In a major turn of events as his transition period nears its end on June 30th 2024, the transitional President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore has today on the Saturday of May 25th 2024 signed an amended or rather new transition Charter, that will extend his presidency by five more years, and also give him a new title.
The new charter, which was adopted by the national sitting on the extension of the transition and signed by the youthful Head of State at the closing ceremony of the seating in Ouagadougou, briefly has the following major revised articles that touch on his presidency.
One, the president of the Transition becomes the President of Burkina Faso, and thus Captain Traoré will no longer be referred to as transitional president but rather just President.
Two, as earlier mentioned, the duration of the Transition is extended by five years from July 2nd 2024, meaning that captain Traoré will remain in power until at least up to July 2nd 2029.
And three, the President of Burkina Faso, the Prime Minister and the President of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, will be eligible for the next elections, and this means that if Traore will still be in power in 2029, and willing to run in democratic elections like Chad's Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, he might remain in power for a way longer period after end of the 7 year transition that he commenced in 2022, that is if he wins the election of 2029.
