In my Mosaic group we use a dremel to cut the cups in half. Wonderful. Water helps with this too. New to your RU-vid channel. Love it. Such a professional. Blessed be.

Hi Peter, thanks for the you tube. I've not tried cutting a cup in that way. I usually score the inside of the cup with a pistol grip glass cutter and use running pliers to split it open. Of course it can be a bit of a miss sometimes, depending on the cup.

Good tip using rubber band to mark. I also like that you showed it can go wrong! 😊

Thankyou so much, that's good to hear, they can be a bit hit and miss occasionally depending on the make of the cup. :)

I eyeball where I want the cut to go and one snip and it breaks in half and have several now. I am calling it beginners luck
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
In some cases I tend to do wing it as well. That's great that you are able to get the cut where you want it to be, I do find it also comes down to the type of cup you are cutting just like stained glass. It may not be beginners luck. :)

Thanks for the tips and techniques! I never have cut the cups with my wheeled nipper because I was afraid I would dull the blades. Have you ever tried using a half cup in a mosaic in order for it to hold water for a small arrangement? It would probably not work or be too hard to clean, but just have wondered if there is a way to be successful in this. Thanks!
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
Thankyou and thankyou for watching. The crockery will blunt the nippers quicker but works very well. Yes l have cut cups in half and used them in mosaics, if you wanted to use water you would need to make sure the area is waterproof which you can do, people have done that but generally after a while people stop using them for flowers or plants. 😊

Hello-again!!! What type of glue do I need to use for broken plates or cups??? tk u K
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
Hi Kaye, I cant speak specifically about your job as there are variables I cannot see but generally I like to use a cement based adhesive (thinset). You need to make sure you use one rated for the tess you are using as there are different ones in the marketplace. The adhesive is very sticky so use a baggie this will give you complete control. :)

i would like to make a half mug or tea cup with a clear wall on the cut side to be a functional mug or tea cup and mimic the mad hatter cut tea cup on Alice in Wonderland. Would you mind giving me some tips on how to accomplish this? Do you have any ideas on what to use for the clear side and how to make a tight seal so the mug/cup is functional? i am planning an Alice in Wonderland theme tea party, and i would really like to make these to give to my guests as party gifts for attending.

Emily that’s a fairly involved project that would require a fair amount of testing and working out to see what is the best way and also what is food safe. Love the idea but it is something that would require some research and development before proceeding. 😊

Hi can the rest of the cup - the broken bits - be cut up to use in a mosaic?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 4 года назад
They sure can, you can use just about any part from a plate or cup including the brand on the bottom if its one you like, cup handles together will make hearts and the rims and other parts can make flowers or add texture to a mosaic, you're only limited by your imagination. :)

@@TreasuryRoad Hi Thank you. Any chance you could please do a video showing you cutting up/breaking/ nibbling a cup and demonstrating / suggesting where the different part of the surface of the cup can be used. Thanks

Peter, what do you use to glue the cup to the substrate? Do you do it before you add the tesserae ? This is for an indoor piece.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
I cant comment specifically about your job as there are many variables I cannot see. It depends on the project and the look, however in regards to the video above I adhere the cup first and then mosaic the background. I use a waterproof construction adhesive that comes in a tube or Apoxie Sculpt. :)
