The government is banning model aircraft with a proposed law by the FAA less than a year after that dude flew over Epsteins pedo island. It's not about aircraft safety it's about aerial journalism
Dude don't dream just do it! You can buy simpler fpv packages almost ready to go from places like readymaderc or getfpv. It all takes practice but with baby steps it's super fun and very safe.
Watching these makes me want to build something like this so badly but I know I could never afford it or stick with the project haha. Great work, this is incredibly impressive
Dear friend, I have exactly that airplane: Still use the original motor and ESC, just changed the prop but same size, just APC style. I Have been running with 3s battery and flies good. I bought some " Lithium 35A 21700 3100mah" cells and after watching yours videos im thinking in making 4s battery packs. However, im afraid to overload the ESC or the motor and burn one or both (cause i have done a lot in the past) !! So, do you think its safe with this setup to run 4s pack?! Thanks Best regards
I'd either change the motor or propeller. the Speed controller is fine, although you will either need a new propeller (the stock one is a 10x6 with 3s if I remember correctly, so I'd go for something like a 9x5 or similar on 4s) or you can get a motor with a lower KV rating (the stock one is 1050kv on 3s, I'd go for something like 850-900kv on 4s. have fun flying!
I don't know how I missed this one. It's awesome! 5:40 is amazing! Your skills have truly advanced over the years man. That was like 4 or 5 videos worth of content. I know that RU-vid favors longer videos these days, but too bad because now we have to wait way longer between your releases!
That was super helpful at the end. Is there an affordable way to use satellite coms for navigation? Also wondering about viability of using StarLink for controls and video streaming?
I'm only 3 minutes 28 seconds in and I'm loving the air-to-air in cinematic video you've done. You really stepped up your video skills. All right I'll keep watching
Thumbs down because what you are doing is illegal. It could have been legal with a bit more work but you chose the lazy way. Chose to make the FAA's job easier. Very selfish indeed. Great accomplishment nullified!
I blame this shit on DJI et. al. In the past, it took work and practice to fly RC aircraft (of any type). As a result, there wasn't all that much activity and it was pretty much ignored - i.e. not enough activity to make it worthwhile regulating. With the advent of things that took absolutely no skill (relatively speaking) to fly, every yahoo was putting stuff up in the air and not necessarily discretely. The threshold of activity was crossed and the authorities took notice that Something Must Be Done, and here we are.
If those batteries are 18650s the highest capacity right now is 3400 mha or 3.4ah. Love the video makes me feel bad I threw away my ranger. Had to save space to move. Do a capacity check with your charger.
If it wasn't for the loud "Music", your videos would be the best. I just have to constantly mute your videos and watch without sound. Just because you enjoy a repetitive porn-style music, doesn't mean other do too. Music is very subjective. The sooner you realize that, the more subs you'll start to have.
I'm definitely feeling these long range plane videos. I've got to make it out of Miami to find a good place to fly planes, they're so much funner than FPV drones in my opinion. Also, any worries of the Eff-Ey-Ey seeing you fly out of LOS? Best of luck, love the videos.
I’ve been watching your videos for quite a long time now. I love always really enjoyed what you do and your video style. You just seem like a cool dude. Congrats
So, if I were to want to build one of these long range planes, but make it solar, what would you suggest? What would be the rough pricetag with it? (Excluding the laptop but including everything else)
Would it be possible to autonomously fly your solar plane something like 50 miles (or more) on a long sunny day? (launch it, they drive to meet it at its location later in the day). That would also be a really cool video!
Hey man, congrats on the projects. I try to bring some of the same concepts to atmospheric research but often stumble on FAA regulations. Are you doing these projects outside the US (besides the mountain flights in Washington)? If you are in the US, could you shed some light on how to get the proper authorizations for long-range flights?
No airspeed sensor? and no video injection to mission planner with USB to AV device? it can be so simple. RFD900X can also do telemetry and control PPM. did a similar flight recently over water. Are you doing the full tecs tuning before these full auto flights?
I hope you’re close by- I gotta bring some toys over and get some “mix it up” footage- I actually still have a few of the old Horizon “combat modules” with the adapters for current planes. (I don’t know how to spell the evil scientist laugh...) they’re a ludicrous amount of screaming fun even without FPV stuff. I’m trying to figure out how to get the stabilized MAVIC head tracking camera into a plane...
Awesome yet again. You never cease to amaze me with all you do. And to think the FAA wants to shut down this type of innovation. So sad. Keep doing what you're doing. We love it !!!!
But what he is doing could be legal. That would make it so much better for those in the hobby. This video is incredible but it's just another bullet in the FAA's weapon.
I'm just going to say for an FAA spies. He had spotters set up all along the route with transmitters and radios to communicate and control if need be ..
12:45 Yeah, in theory that’s what each cell is at. But their internal resistance could be vastly different (should be checking this every so often to keep them matched), which means one cell could be at 2.5 or 3 while another is at 4. And I’m sure you realize the danger that presents.
Ranger 1600 is cheap, good all round plane. All the Bixlers are great to. For Auto pilot I always use the old school cyclops storm. Easy to set up and work well, no waypoint function tho, I believe the Cyclops Tornado has waypoint function.
You do such great videos, nice nice work. :-) I especially like the Mavic chase footage. I love quads, they're amazing, but my first and truest love will always be fixed wing. When you said how you love flying that Ranger in for landings, I was totally on the same page with you. Every time I brought my FPV planes in for touchdown, it felt just brilliant. Taking off, flying and landing in a fixed wing is... just right. :-) I really like that plane, btw. If I was just starting out with RC and FPV, I'd definitely start with one of those. Not sure how I feel about plastic parts because I learned on and did my whole reign of terror on foamies, but still. NICE plane. BTW I've taken to studying your videos as a how-to guide. It's not like I couldn't just pick up where I left off and build myself a custom FPV flyer like no big deal, but you're really truly _good_ at this. Anyone can learn quite a lot from how you do things. BTW, don't you need some solars on top of that wing? ;-)
I always wondered, having flown only quadcopter for freestyle, no long range, just a few hundreds of meters maximum maybe, how much such a setup cost (not including laptop of course, but like... plane + components inside + dargonlink or similar + ground fpv station - antenna, screen) ?
Excellent! Need to figure out what that setup limit is. Gtrick90 (rcg) used a z84 (840mm wing) with 4s-7000 Li-Ion 18650 pack did 100 mile round trip in 4 hours over the ocean. This website shows a guy doing 184 mile (292KM) round trip fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?20039-Personal-Bests-V5-(LEADERBOARDS)&
15:05 Now *that* is an outro! None of this, "Please like, comment, share, subscribe, follow me on facebook, instagram, twitter, myspace, buy my merchandise and here's 10 minutes of paid promotions." Awesome views BTW, those frosty mornings look breathtaking.
In many countries this would be illegal, flying FPV out of line of sight... let alone autonomous flight without being able to directly control the RC plane.
11:24 The rock on the ground in the background kinda looks like a skull as the camera sweeps past it. I'm sure if you actually held the camera still on it and brought it into focus, it wouldn't look like that anymore. It's one of those "face on mars" kinda illusions.
Cool stuff Daniel. Just a couple of things that worry me a little. You should have a spotter next to you whenever you're flying FPV with two things in the air and probably not flying it over built up area. If I were closer, I would love to help you and be your spotter. The other thing is your plane with return to home when flying over the clouds sound ok but if a plane/heli comes near it, you can't visually see the plane to make corrections to avoid a plane/heli. The second part in the video seems a lot safer, much more open area.
Add some solar panels like those Canadians did and you should be able to autonomously fly it back to Utah. I sure wish you would take off from the ground, Yknow, for realism.
9:37 "simar to how my autonomous boats are set up" aka you lost telem and vid and let it continue without line of sight. But didn't want to tell us about your rule breaking. ;-)
Nice. Going back to level up on old challenges. loving the progression. Please do more of that diagram explaination of your setups. so cool to see you break it all down in a realtively simple visual way !
I wish I could accompany you while you setup all that equipment and during the flight. I can just watch all of it without saying a word. Such a wonderful hobby. I have always wished to do the same. Maybe I will sometime in future. 😇
Well the autopilot system is onboard but the telemetry that you're receiving may be interrupted. I'm doubtful that the telemetry is a transmission controlled protocol so you would get holes in your data.
Rob Pruitt Millennial “music” sucks so badly it’s not even music. It’s just a mish mash of sonic garbage thrown together over a boring beat with the irritating distorted voice like sound shrieking out a piss poor “melody”. I absolutely loathe this kind of sonic tripe.
Please don't refer to people as millenials or boomers or Gen Z-ers. People are people. And maybe if you took some time to get to know them instead of judging them, you might feel differently.
Very Inspiring stuff. Would anyone recommend me any beginner DIY FPV plane projects? I've got the Make: Electronics 2nd Edition book but haven't gotten around to finishing all the projects there.
Cool video,! But I have a few questions, since I can;t get the telemetry to add up. The close up of the computer when it got before it got back showed 2251 seconds elapsed time, 38 minutes, but you mentioned an hour flight time? Also, it showed about 2 to 2.2 A current draw while flying, and 3520 mAh used over 2251 seconds, which would be a 5.6 A draw, not 2 A?
In the self-piloting mode, with a preloaded onboard 3d reference map with suggested flight paths, used for accurate navigation, mission fulfillment when out of range? Enough AI to sort out the labeling? I saw communication product that was long-range direct radio connections and capable to establish networks to extend reach. Fly a squad. one or two within a squad of multipurposed drones? Even a land-sea-air mix? Together updating the 3D map in real time? Useful in search and rescues, real time forest fire, and other calamities, assessments, even with little or no cell coverage, particularly when used out of line of sight.
I notices warnings from gyro and magnetic compass... looks sketchy to fly far with such issues. I got my ArduPilot controlled WingDragon aborting mission and returning home several times due to local GPS failure. Thanks to AHRS and IAS sensors.
Oohh mannn this was AWESOME!! I love these kinda videos, close shots in the air. Just awesome watching something flyyy!!! So you have 4 batteries 1 stick in series correct? In parallel with 2 more 4s series packs??! Thanks!
Can anyone fly 5-mile autonomous flights, or do we need to receive a waiver from the FAA? Are we limited to 1199 feet AGL? Where do I sign up for this? Is it just Oregon, or can we do this just outside of Dallas/Ft Worth area too? There was a guy doing this in SF Bay area, but haven't seen any post from him recently.
So in theory you had enough battery power to accomplish an Autonomous Out And Back flight from Mt Vista & Clearstone Orchard to the town of Mattawa and Back Again or about 30 Miles as the crow fly's with a little juice left to spare...COOL!
Bad AHRS with full GPS lock. I would check your logs. Redo your IMU calibrations. If you are using a compass maybe disable it or redo calibration. You really do not want to see that when flying with good GPS lock on long autonomous missions.
You are the reason we get a bad reputation in the hobby, flying above the 400 feet limit and NO- VLOS, you are flying above the clouds at some point in your video. if a full scale plane collides with your plane you will be on the news. I'm sure the FAA is looking at your videos....
I saw your video and find interesting .One can sit and monitor his farm , very large property 30-100 acres. Also can monitor traffic ,search and rescue .Also nice hobby to watch beautiful land scape ,mountains . One question I have is ,a drone will fly more distance or airplace.I think airplace will glide and use less energy. Airplace is more efficient my guss.
I find it incredible that you have posted, and thereby encourage, such dangerous and illegal activity. You are a poster child of why the FAA and aviation authorities worldwide find themselves forced to advance further burdensome regulation on this hobby. I enjoy R/C flying as well, but understand why there are regulations on the hobby and work to always abide by them. As a general aviation pilot within the United States, and also an airline pilot flying the Boeing 777 worldwide, I can assure you that this illegal activity is costing lots of money and eroding safety margins within the air transportation system. Just last December, while on arrival to Osaka, Japan, we were informed that the airport had just been closed due to unauthorized, illegal drone activity within the airport air traffic area. We, along with many, many other commercial jets, had to hold for almost an hour while the authorities tried to locate and stop the activity. In our case we used up all of our reserve fuel and had to divert to another airport (for us, Nagoya). Several other aircraft also required diversions. We finally arrived in Osaka nearly 4 hours late, after refueling in Nagoya and meeting the unplanned customs requirements in Nagoya. Of course the late arrivals had a ripple effect that probably took days to recover from. I'm sure the costs to all those involved went way over a million dollars. Our company dispatch informed us that this same thing had happened less than a week earlier at the same airport. Please, please respect the laws and restrictions on UAV flying. How would you feel if your actions were responsible for the crash of a small plane, or worse, a jet airliner? And just to make a video???
Parking right beside the vault toilet beside Burkett lake? Nice and isolated; a bush would suffice if the curry was too laxative. I'm half way around the globe and still have no problem finding exact spots from limited information. Beautiful flight all the same.
Hi dude. What esc did you use and maybe you can show us how you built the battery packs. I'm so confused how mapping drones still use lipo and get like 30 to 40 min flight time. Why don't they move to li ion? Cheers,
Food for thought, or food for another project. A 5.8 repeater plane, For flying 5.8 over and around obstacles like saddle mountain or even over the horizon. Two planes, one flying autonomously that sends and receives signals bi-directionaly from your controller thence to the autonomous plane thence to the aircraft you are actually controlling which is receiving Control commands from the autonomous playing. At the same time the control plane is sending back to the repeater plane an fpv feed that ultimately get sent back to you for your flying enjoyment. I hope you were able to follow that. I know it's cumbersome and rather pointless with the lower frequencies available but it would be a good proof-of-concept or stepping stone for over the horizon flying. You do have all those milliamp hours to use now......
