An MRI is one of the tests I received when I was first diagnosed - And it took me by surprise...
This scan has a few extra components that I was not aware of and would have greatly appreciated a heads up on. So I created this video to help you have a better first experience than I did.
This video will give you a play-by-play inside look as to what an MRI experience is like, as well as tips I've incorporated for subsequent scans to help make the test a little more comfortable. I hope they help you too!
If you are newly diagnosed make sure to check out my "Prepare to Fight" playlist for content to help you create your breast cancer support team, tackle appointments with a plan, and insights to answer the question from your loved ones... "How can I help?".
If you found this video helpful please give it a thumbs up, and subscribe so we can meet again for more breast cancer insight content.
Until then, take care and have the most wonderful day.
Sincerely,
Chelsey

So glad I found this video. I have the MRI tomorrow. I had no idea of what to expect. I have noise sensitivity... I guess I will more than likely have a severe headache all day... This video was so informative. Thank you.

I have an MRI scheduled today and just thought to do a quick search before I leave. I came across your video and what a great help...your information is very clear and precise. I think the tips are going to serve me well. Thank you so much for sharing your MRI journey. I think the medical profession often times forget we the recipients are doing this for the first time and we need more information to settle our minds and bodies to work in conjunction with what the test is designed for. Many blessing on your life journey and thank you for being considerate and thinking of others 🙂

I have a bad experience with Simon Med, Daly City California. They have to cancel my MRI scheduled before the person that supposed to call for my approval didn’t call even when they have my order for almost a month, all of my other 3 appointments like ultrasound and breast exam and other things are canceled for the last minute here at sacramento st. in San Francisco because a person called in sick. I am a very patient person, it ask your self if that was right. First the MRI is at Daly City California, but then suddenly I got a reminder that my MRI is cancelled, they will not disclose any reason why, until I called my insurance , and they told me that the person in Daly City name Jeremy didn’t do his job. So how is that helpful. My first time at SIMON MED IMAGING! I looked at yelp, the worse review ever. I never ever wanted to experience this or anyone that needed some medical attention. They failed me, my insurance is PPO and it’s good. But these place SIMON MED needed to train and get better people to care for other people. Someone that love helping people out.

I had my MRI yesterday and your tips were amazing! I used many of them - especially helpful to ask the tech to alert me on the time remaining and steps to come. Particularly helpful to know prior to contrast and knowing that meant 7 minutes to go. I didn’t find the positioning as uncomfortable as radiation. Good to have past things you didn’t like at all to make future events seem better - ha! Oh, only surprise was that my MRI was head first

Thank you for making this video. I had my first MRI breast scan this morning and I so appreciate the info in tips in this video. I am so glad you mentioned how long it would take. That was a surprise to me since mammograms take just minutes. I also had the same experience in that I didn’t feel much when they started injecting the contrast. Possibly a slight cooling feeling. The sounds were loud but I am glad you warned me! My staff gave me headphones and played music which was super helpful. About 4 songs later we were done. Overall not as bad as I anticipated!

Hi Chelsey. I had my MRI today and wanted to let you know that your calming voice and words of encouragement were in my ears during some of the time while I was in the tube. Your video was such a wonderful service to me and others who hopefully find you. I was able to stay still and calm and I made a game out of matching words to the pounding sounds and that seemed to help the time pass. I was able to have the procedure knowing that so many have come before me and that I would be okay. The most uncomfortable part was my forehead and jaw area in the head rest for the hour long procedure but I kept telling myself to relax and that “this too would pass”. You are an angel. Many blessings to you.

@@patriciawilliams5031 I am so happy that you now have that behind you and that you found (and created) some techniques to both help pass the time and keep you comfortable. I truly appreciate your feedback so much and wish nothing, but the best for you! Blessings right back!

I have just been for my first MRI SCAN. I had a brain scan and a spinal cord scan. Two hours time it was all finished. i was exhausted. Very Stiff and very wobbly. The noise was not cut out by the ear buds. like the idea of ear phone but it depends on what scan you are having. They are all different. It reminded me of Star Trek RED ALERT. Best is to close your eye and think of lovely things. The bed is very hard for a two hour stint. Had to stop once as I needed to cough. No contrast was need for my scan. If it had been prostate scan a contrast would have been used.

thanks. i must have a tear in my left rotator cuff that i didn't know about b/c putting both arms out straight during the scan caused horrible pain & i couldn't move b/c that would throw things off. therefore, i would add that everyone should be sure they are very comfortable for a couple of minutes before the scan begins. other than that, it was fine & just as expected, thanks to you. unfort, the scan did reveal a mass that is BIRADS 5 so i am meeting with an oncologist next week & then having a biopsy (weird order but that's what schedule openings were available). terrible christmas present but i'm thinking of getting a tattoo of the "fearless girl" statue as inspiration.

I can’t relax or think of a happy place. A couple of Xanax is what gets me through this procedure. I do try to do some breathing exercises as well. This time, I' m going to have a new experience, since I have to lay my head down and the machine is not going to " swallow" me completely...I will follow your instructions from now until next Thursday, the day I' m terrified to live! I’ve had many MRIs of other body parts before with no problem, but with my breast MRI I struggled by the position, my rib cage is high and the placement I had to stay in was horribly uncomfortable as I had constant pressure on my breast bone and yes the noise much louder than any of my previous MRIs. I hope I don’t have to another one anytime soon again.

I had to go for my first MRI w/ and w/out contrast for the breast this past week and it was awful for me. I'm severely claustrophobic, but in addition, it was physically painful on my ribs and solar plexus area.... it made for a very long 25 minutes. I didn't move, but when you mentioned breathing... I think this is what caused some issues with the test, it mentioned movement, but I held still... But, I was breathing heavy because of being so uncomfortable, physically, and the last 3 mins I had all I could do to not fall into panic (got hot flash and tried so hard to ride it out, longest part of the test for me)... ugh... true torture for me... Now, I have to come back for an ultrasound to see if they can spot the mass and do an ultra sound guided core biopsy, otherwise, I will have to go into the MRI again for an MRI guided biopsy which is even longer than the original test (an hr to an hr and a half).... :( ... I will have no choice but to do sedatives this time because I don't think I can do it again without it, especially for the time I will have to stay in that position. That table is freaking uncomfortable... for me, it was so painful. Praying they can see the mass on ultrasound so I don't have to go back into that MRI position. Won't know until October what they determine for the biopsy, but dreading it nonetheless. I have no family here with I live, but I have a great boss and she said she will take me an pick me up if I need sedatives for the MRI and didn't want me doing an uber.

I'm so so sorry you had such a terrible experience. I can easily see how it would be so much worse for someone who is claustrophobic, and having abot flash at the end would be so hard no to move. Truly hoping you won't need to do another MRI. Sending positive thoughts to you this morning💫💕💫

@@ChelseyTarnow thank you... I didn't realize I had a very tender area in my solar plexus... could be from the chronic GERD, or asthmas I've dealt with for years... but I will have to ask if they can also numb that area of my body to stave off the physical pain it will cause me... had no idea about this condition until this MRI... Still hoping for the ultrasound-guided biopsy to able to happen... I'll cry otherwise, lol...

Thank you for sharing your experience. I had mine last Thursday I usually would take something to help me relax but I took this appt. at the last minute and didn't have a driver. I was very nervous they ended up not being able to do it because my back was to close to the top. The machine tunnel is already small even with the Wide Bore which is about 70 CM that coil raises you up about 12 inches. It is very uncomfortable for only a few minutes they did a test run to see if I could do it. Now I am trying to find a place that has a lower profile coil seems you have to be a thin small person to have this done not everyone it like that I am very frustrated. I wanted to do this so they could get a better image of suspicious area.

@@ChelseyTarnow hi there just wanted to share that I found a place it was at the hospital where I live. This test is barbaric a man must have designed this way of imaging a women's breasts it was awful. When they pulled me out and I sat up it hurt to breath this thing pressed against my lungs while in there so I could barely breath. I thought I was having a heart attack. I am not an engineer but if they had your complete body laying evenly and not at that tilting position that would eliminate the pressure on your chest. Ive had a ton of MRIs but never breast ones, and always in an open machine in the past. My scan is tomorrow, and I had a pill called in for me, but I'm still afraid that I won't be able to get thru it. BTW a breast MRI was recommended for me 2 years ago, but when I found out that there was no open MRI option, I didn't do it. FF to now, and there is a tumor in that same spot. So my claustrophobia caused a 2 year delay in dealing with it. 😢

If radiologists really believe gadolinium contrast in the body is safe. Send out the disclaimer documents along with the full name of the contrast weeks prior to the procedure, so patients can make an informed decision at their leisure, as opposed to 5 mins before the procedure. which is absolutely ridiculous. Im guessing most radiologists know of chelated gadolinium risks and would not have it injected in them selves.

agreed this is the worst part - I have had this twice so far. the first time I had to stop and start again the second time I tried the meditation Chelsey mentioned and the breathing too - just intuitively - because restarting meant i was in that position for an hour. Even so the second time i was sobbing in tears with the pain after the third 20 minute scan. the meditation only worked the first 20 minutes or so. I decided to count off the seconds until I was supposed to be finished but when we went over by about 5 minutes I began to lose it and just sob. I am not sure what I will do the third time i am looking at preventative mastectomy at this point because this is so traumatic for me. Thank you so much for these videos you have done! Did you have to be in your period while getting this MRI?
@ChelseyTarnow
@ChelseyTarnow 2 года назад
The MRI was scheduled within a specific time frame within my mensural cycle, but I'm pretty sure it was not during my period.
@shajanthas9754
@shajanthas9754 2 года назад
Breast MRI should be scheduled within 7-14 days from your last menstrual period (the day you started will count as day 1). This is done so to maintain proper hormone balances. If breast MRI is done out of this time frame it could lead to false positives, and patients may undergo unnecessary biopsies. To minimize any hormone imbalances and to prevent false positives to a degree, MRI of the breast should be scheduled in the 7-14 day time frame. There are a few exceptions, such as newly diagnosed with breast cancer, post meno, irregular menstrual cycle, etc. Always best to ask a tech before scheduling an exam! - MR tech
