➡️ It’s time for a good ol' prog rock SONG BREAKDOWN! Porcupine Tree are one of my favorite bands to exist, and I’d nearly forgotten about the magnificence of “Halo” from their album "Deadwing" released in 2005. Steven Wilson’s songwriting is simply exquisite - especially when paired with Gavin Harrison’s otherworldly drumming or Colin Edwin’s attention-grabbing grooves. In this video I break down the song’s main bass line (tabs / notation included) and discuss how the song’s slow-burn build stems from the bass line’s quirky ingredients. In this video, I highlight the massive amount of contrast in the song's layering, the clever songwriting techniques used in the chord progressions, the odd-meter bridge section in 17/16, why I think odd-time signatures can be unnecessary to care about, the deceptively-smooth presentation of Gavin’s drum grooves, how Richard Barbieri’s synths and samples are a perfect complement to Steven's vocals, my philosophy on progressive rock, and much more! 🤘🏼😇🤘🏼

Steven Wilson's solo stuff features the amazing Nick Beggs on bass and Chapman Stick. Well worth checking out.

Porcupine Tree had some insane bass lines with Colin. I really love Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled, it has that interlude that follows with the sample speech by the Heaven Gate's dude... Colin really makes me chill with that fretless lines.

Marshall Applewhite aka "Do." I love that song & it's so great live too. The basslines on Hatesong & the upright Russia On Ice are awesome too.

You're right about just "feeling" the music. I once did "Money" by Pink Floyd for karaoke. After I was done, the person running it told me how impressed with it they were. "It's not an easy time signature to do". "I grew up on this stuff. I just know it". Though sometimes I do like to try and figure out random ones on occasion. More of a test of my abilities than anything.

Probably the most well-known 7/4 song of all time. They had Chris Parry play the sax solo in 7/8. The bridge is 4/4 though I think. Feeling it is so crucial. As musicians or singers, if we can't feel it then how can others feel it?

I love your take on Gavin's musical drumming! I myself like to call him a musical surgeon! He does the most complex musical stuff I've ever heard and just make it sound so simple! It's the peak of creativity and it shows how he has mastered his own sense of drumming. It's the same as a poet saying a thousand words with a single line. Not many people are able to do that and Gavin has certainly proved himself continuously in whichever projects he has worked in! His playing is so melodic, his fills are just the right amount of notes, and everything else he does is always on the point! Loved this video, and keep more PT coming! ❤❤

I think that piano part works perfectly because you get kind of that vibe from Lazarus before and it's almost foreboding to Arriving Somewhere next.

Nate Navarro did a great job on the tour (before he had to bail and was replaced with a backing track), but he's not Colin.

I don't know if it makes for the most interesting video, but Steven Wilson's song "Luminol" is my absolute favorite bass line and is probably the reason I play bass today.

Regarding odd times, I just listened to an interview with Gavin the other day on "In My Drum Room", and he said, "I never ever count to 15." He said that he breaks it down into smaller pieces, but he also said something very much like what you said here. He said once he finds a pattern that he's happy with the bass drum and the back beat, then that becomes like a "melody" that holds the rest of it together. Or sometimes he's zeroed in on some other part of the track like a keyboard part or whatever, and that's his roadmap. It's a good interview. Worth a listen.

I saw a video where he said something similar. When he's experimenting and jamming and coming up with patterns or grooves, he has no idea what the time signature is. He just feels it. It isn't until after the fact that he counts it out and figures out what the time signature is.
@ColossusBall
@ColossusBall Месяц назад
I good example for your time signature discussion is Master of Puppets. Like does anything think they're counting 21/32? No way. It was a feel thing the whole time.

You must listen the music "Arriving somewhere but not here " from this album. Mikael from Opeth made the guitar solo. I recomend you listen Bleack from Opeth, this sond has vocal from Steve Wilson. The both are extreme talent, and have some amazing musics.

One of the unsung heroes of the Prog Rock genre is Jonas Reingold. He's ABSOLUTELY insane. He's one of the most melodic and diverse bass players I've ever heard. He's Chris Squire and Jaco in one, plus some. Karmakanic - Wheel of Life Kaipa - Angling Feelings Karmakanic - Do U Tango? Thanks for this one. Big PT fan here. Kudos for mentioning Gavin's drumming, even though your focus is on the BASS. I.m.h.o, Gavin's drumming should never go unnoticed or unmentioned. Check out 'Bonnie the Cat' from 'The Incident' album. Some truly spectecular Gavin/Colin unusualness going on there, as well as amazing vocal delivery by Steven. There is also a gorgeously _weird_ stop-motion video for that song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UI7RJkCXyq8.html
