Breaking New Land With Old Smokey2 

Last time I saw a root rake was about 1966 or 67 when we farmed north of Dawson Creek. Watching your video’s brings back lots of memories. Thank you

I can remember helping my folks "picking roots" from newly broken land. The more that was picked, the less that went into the baler or the combine later.

October, 2022 , hired a contractor with large excavator , thumb on the bucket , to break 2 acres , mostly Manitoba maple , a few polars , burnt the 3 piles after 1 year... he had a root bucket cleared most of the bigger roots. Tilled ground with dad's okd MM oneway disc ... thought it a good idea to hand pick branches and roots.... that ends of being a lot more time consuming and character building than I anticipated !!

Them discs are the way to go for sure for breaking. Thinking of getting a guy in with a rotary rake on my breaking we disced up last year. Got to go see what kind of job it’s doing.

You need a 3 point hitch root rake for your little case IH tractor

I’ve used a old harrow bar for windrowing sticks before. Worked good. Just came along with the skid steer and piled them up after or pushed the pile into the bush if that was a option.

Looks Good....Thought would have seeded it before now... and could have got it with a lighter disc??... I have been using a lighter Kello-Bilt 225 pulled by a JD 650 on winter brushing and have to doze out some stumps and jump over much wood and tree roots as I go...

Surprised you've only got an inch of rain up there. It's been raining so much down here in Edmonton lately. Hopefully you get just enough for a good crop this year.

Looks like you need manual labour for the roots. But the better job you do saves your combine.

Do you use the crab steer very much on your smokies? Or is it always crab steer? I was thinking the steering was different on those, compared to other 4WD's.

You should seed roundup canola on it first to clean it up, I bet you'd have a huge crop especially on breaking

Get those injectors set properly and valve set to stop the smoke

try adding a diesel additive. It makes a huge difference to my 4490. You notice right away if its not treated she starts belching black

breaking new land is pretty rare! I remember when you where dozing the brush, glad to see you're able to make things work for you! I just got my first went to 110hp from 80hp but this has a cab, etc. My granddad homesteaded in northern Mt, not too far from the canadian line. Use a hydraulic tine harrows it gathers it pretty good windrow it up and push it in apile and burn it did that for years works pretty good

Could u use 3 pt hitch 18ft or so cullitivators drag sticks to edge of field.lift cultivators drop out sticks. Or sticks too short.

Some of that looks a little low lying land. It may be good for a dugout.

Have you ever tried running a one way? I haven’t seen on in years, but it might help level it out. That was the first implement my dad started me on. I was 10 and he road a round or two with me them stepped off and said, “I’ll see you at 5:00.”

Might have to cut it a couple different directions to get it to level out
