@@jwrajones Microwaves would ruin pretty much any electronics, the heat isn't even the issue. You use a hole that is smaller than the wavelength of the microwaves and put the camera outside of the microwave, that way the microwaves cannot escape and harm the camera.

I think the "this side up" may refer to the fact the the flavour area is on that side. So when the popcorn begins to pop, it hits that area better. You should try a few the right side up and a few wrong side up with the exact same brand and see if the flavour is different
