How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

2 things: 1 - its cool to see how much attention to detail the three of you are placing on getting the planter set up just right. 2 - the slow drift time lapse of you VT-ing....absolutely amazing cinematography. Great shots.

That 46' just looks better and better every year. I think you guys might be onto something by leaving that as the designated planter tractor lol. Thanks for the video!
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 2 года назад
Seems if that is to be the "designated planter tractor", some adjustment of the wheel spacing would be in order as to not be planting in the wheel tracks.
@rtz549
@rtz549 2 года назад
@@dwightl5863 what options do they have for adjusting wheel spacing?
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 2 года назад
@@rtz549 The 4640 is a row-crop tractor. Meaning the spacing of the wheels, both front and rear, are adjustable so the wheels fit between the rows.
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 2 года назад
@G. Holman Being they seem to be critical of the seed depth and coverage, like they should be, having consistent soil firmness across the whole planter width rather than 66% of it (4 of 12 rows in the wheel tracks) it would be something to aim for. Not that difficult to accomplish. Then again if the wheel spacing has never been adjusted it would take some serious grunting to make it right. So maybe just good enough is good enough.

Just great to see the steps it takes to prepare and adjust everything for planting. In my point of view planting is one of the crucial moments in farming. Great drone footage and music!

@traderjoes8725

@G. Holman Yes, absolutely! Seeds are a high-end product and very expensive. Reseeding is an option when it comes to wheat or triticale if you have the right equipment. I think your bank account only allows one shot when it comes to soy beans or corn.

Awesome video, Easter weekend with my older brother, my older sister an their family’s was the topic of discussion about planting on what days dad started. An dad brought of some old hand written records of what days he started planting. Generally mid April or mid May. The seeds we used were not like the seeds of today. Even had a hand drawn map of the fields.

Down here in Arkansas (I work for the research farm at Arkansas State University) we aren't planting our earliest beans until next week. If we'd had the weather, we would have planted them before that. We have a cover crop test however that requires us to take biomass samples (basically all of the above ground plant material in a 1 meter square) until May 15th. As soon as its done we are going to plant right into it and then burn them down after we plant, because my boss has found its easier to plant into some of the tall, stemy material while its still green. And in order to hit our first cover crop planting date (part of the same test) this fall, we have to try and have the beans off before September 15th. It ain't gonna happen (especially since we have to cut all 200 cover crop plots individually with plot combines), but that's what's on paper. To add to that, my boss had our corn planted last spring (typically the farm is all beans one year and all corn the next) by April 5th.

We finished planting almost a month ago! But,,,, we are as far south as you are north. It’s super hard to get accurate plant population with your type of planter. I’m not knocking it! Those are good planters. But trust me,,,,, it’s well worth the investment to upgrade to a vac planter. They give you so much more flexibility and accuracy. And above all else a planter is the single most important piece of equipment any farmer owns. It will make you or break you. Travis, quit your whining! Those beans are the best source of nitrogen you have! 🤣 try planting peanuts and you’ll love beans!

Maybe a dumb question but if the ground is cold enough where you are upping the number of plants per acre to give them a better chance, why not just wait until the ground is warmer? Just worried you won't have enough time/good conditions to get everything planted and want to get an early start?

Don't watch the channel so I don't know who Travis is, but he is no asset to the operation. Good idea starting with beans in cold conditions just to check things out but cold temps and rain coming makes for tough conditions for planting. 115k population in 30" rows in this video is a recipe for disaster on a large scale. Row cleaners are definitely running too deep, in tilled ground they should only move clods and root balls...no soil. On your hills if you get a heavy rain the water will run down the trenches you are creating and wash away the soil and possibly the seed too.
