You guys are definitely correct that the method shown on most RU-vid channels is not terribly effective. However, there is a better way! I definitely recommend checking out my videos 753 (introducing the new/superior method) and 760 (testing the new method with beefier locks).

@raver377

@cringeyusername7459
@cringeyusername7459 5 лет назад
They're testing the technique shown in 100's of lifehack videos. Yes, the lockpickinglawyer's video shows the best way to do it, but that's not the point of this video. Also, even with the modified technique, bolt cutters are still very clearly the far superior and more reliable method if you're using brute force. You could probably even just use a hammer. This two wrench thing is a completely useless idea because in all honesty, what are the odds that you are going to end up in a situation where you have to bypass a padlock, and have no tools other than 2 wrenches? That's the point this video is trying to make, and this is why Brian was becoming increasingly frustrated with this ridiculous made for clicks idea that's been uploaded and rehashed by 100's of lifehack videos.
@mack-about
@mack-about 5 лет назад
I disagree - for example, apart from having a set of wrenches at my apartment, I also keep a few of them in the trunk of my car, but I don't have bolt cutters at all. Here's the link to the better method: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dBSSA5ot0tA.html
@ModernRogue
@ModernRogue 5 лет назад
Very well put. This was a groaner of a hack in our books, and it just seems like you should use bolt cutters. (And remember: we’re “legend testers”, not “testers of proven correct techniques.”)
@SloopLow
@SloopLow 5 лет назад
@@cringeyusername7459 No. They were clearly using the wrong sized wrenches. They even noticed that themselves but weren't sure if it would be better than carrying around the bolt cutters. The thing is, even two larger wrenches are easy to sneak around because you can manipulate/hide them separately and you cant take apart the bolt cutters. People don't seem to understand that this method isn't supposed to be better or easier than bolt cutters as far as actually breaking the lock, but just an easily accessible alternative that does work if you do it correctly.
@skyeturner5003
@skyeturner5003 5 лет назад
You can turn the wrenches 90° instead and pull up on the shackle and the mechanism securing the shackle which is weaker in almost all circumstances. So you put one wrench in like you already did, then the other wench is vertical instead and then it applies the force upwards on the shackle. As many people have mentioned this is the method demonstrated by lockpickinglawyer.

As you said at the top of the show, the right wrenches make all the difference. I've done this at home on locks with rusted shut cores and it is easy as pie, assuming you use the right wrenches. This admittedly did take about 10 min of trial and error. That still beat hauling a generator and angle grinder out to the storage shed.
@ModernRogue
@ModernRogue 5 лет назад
Yeah, I think our point was just that so many videos act like this is practical and easy, but if we're going to play the "well, obviously you need the right tool for the right job" game, then our non-controversial take is that the right tool is.... bolt cutters.

As many other have said, LockPickingLawyer has a good video explaining how a better way to open them is to have one horizontal and one vertical wrench. To sum up his video, what you're doing when you use the two wrenches as you were is you're applying all of the force against the outside casing, which is designed to be difficult to break. What you're doing with a vertical wrench is using the force to push upwards, which puts all of the force onto what is usually a small piece of malleable brass that keeps the shackle in place in the lock.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dBSSA5ot0tA.html

i used to do this regularly in the ict business, we would get big boxes full of computers with locks on them, if you get good at it it actually is faster than bolt cutters. the trick is big enough wrenches and maximizing leverage. always grab them at the end. you can also force the shackel up by putting one wrench sideways and one wrench above the other wrench. this will break most locking mechanisms

The pin locking the loop inside is easier to break. Instead, apply the force between the body of the lock, and the top of the loop with the wrenches. It will sheer off the "hook" inside the lock and open up with ease.
@jeroenvanbroekhoven7325
@jeroenvanbroekhoven7325 5 лет назад
@TheModernRogue It does work if you use bigger wrenches. They should barely fit in the lock when you start, then with a little bit of pressure the lock will pop open.
@Jack-rp7uh
@Jack-rp7uh 5 лет назад
Not only are you using the wrong sized wrenches and not putting the lock in a vice or secure place, youre also using the wrong method. Still a fun video and I always look forward to the next
@ModernRogue

Jesus christ. why would you buy 2 oversized wrenches and a vice, when you could get bolt cutters for half the price?
@Jack-rp7uh

@@ModernRogue haha, you're absolutely correct. Though I feel it's valid to bring up the fact that most people buy wrenches in big sets, instead of just individually

I had a lock on the back yard gate when I bought my house, and no key to it, (This was before I learned to pick.) so I tried this. Your results at about 5 minutes are exactly what I ended up with. I ended up replacing the latch because and throwing away the old latch with the lock still on it.

The lock picking lawyer's technique involves the wrenches being perpendicular. The bar of the lock is strong however the inner mechanism is rather weak, so by using wrenches in a vertical leverage technique you break the inside

Archimedes famously said that if he had a long enough lever, he could move the Earth... Granted, it would have to be like a light year long, but the math checks out!

Leave it to Modern Rogue to make a Masterlock look *difficult* to open when LockPickingLawyer could sneeze on camera and 5 different Masterlocks on his table would fall open in fear of being picked, bypassed, or raked open.

Yes, we agree. We are much more honest and authentic in our presentations. We make it a point of pride to show things as they happen and not edit ourselves to make us look like everything we do is awesome.

@@ModernRogue LOL, take the good natured ribbing for how it was given... I get there are a bunch of jerks on here being serious about this, but you had goofy fun with this, so why shouldn't we do the same in the comments? My sneeze joke should've been sufficient flagging as poking fun at the situation. Thanks for the fun vids, guys; really enjoy the martial arts ones and looking forward to see what you do with the compound.

I was told by an instructor that that’s the best way to break some fingers, as food for thought most times the hinges are the weakest point shock the hinge to either cause deformation, or they shear right off. Everyone puts fancy locks but never really puts heavy duty screws or hardware.
