don't add up". He is alerted by people who are too cool and who have all the answers and remember exact times of where they were as though they have rehearsed the whole scenario. His instincts and tenacity characterize his whole persona plus he throws in this act of disorganization and quirky behavior. However, his character is razor sharp for observation and his chess like moves to outwit the over confident, pretentious villains.
I thought I recognized that voice. It's James Read, the actor who played Victor Bennett on _The Charmef Ones._ Victor was the husband of Patty and the father of Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell. I hate the new series but I've watched the original episodes a zillion times.
Yes Salim. But I suspect the scene was scripted to end on a solemn note. But the spontaneity of Falk's 'bakery truck' and the dentist laughing was TOO good to cut. You can see that Falk just about stops himself from joining in. It would be interesting to hear what the actor James Read's (who played the murderous dentist) thoughts are on that scene, and what it was like to work with Falk's ad libs.

Columbo starts the segment standing right next to the metal cable tasked to pull the crumpled car from the canyon. These days the safety folks would have a cow if that happened. The”run over by a bakery truck” is a tried and true great joke. Columbo and the dentist pull it off masterfully!!
I remember that case well! Mr Wesley tried to get away with murder AND he tried to frame his wife. But what irritated me the most is the cocky bastard never paid me the winnings from my bet! That money would've paid to have my shirts dry cleaned! Swindler!

That first line - 'Excuse me, you got a match?' In the UK there is only one 'proper' response to this question, which is sadly on the decline due to the downturn in the amount of people smoking and using matches, which isn't sad. That brilliant response is 'Yes, My ar*e, your face'. lol

I use to watch columbo when it came out and now that it is on utube I really watch it a lot and now I am convinced just how Great PETER FAULK IS IN COLUMBO!

Cold in Los Angeles would be considered normal weather for anyone from England. I remember when a few relatives from England came on vacation to LA, and they got up one morning and the temperature was 50F and everyone in LA was wearing thick coats and sweaters, whereas they were just fine, as 50F is considerate perfectly normal in England
