We are having the perfect start to the season and on track to have a really good one....It's just a shame the payouts not looking good to go with it
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

I remember one good spring years ago(with a lower payout season) it got very time-consuming to milk once a day (mix of jersey & smaller friesian). Milked the cows twice a day for a few weeks across the peak before putting the cows back on once a day.

They are trying to phase out dry cow over here in Ireland, you have to get a vet to prescribe it for any of them that they feel need it luckily our vet has agreed to give us some for anyone who has had a cell count of over 150,000 , but some vets are only giving it to any who have a problem on their last milk recording. More red tape and expense. The price we are getting for our milk is shocking at the moment and doesn’t look like it will improve any time soon either.
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer Год назад
It’s pretty much the same here, most people use it going off the last herd test but blanket dry cow is getting banned this season I’m pretty sure. I’m feelin ya, it’s not much better here either. I’m sure itll come right at some point but doesn’t look like it’ll be any time soon 😢🤷

I have a difficult time with our seasons just opposite. Did you have any problems with that when in the USA? A good cow with good milk numbers is worth the giving another calf. The cows are so much easier to handle when they know your voices and actions when sorting. What you are showing the kids is what more needs to be done. The kids of the World NEED to learn where their food comes from. Tp many think their food comes from the grocery stores. Thanks Andrew!! I have learned something every year I have watched your videos.

Have you still got the old supplier number by your house? I see it's still there on google maps and shows up on our truck in cab maps, I've never been to that shed but my dad has probably been there hundreds of times over the last 30 years.

@SerEnmei
@SerEnmei Год назад
@@TheOnceADayFarmer If you take the 7 off your suppler number that, that is the supply number your father had under Anchor so 3684 is the old Anchor number for the shed next to your place, 3683 the one further down the road, not sure about before the Anchor days. I was just thinking that when my family first moved down to Te Awamutu 30 years ago I think we used to live on one of your relatives farms on Macky Access Road which has been an OCD farm for some time now, I'm pretty sure it was owned by one of the Macky family.

@JohanneSchmidt-tl4op
@JohanneSchmidt-tl4op 2 месяца назад
I have a Jersey cow, and I always believed in milking at least 2x, but she's battled ketosis twice in this lactation, I finally elected to start milking her once a day, she's a whole different cow, must be something to it I think, besides labor and energy savings.
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer 2 месяца назад
@@JohanneSchmidt-tl4op its a lot easier on the cow only getting milked once a day. they can handle it unless your a really high input system but suits us. That's good to hear though!

@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer Год назад
Nah we don't, and I don't really know to much about them but From what I can gather they can also have there flaws at times, We supply 95% of our milk products offshore so I don't know if it would help or not, and Fonterra is a farmer owned co-op and all the farmers want as much as they can get but we do have to ride the highs and lows

But I wonder if you all are like us here in America. We've forgotten that Jesus died on a cross for our sins and if we believe on Him, our sins will be forgiven and we can live forever in paradise.
