Kevy, this is exactly how I now do mine. I was looking for video ideas just now when I found this video. I have 12 boar brushes now and 3 mixed brushes (badger/boar) so 15 total with boar fibers. I have tried every way possible on RU-vid to break one in and have found the best results are found here in your process. Thanks Kevy!
I don't have the patience to work on a brush all week, but I've had good luck by simply soaking a boar brush, then loading it up with any shaving soap. I let the soapy brush sit for several hours, then rinse and then use it. While it does take a few shaves for the brush is further broken in, my method makes a perfectly usable, odor-free brush in short order.
I love breaking in a boar Brush with the fridge method. It's not far away from your method. Love the result. My favourite is the Omega 10049. Always great to use 😍
I did the lather it and then leave the lather then rinse it out method. So it was lather cheap shaving cream, leave lather in brush overnight rinse it out and let dry, repeat that process I also found lathering hair conditioner helped too. I've had my Omega brush for about 4 1/2 years and it barely requires soaking to be ready to use at this point
I did the fridge method with a Wilkinson sword brush. Lathered it up rinsed then brushed against a towel then put in a cup in the fridge overnight. The water in the cup turned orange as all the oils etc came out. Repeated for a few days and it was an excellent brush after that even though only $3 CAD
I'm doing the break-in of my SOC Boar and it was going well, and I started using it in shaves. Then yesterday it ate up everything, no lather was returned. It was a croap.
I use shampoo with conditioner where you was using bath soap. Lather it up 4 or 5 times. Let it dry for 12 hours or so. After that, I've got a puck of Williams Mug that I do 4 or 5 lathers to make sure the smell is gone then it goes to work. So far it's worked well and now I'm going to have to do it again after seeing that brush in use. Thanks Kevy.
I hand lather just the way you do, then I rinse, leave in the fridge in a cup of water for 24 hours. Then I squeeze water from bristles and rub it on a pair of denim jeans for roughly ten minutes. I repeat this over 5 to 7 days. Seems to work well for me 😁👌
Hey buddy !! In my opinion boar shaving brushes are like good wines, as they age they get a better flavor, boar brushes get better performance over time and last for years ..........
I completely agree with you, the best way to break in a brush is to use it. That said, this method you have is excellent plus you will have the added benefit of having the cleanest Left Hand in Scotland. :D
Nice tutorial Kevy... Thanks for sharing. Braking in my new Semogue Owners Club Boar at the moment. Take care , give Shona my regards. Stay safe mate;-)
Kevy👍👍 Being a natural hair, I treat as such. A good hair care product/shampoo plus the use of conditioner and a comb does the trick for me. Yeah, in the end, just using the brush will break it in. Good tutorial here, don't forget to use balm on your hand.... Enjoy!
Semogue 1305 boar brush, for me one of the best boar brush. Just start it in the right procedure, unless you'll irritate a lot. For me 48hrs in water without touching the wood handle, after that, one night out of water, one night in water never use hot water. After that 3 hrs. treathment, each half hour simulate a new lathering on hands... Do not use any hairbalm or other products. Great Semougue in 5 days you'll enjoy the best brush😘😘💥
Hello Kevy. Great shaving videos. If you like boar brushes, give a try to DANIDOM brushes (Endeavour or Endurance) and you will love them so much. They are steps forward from SEMOGUE, OMEGA or ZENITH. They don't need all this work before you use them to break the bristles in and they don't eat the cream at all. Extremely soft and pleasant.
Very impressed with the lather from that regular soap. Add some moisturizer to the mix and you might get a comfortable shave with that....could be a good video.
Nice one Kevy, I'm currently going thru the break in process with an Omega 10098. I've used a combination of both methods that u mentioned. First I cleaned the brush with hand soap and rinsed thoroughly before a 48 hour soak in the fridge. Secondly I hand lathered with a bar soap, similar to yourself each day after. This is day four so I think one more day will do it....altnough to be honest perhaps using the brush to shave with would have been more enjoyable. Cheers.
Hey Kevy ... yeap that's sort of a sensible tip : I' ll give it a go. In fact I heard of some other guy saying that he not only did the fridge trick but took it to another level : he used a hair conditioner ... Personally i think that's a bit over the top.
I ordered the semogue 2000 from Amazon today for £16 and post , I’m definitely doing it your way I have a 3d printed bowl and few soaps I’m allergic to using so I plan on using the to break my brush in for 5 days then I’m gonna soak it for 2 days on fridge then I’ll use the on the 8th day
My dad never used any expensive soap when he wet shaved. Whatever bar of soap existed was enough. Poor immigrant family mentality, use what you have and can afford to get by.
The reality is that this an initial break-In process as you say; it’s a start to get it to a comfortable level. After 3, 6 and 12 months of use it will feel noticeably softer at each stage and develop its own ‘character’ or characteristics if you prefer. I find some shed more hairs than others at certain stages, but maybe only a few at a time or occasionally, but no danger of going ‘bald’ that’s for sure. I do find that a soak of 30 minutes before shaving, or even overnight if first thing in the morning, helps to get them nice and soft for the lathering.
Nice method. I have an Omega, similar size and that POS will not soften......I have left it in the refrigerator, used contrast cold/hot water + towel rub too many times..., maybe water with vinegar next. I have come to the point that I hate the brush...... OK, I"ll try the Kevy : get rid of your fingerprints method.....
Old Semogue lather eaters. They are beautiful, but always hungry. I have much more luck with the humble Omega boars (smaller knots, not the "professional"), and Turkish Jaguar brushes (they are absolutely fantastic).
Ooh, I've been very tempted by boar brushes, I've only used synthetic up to now, might just take the plunge. Have you ever had a go at making yourself own soap? My wife made soap a few years back, fancy having a crack at making shaving soap, what couldn't possibly got wrong 😂
You should have a go at making the soap. It's actually good fun. I make some every now and then and while I'm sure it's not perfect, there's just something about using something you made yourself
@@tomo9224 cheers, I'm going to have a run at it I reckon. I picked up some of these from the range, seem like a perfect vessel for it, they were down to £1.60 www.therange.co.uk/cooking-and-dining/tableware-and-dinnerware/plates-and-bowls/bowls/barbican-stone-dipping-bowls/#326327
@@matthewsmith22 yeah absolutely start out using some stuff that's cost effective for you. I did the same. Soap making is a big rabbit hole as well, you can customise things so much with events and textures. Proper chemistry too, reminds me of science classes when I was younger
@@tomo9224 we have a lot of the basic stuff for regular bar soap already, scouring the Internet for appropriate essential oils, picked up some bay rum to get started with. A lot of recipes suggest bentonite clay (I have loads of the stuff, been using it in my koi pond for years) but I read somewhere that it dulls blades, do you have any experience within it?
Me and my wife hate going to Wal mart! I never seen a chain of department stores that spends so much time and money moving crap around after you know where everyday things are. They do it as a psychological game to make you buy more. I rather pay a little more and go to target. It's not as big and everything is in its general place. Idk if you have walmart or target stores in the UK.
