This is a testimonial about Lathrop Lybrook’s time trapped in the troubled teen industry. In 1998 and 1999, her parents signed her rights over to CEDU Family of Services. Since that time, CEDU has been shut down as a result of losing several lawsuits for battery, neglect, racketeering, invasion of privacy, and child abuse. None of the staff saw consequences for the abuse of the children in their care and many went onto continue working in the troubled teen industry including opening new schools.

Thankyou for sharing your story. I have a friend who was sent to CEDU in late 90s. She was horrifically traumatized. She had a lawyer and was involved in a group lawsuit but the stress was too much and she couldn’t continue. People need to break the silence so this will stop.

I got out in December of 1999 and only kept in touch with one person until 2004. Then I was in touch with no one until 2008 when I got on FaceBook. Now I’m in touch with a lot of people. Have you stayed in touch with anyone? I’m grateful for the connections I have. In a lot of ways they are the only people who truly get me. I recommend looking into the WWASP Survivor Group on FB. All people who went through the troubled teen industry are welcome there, and everyone is welcoming and understanding.

Hey Lathrop! I'm Pete. Ascent (escorted middle of the night) 2001 and Northwest Academy directly after. Almost ran away, left when i turned 18. I to jopin you in celebrating- finally- that all of these "programs" are finally closed. The owners were charged with over 40 felonies. Ascent is no more, and never will return. Northwest Academy is no more and will never return.

It's truly heartbreaking to hear such story..Especially knowing that there was noone to help you, that feeling that you are abandoned and there is no way out of such hell. I'm glad you survived and you keep being strong, it's all that matters. Your story can help others and hopefully all that school system will be changed. I myself had suffered a lot as well, from my own narcisisstic parents, I had lots of issues, borderline personality disorder, constant shame, guilt and self destruction in every aspect of life. I got through that with help of God, he literally healed my disorder without any medication needed and all the life heaviness, burden was lifted off from my shoulders. I really really wish you to be strong, be willing to fight for what is right, love yourself and know that your life definetely can change for better no matter what happened before, with all the love xx Be blessed

This sounds similar to my experience. It was much more strict where I was. I was not allowed to contact any person beside my parents, and that in two mandatory letters a week (which were screened) and one 10 minute phone call a week (also screened). If I said anything they didn’t like the letter would not go out or the call would be disconnected immediately, and I would be given “swats.” Swats were a beating with the wooden arm of a chair. I was directed to “grab my ankles” and if I didn’t four grown men would pin me down from both arms and legs. I was beaten black and blue and bloody more than once. I would have to stand at school. I could write a book on everything I went thru there. I was 14 when I was sent there and 18 when I left. I have nightmares 18 years later more than once a week.

Your points are all incredibly valuable to hear. I’d like to add some contrasted points so that people know the magnitude of how bad the situation was for us all, because different things could happen depending on the family and the kid. However, most TTI programs were objectively not flexible in individuation for any normal developmental needs a teen may have. I went to Cascade in 1986 WILLINGLY. I was not transported except for when I was taken to a mental hospital for teens to finish out the last 2 months of 8th grade. The 2 men that took me to the hospital and would not speak to me, were leaders in the cult I was raised in, and also parents of kids, one family, I was close with their daughter. The embarrassment and fear kept me quiet. The hospital set the tone for my parents to start pushing for me to be sent away, to their Guru, and offering it to me, making it sound like I would get personal attention and the arts to explore my talents or better areas that I flourished in. And I have been groomed all my life to think I had bad karma and that I was going to end up on the street if I didn’t learn to be good. I inherently agreed with my family that something was “wrong” with me. But I had already be subjected to being vetted by my parents regularly, my community, and as I acted out more and more it was used against me despite the fact that I was showing many signs of trauma, not just behavior. It was always assumed that children’s behavior was nature instead of nurtured (abuse can nurture a traumatized child) When I went to Cascade I was so excited to get away from my parents and abuse from the community of the cult I was raised in, I couldn’t recognize that that was where I was headed (a cult of its own nature: cascade, CEDU, and Rocky Mountain Academy all have social policing links and programming techniques linked to Synanon Cult) When I did my first Rap (3 hours of screaming abuse and crying, 3 times a week) forced labor at a “for profit” school, and my first Celebration (kept up all night and forced to talk about any sexual fanatics we had ever had, if we masturbated , it had been intimate with anyone (I was 14), and thru they night I watched mere CHILDREN get torn down, humiliated, shamed, forced to speak, and kept awake. We slept on the floor for a short period of time and food was both withheld but keeping a person up all night crying with yelling and forced ideologue (reading to us certain books, pointing at posters on the wall to contemplate, making sure we “KNEW” if we “failed” we would be sent to “Provo”.) This was just the 1st if 4 “Celebrations” I endured (ironically, the cult I came from had done a lot play and series of their own classes called something similar and this just added to my overall condition and fear but felt TOO familiar for me to panic in a way that was as self preserving as kids that had the will to run. Either way, and point being, these places had numerous WAYS any kid could become completely traumatized, but some of us were primed for it and some were so shocked and scared they ran. Some of them even adapted, and them adapting to that environment is a complex topic and it doesn’t necessarily mean it was GOOD. Anyway, I HOPE you see this. Your story is heartbreaking. My closest friend ran and she was sent to a place in Provo and I was also lucky to follow her. It ended up being like you said, “heaven” compared to cascade and it was not Provo Canyon school. More recently tho, I’ve become more aware of girls getting raped there, isolation for up to 2 weeks, that stand out to me now MORE. I am close with a person that went thru the worst of it and they are homeless and they drink to live. People have no idea how harmful it ALL was, because some people are too busy relying on an old narrative or ability to turn on other kids in a heavily socially policed environment. Knowing other kids would turn on me at any given moment was the hardest to swallow; I needed friends not little dictators or bosses. I got kicked out on purpose and endured one last horrific rap and was on band with the whole school for 2 weeks. I had a man talking to me and taking notes on our every conversation to send to my dad who gave me his FILE on me when I turned 30 for a “Birthday present”. Overall, they are all bad and harmed children, since I know of peers that suffered at Heritage in Provo as well, when it was easier for me to adapt there. Their abuse and harm matters to me, just as much as ever, my own.

They did raps at cascade? Because RMA was ALL about that..... I hated raps. I hated not being able to trust ANYBODY because the minute you did BAM! they betrayed you and restrictions and bans instantly..... lol.... I dont think I was EVER a "good student" at RMA....I tried....for 17 months but to have to write one more lame "dirt list" or writing assignment about 25 ways I hate myself....I had to get out of there....
