"Architecture is not about math or zoning - it's about visceral emotions"
Sohail Hashmi explores the history of Islamic Architecture and the myths related to it through this talk. Sohail Hashmi, a Historian, an Academician and filmmaker, is well-known for the immersive heritage walks that he conducts around the capital.
Dressed in a refreshingly crisp Khadi shirt, he carries the air of Old Delhi with him.
Besides being a historian, Hashmi is a memory keeper- a narration of his lived experiences would leave you craving for more.
Reflecting and disseminating his experiences, which his eyes witnessed during his heritage visits with his father, he personifies the rich heritage culture of Delhi through his words and reflects it through his vision. He is a “Delhiite” in a true sense. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

arabic is regarded as Islamic language even though Arabic existed before prophet Muhammad because Arabic was taken to a new height and had a particular slant due to Muslim needs like the way Quran was recited and how the grammar was used to derive laws etc. Hence it is called Islamic . The speaker wears clothes called Islamic even though clothes existed before Muhammad because his clothes follow Islamic ideals like beautification and self dignity. These principles of clothing are in the Quran. In this regards dome , pointed arch, pencil minarets etc become Islamic because these were developed to serve need specifically for Muslim. Can the lecturer deal with this please

what lecturer likes convey is after Prophet mohammed there is no specific changes in architectural level that means no contribution by specialised arabic community that is muslim after Mohammed PBUH

Agree with Mr Sohail about first muslim mosque built with mud and date trees but that was for purpose to educate Muslims to make place of worship simple as possible but we all know how people forget teachings with time. First 100 years of islam just spread rapidly from East to west and Asia after that once things settled muslim s started to built building with the ideas coming from converts from budism Christians and Jews so Islamic Era architecture started . Its blended the all predecessors knwledge of architecture into its own kind, when Centre of Muslims moved from Mecca to Damascus its leaped into next step please check Damascus mother built during caliph walid. speaker mention dome and minerat but forget to mention art of writing text , geometrical shapes you or patterns you see built during the era you can see same style from spain to Indonesia. ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE is a symbol its evolved during the age of Muslims renaissance. Gothic architecture taken so much from Islamic architecture. No one can say either dome or minaret belongs to any particular religion but now mostly used by Muslims i can say its evolving with time. Blue tiles arabic text written in a unique way , geometrical design. From Damascus mosque , taj mahal to tombs or mosques to central Asia all good know examples of Islamic architecture developed during the peak of Islamic renaissance.

true to a certain extent, there is however islamic principles that shaped the values of islamic architecture i.e living. In which that carries the term islamic. Lets say on food, there is halal food and haram food. contextually it varies among cultures, is that what you would imply the fluidity of contextual, however its principles on correctly slaughter and the type of allowed animals to be consumed is clearly guided by a set of principles. Now going into architecture, yes most knowledge is adopted knowledge. If we were t o deconstruct it , this stands very true to the context of his speech. But there are principles in which that guides certain aspects of islamic principles that contextually makes it free off distorted values of monotheism. For example, living idolatry, these sculptures with intention of worship is very avoided in Islamic living environment. Human sculptures, gargoyles all these is avoided. With a exceptions to plants and animals in certain depictions not for intended for worship but for ornaments. Thus the term of Islamic architecture would be more better structured to have it, as Architecture that has adopted Islamic principles. In respect to the principle, from idoltry symbolism, the principles seem to give birth to extensive pattern and symmetry exploration. All can be respectfully referred in secular or contemporary, but the nature of being Islamic in principle does somehow apply.

As tall structures minaret, steeple or shikara also serve as an indicator from afar of a holy place, and the symbol at the top - crescent, cross or trident - serve as indicator of the religious denomination. One has to agree with Hashimi that in essence all architectural structures are secular, it is how a community adopts a particular style of architecture gives it a religious connotation.
