Cat 6 modules often have thicker tracks and pins with better separation in order to reduce insertion & return loss. Fluke testing Cat 6 cable with 5e modules will result in a fail due to excessive NEXT (near-end crosstalk) & insertion loss.
@DC101-i8q
@DC101-i8q 6 лет назад
That to me is fairly interesting, Cisco never mention it in any of there certification courses! That's some extra cost, so not only do you need the cable but the termination port to go with that cable. I'm a Cisco man myself, and to be honest, unless your a data centre is there really need for 100mb locally? Maybe a 1GB uplink, but locally, 6/7cat cable, Cat5e to me is fine. Unless you know it's gonna be transferring serious data constantly.

I think it’s amazing how Channels like toms work , ok fair enough he has a good personality and knows his stuff but if you were to see a channel of an accountant or store manager on RU-vid I don’t think it would consistently get views and likes. Toms video are a real advertisement to young people out there that you can make a good living and be interested by your work everyday with a trade , I’m one of the only people in my school year who got myself an apprenticeship and everyone else went to college but it’s amazing the amount of people who college doesn’t suit there just brainwashed by parents and teachers that they have to go to college to make money which is a joke if you ask me. Thanks Tom for showing the very few people like myself that a trade is just as good as any college course and keep up the great videos👍

Entered! I'd always thought the difference with the jacks would be due to CAT6 being slightly higher guage but not sure how much this is actually the case. The main difference comes in if you are working with shielded cable and need to use the shielded jacks. Camera wise it may be worth looking at some of the mirrorless ones, still excellent DSLR level video quality with interchangeable lenses but a bit smaller. I really like my Sony A6000 although you'd probably want to look at their higher end models to get an external mic input.

Entered. If its CAT6 only then CAT5e connectors should suffice (albeit its a tad but thicker). If its CAT6a then its recommended to get CAT6 connectors where possible as the thickness is fairly big as the punchdown may be compromised. As Cameron said, there is a difference in based on wire gauge sizes. Its also the reason why the CAT6 connectors have a slight up-down wire feed rather than a traditional straight CAT5e and also to reduce interference. Where possible structured cabling (ethernet, coax, AV, etc. in a mini comms cabinet) along with new electrical cable should be done when refurbishing to have scalability and have better WiFi coverage such as celing mounted access points, flush mounted speakers, CCTV. The cost of structured cabling isn't that much and should be run in tandem when wiring the house.

Cat 6 cable uses a larger size of copper wire hence the staggered ends. The box terminations should be slightly wider to accommodate the larger size as well. I'm not sure if there is any other difference other than supply and demand. The Cat 6 spec vs Cat 5 is just the larger size cable with more twist in the pairs and more strigent test requirements.
@timballam3675
@timballam3675 6 лет назад
If you are using a shielded cable ONE end must be terminated with a shielded socket so the shielding can be grounded. If you use Cat5(e) sockets or patch panels on 6 or 7 cable the IDC will cut deeply into the copper increasing the risk of joint failure during assembly.
@chrisb4009
@chrisb4009 6 лет назад
In my experience you can use Cat 5e fittings on larger Cat 6 cores but if you fit Cat 6 fittings to Cat 5e cable it doesn’t always connect properly.

Cat 5e and cat 6 will BOTH handle up to 1000 megabit Ethernet. Cat 6 is “in case” anyone in future wants “something better’ and is something you only need fit if is specifically requested and that’s super-unlikely in a domestic setting. Very few pcs indeed even have or need a 1000 megabit Ethernet interface. Domestic internet connections are fast at 10 mbps and super fast at 100, so 1000 gbps is wildly overkill (cat 5e can do this properly) anything over this is not yet available. Only use cat 6 if specifically requested or money is no object. 3:41 “router” pronounced rooter in the UK! A router (pronounced r-out-er), is a rotary wood cutting machine used by woodworkers. Great vids.

Cat 6 supports upto 10Gb but 5e only goes upto 1Gb Ethernet. Provides some future proofing I suppose. GoPro quality is really good. Put the 2K into a holiday fund
@boomliam9289
@boomliam9289 6 лет назад
Yeah, but the actual physical plate and plugs are no difference. 8 Copper wires gets crimped down onto some copper plates in both Cat5e and Cat6 rated faceplates. Is it just what they're rated for? (but both 'work' interchangeably?)
@Jako1987
@Jako1987 6 лет назад
Yes both are physically the same. Technically cat6 plugs should handle more interferences (so they can put cat6 logo on it). I would go cat6 cables and cat5 plugs (if they are much cheaper) because you can change the plug but not the cable if there is problems with speed in the future.
@Monkeh616
@Monkeh616 6 лет назад
5e will do at least 2.5Gbps up to 10Gbps, depending on length, if you use appropriate NICs.
@Monkeh616
@Monkeh616 6 лет назад
6 is usually thicker wire, there are also crosstalk specifications which 5e jacks may or may not meet. They're not necessarily interchangeable (although very rarely is the difference critical).
@markb4071
@markb4071 6 лет назад
5e will support 10Gbe, but shorter lengths CAT6 will provide lower crosstalk, a higher signal-to-noise ratio. for the majority of home installs, 5e is still overkill ;)

@nystemy
@nystemy 6 лет назад
Yes, an actual RJ45 has a notch on it. (Reason being that the keyed and non keyed version have different applications and should therefor not be able to be plugged into each other.) I sometimes wonder if a 12P12C connector with two more twisted pairs would become practical in the future, since it would easily give an extra 50% high bandwidth over current cables, without much extra work....
