Breath test to detect esophageal cancer could be a breakthrough for testing other cancers

It is a simple test - blow into a plastic bag, analyse it - and see if the patient has esophageal cancer, a tumour in the windpipe.

Trials are underway at Imperial College London - with hopes the test could be rolled out in GP surgeries within five years.
Scientists say it could also be used for a range of other hard to detect cancers.

This is amazing! We need these low-invasive tests that anyone can take to detect issues early.

This would be great if it works. My mother died of oesophageal cancer, as her GP didn't take seriously her unexplained weight loss and acid reflux. Lots of work to be done to educate GPs.

Thank you for sharing our research far and wide. Earlier diagnosis is key for these less survivable cancers, with vaguer symptoms.

Back 2 years ago I started choking on food and having trouble swallowing, and felt like I had a continuos lump in my upper throat for over 3 months and started having blood inmy saliva on waking up in the mornings. Eventually had an endoscopy and biopsy turned out to be a hiatus hernia and the stomach acid was free flowing up into my esophagus causing inflammation and erosion so was put on ppis and gaviscon, ive now put my name on list for a nissen funoplication just to keep the acid in the stomach where in is suppose to be. Always get things checked out

The professor at 1:55 states that if the test is taken and its positive, the patient would be referred for an Endoscopy anyway, so on the basis of the information the professor provided, an Endoscopy would be required anyway.

Make another appointment to get results 5. Negative results on basic test 6. Make another appointment to test for other possibilities 7. I GIVE UP THIS IS RIDICULOUS 8. you've missed a call from the NHS 9. Don't come into clinic , wait for telephone appointment 10 . NHS STAFF ON STRIKE FOR HIGHER WAGES 😡😡😡😡😡 11. I've developed Dysphagia and have lost 1/3 of my body weight (I'm otherwise healthy but I do smoke). My GP is unable to determine the cause. I've been offered an Endoscopy but I declined, I can barely even swallow chopped tomatoes let alone allow a tube down my throat, so if it is cancer or a tumor I'm in trouble. I'm only 37. This test would be great if it allowed someone to bypass the need for an Endoscopy.

Don't hesitate to reach out to us for help. There are a number of oesophageal or stomach conditions that aren't oesophageal cancer, such as achalasia, gastroparesis, Barrett's oesophagus and rumination syndrome.

@@GutsUKCharity Hi, thanks for your message. Would you be able to tell me which of these cause/are likely to cause Dysphagia? Thanks. PS - Congratulations on the research.

@@naturehub782 Hi. I'm managing the condition at the moment. I managed to stabilize my weight, albeit at about 1/2 of my original weight. I believe I've managed to determine the cause, which I've done without the need for an Endoscopy. I believe the cause to be a goiter on the left side of my Thyroid, developed as a result of Hyperthyroidism. This is in turn interfering with my swallow mechanism. Thanks for asking.

Perhaps I'm missing something. If an Endocropy will still be necessary when a result is positive, how is this a less invasive alternative?
@GlobalizationGuide
@GlobalizationGuide Год назад
Yes, you’re missing something. Now you only need an invasive method to confirm when the test is positive, not to detect it in the first place.
@Polite_Indifference
@Polite_Indifference Год назад
@@GlobalizationGuide But an Endoscopy, an invasive procedure, will still ultimately be necessary, regardless of the existence of this test...
@RankinMsP
@RankinMsP Год назад
@@Polite_Indifference yes because at this stage it's still in the trial stage and more is needed for confirmation. You don't see the obvious benefits so maybe watch it again
@Polite_Indifference
@Polite_Indifference Год назад
@@RankinMsP More what is needed for confirmation of what? I don't see the "obvious" benefits you're right other than it providing the same clinical information an Endoscopy would provide, which would ultimately be necessary regardless of whether the test was taken or not. I don't need to watch the video again, I've already seen it.
@chrysalis4126
@chrysalis4126 Год назад
@@Polite_Indifference If the result is negative then they don't need to do an endoscopy as it has ruled out cancer and reflux can be treated with medicine.
