Instead of honing in on only issues that were mutually important, he diverted over trade issues China had with Australia. Talking down and threatening china is not helpful full stop. USA does not have the power or position or leverage to talk down to China from a position of strength. Second. This "making china stop selling dual use goods to Russia" just means USA doesn't want China to do normal trade with Russia, and wants China to take it's side in an economic war which is intended to crush and destroy Russia completely. A direct neighbour of China with which is shares a 4-5000km border, and which is critical for China to help China maintain regional security, like in central Asia with the various "Stan" countries, and with Korea, Japan, etc etc. Do you think dropping some tariffs which are illegal to begin with and offering to buy a few more Chinese products is enough carrot for China to make an enemy of Russia and help China destroy Russia and become a us puppet state? To have more us bases surrounding it, fo have a hostile Russian state to the north which is a us puppet? Please. China is not dumb nor that desperate. Even if Taiwan was offered, it would still not be taken. Maybe if usa left Korea, let Taiwan unify, left Japan and Philippines, China might think about helping put more pressure on Russia to end the Ukraine war(but not making an enemy of Russia by using force). China will just comply with UN resolutions and international law. That's all. Everything else is not for USA to unilaterally decide and are illegal unilateral actions to begin with so offering to remove them mean nothing and are illegitimate acts of hostility to begin with. It's like a robber acting like he will give back half of the stuff he stole from you in return for you not calling the cops and pressing charges as a 'carrot'. This whole Chinese overcapacity issue that Blinken (and Yellen) have argued is a red herring. What they really are doing is putting up trade barriers in the form of protectionist tariffs of up to 100% for products such as EVs, not due to “overcapacity”, but due to Chinese companies making better cars at a lower price than US auto companies can do. Reducing competitive threat to our industrial base and protecting Ford and GM comes at the cost to American consumers having less choice and forced to select from a variety of inferior products at higher prices.

I don't like to be in Biden's place. The US is still stuck in the good old 1970's when car manufacturing was at its peak. Americans liked American cars, and the world in general are in awe of US car industry. Jobs were so plentiful that a person could figuratively walk into a car factory and get a job. in 2024, it is the opposite. US cars are still desirable...by Americans and people in the American continent. Outside of it, consumers are painfully aware of the rising petrol prices, and environmental causes. They are moving in the opposite direction of American car industry, to buying smaller and even god forbidden, EV !! US Auto workers are losing jobs, and are in far of losing jobs. So Auto Unions are pilling on the pressure on politicians to ensure that they are making decisions to keep their jobs. That is why Joe Biden spent a lot of time mumbling to a crowd of auto workers, reassuring them that their jobs would be safe under him. He desperately wants their votes. Sanctions are but a sign that US politicians are at their wit's end. They are running out of ideas to change the course of the global events. Sanctions may buy the US some time to catch up. If they are the only policies politicians can conjure up, then US industries would forever be making up sanctions on imports because there is no tangible policies and strategies behind the sanctions.

Somehow Blinken and Yellen are the best unelected bureaucrats we can come up with.
