Breaking more hard Granite without explosives

As part of a larger housing estate development project I had to bust out a large piece of hard Granite rock to make way for underground services. This is not difficult when you can blast it but on this occasion we were working near a live fiber optic cable and probably blasting was not a really good idea... Expando chemical cracking agent to the rescue again - drill, mix, pour, break.

Telstra/NBN cable/conduit, etc. is rare to be covered or surrounded by anything, some of the stuff even runs through the tree tops, tree roots, and on top of rocky ground fully exposed. Although it's quite tough it doesn't like to be bent at sharp angles.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
Yeah... such a high value asset often gets just buried unprotected in the ground, I have seen that as you say, crazy
@Michael-rg7mx
@Michael-rg7mx Год назад
The cable itself isn't the great value. It is all of the user's downtime. They put a machine on each end to send signals, then plug on splices. The one we cut was up in a day. The locator didn't mark it.
@RolandElliottFirstG

First of all, I just want to say that I really appreciate your channel, every one of your videos has been a pleasant, relaxing watch with an excellent sprinkle of humor and technical information which is just what my brain loves 😊 Cracking goo is fascinating to me and I'm curious how/why it expands outwards forcefully enough to crack the rock rather than just expanding upwards to ooze out of the open hole? It seems like expanding up would be the path of least resistance, so how does it exert any force at all on the sides of the hole?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
Good question, it first hardens and then continues to expand.

Hello Dave, another masterpiece. I always like seeing another guy my age run a sinker drill well. We now have new requirements for blasting near gas lines. Any blasting within 500 feet of any gas line requires a pre, and post blast survey by the gas company, plus independent monitoring from a gas company required third party vendor. Something smells fishy. Usually takes a month to get it all together.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
500 Feet!!!! oh... for goodness sake. Saddest part of the whole thing is that you end up forking out good money so other clowns can waste your time. Yeah... I had a bit of practice on these drills, I'm on air compressor #6 and this one has a lot of hours on it now.

9:45 Wouldn't it be more productive if you laid a mat on top of the rock, then the dirt? Wouldn't that make the rock easier to remove after the explosion, (minimal dirt mixed with rock?) And at 21:55, imagine in a few thousand years they'll be scratching their heads wondering how that was done.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
I have a heap of light weight blast mats, but I need to bring them to the job on a truck which costs money, the soil is already there and I can do much bigger shots than I would if I only used blast mats. The soil also gives a higher level of protection and cuts the noise down drastically where the mats do little for the noise. The blast noise brings complaints and spectators that I don't need. Another bonus of using soil is that I no longer spend my weekends repairing blast mats.

@mozismobile

Guessing that it's because silicosis is a cumulative exposure problem. But that's a risk factor - some people are unlucky and develop problems at low exposure, others can, as with a similar issue "smoke all their lives and live to 100". Dave seemingly doesn't want to rely on getting lucky. (guessing thatt's the old bold thing... there's old explosives users, and bold explosives users, but there's no old bold explosives users)
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
That old gas mask is the finest unit on the market, It has a organic vapors canister and a P3 particle filter canister. When you see the WHO dealing with Ebola cases, this is the mask they will be using every time. This unit exceeds the P3/N99 rating. It is actually very comfortable - I recon I could sleep in it.

A good question to which I'm not really sure of the answer. I would think that the hydraulic splitter wins here because its force is only acting for the depth of hole that is equal to the length of the wedges (450mm) and If I were to use holes only that deep for the chemical I would not expect as much action.

It does when you drill the holes close enough, deep enough and the right diameter. Thanks for watching Paul.

Sure is if you get a splash in your eye or dust in your lungs. I once used a glass jug to pour it in holes and it etched the surface of the glass!!!

Hello Dave, That cracking goo is awesome material!! The trench cleaned up perfectly! Any complaints from the house? That huge excavator jack-hammer probably did more shaking than your boom-booms!! You didn't show us the results of your orange tube!!?? Banana or straight? Great video - as always!! Thumbs up! Stay safe! Jim
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
The house was empty and owned by the developer, all good, no damage. The drill rod came out unscathed, glad about that as it was a new one.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast It's always the new ones that get stuck, or bent . . . Nice clean clear camera shots it appears to me at 720p. Even the hand held ones. Pretty smooth for an old guy that's hugged a drill for the last 40+ years.

I have used that technique many times Rex and I would have done the same here if they did not want to blast today.

Do you have a video demonstrating how the epando works? Like pouring in a PVC tube or maybe a coffee mug or old piece of pottery?

No, I have Two time lapse videos of it in rock though, here is one - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-04y4k8bJMns.htmlsi=OTk9KHQo6plnTZC2

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast Thanks Dave. The ancient Egyptians could have done with some of your equipment, especially this stuff. They got by pretty well with wooden stakes but google won't tell me what type of wood they used.

There is more than a few things that we are yet to learn about their methods.

@@demolitiondavedrillandblast I would honestly counter, that while the example given would have cracked an egg...I second Paul's sentiment...it was perfectly controlled. Nobody got hurt...well OK, one Magpie got a concussion, but he was able to fly away so no harm done. Rock needed to go = Rock Gone. 🙂

you need a license for the goo down there Dave, up here the excavating contractors do goo jobs! i don't see how that stuff works it seems to me with nothing holding it in the hole it'd just push up out of the hole and do nothing!
@demolitiondavedrillandblast
No license required, not classified as dangerous goods. The goo first hardens and then expands.
