@chrisadraheim
@chrisadraheim Месяц назад
@@hematite9914 I'm not just trying to dump on Marie, I think she's a fun, funny (hilarious, even) addition to the show, but she has a lot of the personality traits that, with non-fictional people in the real world, have reliably tipped me off early that someone was on the narcissist/sociopath spectrum. If I weren't comparing her to Todd, I made have used the term "narcissist" over "sociopath", but to me (and I'm definitely not a professional psychiatrist), the line between the two is fuzzy anyway. I similarly wouldn't know whether to characterize Todd as a sociopath or psychopath, but he's definitely got one of the "dark triad" personality traits. I also think this dynamic plays well into the show's themes of moral choice. Walt is an empathic personality who chooses to do evil things because he's poisoned by pride, bitterness, ego and a tempest of internal emotions. Marie is a sociopath (or narcissist) who is pretty content with her life so long as she can find opportunities to grandstand on a regular basis, so she winds up being more or less law-abiding. When she isn't law-abiding, her criminal ambitions are so modest that the main fallout is embarrassment to her family members who are more capable of experiencing shame. And it makes sense for the show's statements about moral choice to be targeted at more empathic personality types, since folks with the "dark triad" traits weren't going to take those messages to heart anyway.
@chrisadraheim
@chrisadraheim Месяц назад
@@winstonmarlowe5254 I don't see why not. It's not like sociopaths don't have people that important to them, and it's not like she doesn't have plenty of possible selfish motivations for looking after Hank. If pushed, I'd probably describe Marie as a narcissist over sociopath, and, of course, I'm not a professional psychologist who could formally diagnose somebody (even if I was, she's a fictional character). She has traits that I use in real life to determine early if someone probably falls into one of those categories, but I don't think I could make the distinction between which of those categories a person falls into. I sometimes say "sociopath" just because I do believe there's a missing empathy module there, and people don't inherently make that association with the term "narcissist".

As much as Skyler is usually right, I never understood the prisoner angle she had. She could literally leave at anytime😂
@kokkolintu3528
@kokkolintu3528 Месяц назад
But she's legally tied to Walter because they have kids. And the kids have legal right to have Walter in their life if they want to (which they do, because they don't know about his crimes) So to leave, she would have to leave her kids as well. (And probably change her name/go hiding and never contact any of them again, if she's afraid that some criminals are gonna go after her.)
@tomkapa
@tomkapa Месяц назад
@@kokkolintu3528 the kids are kids. Minors. They have zero say legally. If she got divorced (which she had the opportunity to do) and snitched on Walt she would have the kids and he would be gone. Even if she didn’t snitch on him most courts in the US grant main custody to the mother anyway for some reason.
@kokkolintu3528
@kokkolintu3528 Месяц назад
@@tomkapa Sure, IF she had snitched on Walt - but she didn't. And now she is involved in the crime as well, so she's stuck. Even if a court gives main custody to the mother, the father still has legal rights to see the kids and the kids have legal rights to see the dad.
@tomkapa
@tomkapa Месяц назад
@@kokkolintu3528 first of all my point still stands that Skyler screwed herself. She ruined her own chances to get away and even went out of her way to help Walt launder by choosing the car wash. Second, again, kids literally have zero say in parental rights. If the court decides Skyler has full custody then legally Walt is not allowed to see them unless she allows it and even then that would be breaking a visitation agreement which would get her in trouble.
