Joseph my name is Carlyn Bray, I am from Beebe, Arkansas. I worked at B-Mart Garden Center. I remember Your Mom & Dad and their beautiful baby girl. Your Mom was so sweet. She was quiet, and I wanted so badly to talk to her. Mr. Boyd (the owner)was helping your Dad. I didn't want to do anything that would go against the Amish ways. I was always paying attention to her baby girl, Ruth. Finally Your Mom spoke to me, she asked me my name & I asked her what her name was. I was just drawn to her. Being raised in a Christian family & the Baptist Church all of my life. I had people tell me to leave the Amish alone that they were a cult. I didn't believe that! Bro. Lester was so kind and Sister Rebecca was so sweet. Then one Saturday morning Your Mom came in & it was to say goodbye. She brought me a loaf of bread and said you all were moving. I felt like my world was falling apart. I always have thought of your Mom & Dad and wondered where you guys were. Then I couldn't believe it when I saw you on RU-vid. I couldn't believe my eyes, I had finally found Your Mom and Dad again. It broke my heart when you all left Beebe. We became friends with another family Abraham & Elizabeth Yoder, they would come to our house. Bro. Yoder was not happy with things that were going on with their group. They knew Dad & Mom knew the Bible and Mom would answer their questions. Mom gave Bro. Yoder his first King James version of the Bible. He knew that if the elders of the Amish found out that they were coming to the house for Bible study they would get in trouble, so my Dad asked Bro. Yoder to help him rebuild our barn & make repairs on our house that a tornado had damaged. This gave them reason to be at our house. It makes me so happy to see you all again.

I am a Christian already but even so, Rebecca inspired me with her stories of how God is faithful in answering sincere prayers in a clear manner so that His will is understood.

I loved your example of sheep following the Shephard. When we follow him He leads us to live like Him. We don't need fences, we need to walk closely with the Lord Jesus.

You’re mother is so endearing, she has so much joy emanating from her and you can tell her childhood was magical. I grew up in the hood on section 8 housing in urban decay. Moving to the country has changed everything.

After living among the Amish for 10 years this is the most accurate description I've ever heard.

this is so amazing. i had no idea that the amish were more about being "amish" than following the bible. you are so lucky to have those beautiful people as your parents. my dad died when i was 7, and my mom is a drug addict. im 38 years old and have been walking around this world lost since my dad died. you are truly a blessed man to have theguidance of those two. the fact that they stood up for what they knew was right, in spite of the consequences is truly inspiring. i doubt you will see this, but if you do just know that this series has inspired me alot, to live my life by my own standards and not what others tell me is the right way. i wish i could talk to your dad, he seems like a man who would give great life advice

Very very interesting. My heart goes out to these folks that are ruled by the law. Reminds me of how the Catholic Church was in the dark ages when regular people couldn’t read the Bible.

This was sooo interesting and heartbreaking at the same time. Heartbreaking for the Amish still stuck. My mouth literally dropped at the part where the bishop said they didn't care what the Bible said! I pray at least some seeds were planted that can't be denied.

I was so moved when she talked about going up the mountain to pray and coming back home and god answering that prayer. Brought me to tears and chills at the same time. God bless this family.

Interesting how that "ruler" told your father; "that he didn't care what the Bible said. " Then later exhibited; when he couldn't get a vote passed to silence your father (per Amish guidelines; " that he didn't care what the Amish rules were either" - he simply wanted to rule. I grew up with lots of Amish neighbors about an hour from where your mom grew up in Tomah and I knew they were strict. I was recently in Shipshewana for a horse show and was shocked by how liberal they were in comparison. I never realized how different each sect is and how hard it must be to keep up with the church’s demands.

I never knew the struggles my Amish ancestors faced that led them to leave the church. God loves us all and he wants us to be happy.

Following Jesus is like going against the world. No matter how big or small that world is, we must stand up to it and stand strong on the Word of God. I appreciate your family story and the courage you have to choose the right path. If it means to leave all the families and friends behind, we must follow the Lord. Remember Deuteronomy 6:5.

Thank you for the respectful way you are sharing your families story. My Grandfather grew up Amish, and he left the Amish too: and, became an evangelist. I wish now I'd talked with him more about his growing up years and the pain of the struggle when he left. It's the same for everyone isn't it? Often when we study scripture, there comes conflict in organized religion. I was so touched that God cared enough about the cry of the heart he so specifically answered prayers of one seeking him repeatedly.

When his mom talks about loving the sound of the horse and buggy it reminded me of going to the bog to collect turf in Ireland..it was our neighbour who used to go..so as a very small child I would race to be up in time to be on the wall and he would lift me up with what seemed like a huge hand and he would bring a cushion for me..he didn't want me in pain..like I was the first time I went along ..but cushion or not I loved it..going on old country roads with the trees meeting over the top of the road..a simple time..

Joseph, I really like your parents, especially your Mom. She reminds me of my mother so much. I broke away from the Catholic Church when I was 19. Thankfully, I read the Bible and began to realize the difference between the Word of God and the voices of the traditionalist.

That was the most awesome story I ever heard. This very peace I hunger for in my own life but have struggles finding a companion,wife,friend. I have God in my life and Jesus is my salvation. The word is God and God is love. I hope to live in this peace but only find myself deeper in lonliness.

Wow. This was such an eye opener to me. I have read everything I could get my hands on about the Amish because I was so amazed thinking they are so holy but after watching this has made me proud of my faith. I love the example of the sheep follow the shepherd and they are safe and they dont need the fence. I pondered that for a while and so amazing because If we follow Jesus we will be saved. Thank you for this series. Never in a million years did I ever think they did not back the bible and this was a eye opener for me.

We don't follow Commandments of a church or man, Only God Almighty.. 🙏

It is the same everywhere: people want to control the faith and the other person with the traditions and laws of man, not of God. The true seeker of truth reaches the place of revelation where he finds out knowledge beyond what can be explained even. Such a grace this man through his devotion to the word of God could understand and receive salvation. He would not have needed to change on the outside had he not been repelled by his people for no reason really. We need to learn all of the time and grow in terms of knowledge of God. There is great resistance against that, as it was also at the time of Jesus. God is so much greater than we are, how can we assume to know all there is to know about him at any given time?

What a beautiful story about finding the way to salvation. I know it could not have been easy to leave loved ones and friends. I did not fully understand the belief system of the Amish faith until now. It is heartbreaking that . They do not understand that the sacrifice does nothing to lead you to Jesus. This is so very interesting. I have a fascination for the Amish and their way of life. But I have always wondered how deep the relationship with Christ Jesus of the average Amish person may be. Thank you for sharing your journey from the Amish religion to a relationship with Jesus Christ. The joy of the LORD is evident in your smiles...your testimonies so refreshing. Married 50 years, we came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ after being married 12 years and having 3 children. We were also raised in a dead religion. But God...He interrupted our lives by having my husband find a Bible in the street. He read it, had me read it and over a two year period brought us to Himself. Our 3 adult children and grandchildren all know the LORD. "With God ALL things are possible".

I just wrote a long, drawn-out comment. But I also wanted to just say thank you. Thank you for taking all of the time and effort and energy and money that it required to create the series of videos. I know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that you are saving souls by producing these videos. You are turning people to the Lord. I thank and praise God for people like you. This is the mission field also Mennonite that the Lord sent me into to teach inductive Bible study. It was beautiful, complex, painful. As tradition can often be the idol that keeps one from assurance of salvation, and experiencing what God's grace is. I spent seven years laboring in love to pray and share the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, I will always be grateful for the experience of it. I loved the people. I still weep at the darkness that holds their eyes and heart in bondage to the 'Standards' they use to create another gospel which is false in how to hopefully be saved. ❤️ I was humbled to be given the privilege to lead several into a born again relationship with Christ! Some left, some stayed with the Plain Church. God does both!🙂

This is something that seems unique to the Amish way of restrictive and insular religious communities, is the enthusiasm for the way of life, especially from the women. Hearing his mother talk about how she loved the Amish life, how she cherished the events and community and how she just fell for her husband. It's a beautiful thing. The heavy restrictions aren't for everyone, and obviously not all communities are created equal, as presented in this series. But it's something that definitely seems unique in Amish communities i've seen in docs.
