A long time ago, in the middle of a dense forest, there stood a very tall banana tree. This tree was full of ripe, sweet bananas, tempting all the monkeys in the forest. However, whenever any monkey tried to climb the tree to get the bananas, humans would catch the monkey and beat it badly. Slowly, the fear of this punishment settled in every monkey's heart.
The monkeys soon realized that going near the banana tree was dangerous. Eventually, it became such that even if any monkey tried to approach the tree, the other monkeys would gang up and beat it to stop it from getting into trouble. Over time, this became an unspoken rule: "Any monkey who tries to go near the banana tree will be beaten by the other monkeys."
Generations passed, and this tradition continued. The newer generations of monkeys followed this rule without questioning it. They didn’t know why, but whenever any monkey tried to approach the banana tree, the others would beat it up. The rule became a part of their life, passed down from one generation to the next.
But then, something changed. The humans who used to beat the monkeys had moved away from the nearby village, and they didn’t come to the forest anymore. No one was around to punish the monkeys. But the monkeys? They still followed the old rule, unaware that the danger was long gone.
One day, a clever young monkey named Sheru began to wonder, “Why can’t we eat the bananas? Will we really get beaten if we try?” He asked the elder monkeys, but none of them could give him a clear answer. All they said was, “It’s the rule. Don’t break it.”
Sheru wasn’t satisfied. He decided to find out for himself. One night, he made a plan to secretly go near the banana tree. As soon as he approached the tree, the other monkeys noticed and started running toward him, ready to beat him. But Sheru was fast. He quickly climbed to the top of the tree and grabbed a big, sweet banana.
The monkeys below were shouting, trying to stop him. But nothing happened to Sheru. No humans came. No one beat him. Sheru came down, ate the banana in front of the crowd of monkeys, and said, “Look! I wasn’t beaten. It was just a pointless tradition we’ve been following for no reason.”
The other monkeys were shocked. Some of them also tried climbing the tree, and they too ate the bananas without any danger. Slowly, they all realized that for years they had been stopping themselves from eating the bananas because of an old, meaningless fear.
The monkeys celebrated this discovery. From that day on, any monkey could climb the banana tree and enjoy the sweet bananas. Everyone praised Sheru for his courage and wisdom. This story teaches us that we shouldn’t blindly follow traditions without questioning them. Sometimes, we need to face our fears and find the truth ourselves.
And so, a new rule was made among the monkeys: “Be brave, ask questions, and face your fears.”
