I love Mustangs. I have a 1965 in Daphne Blue it has a slab board fretboard. I especially love the 1970s sunburst ones. They’re like mini Strats with a cooler shape. ;) Also, the Fender Japan mustang pickup covers are practically identical to vintage ones. Sand them a bit to remove the sheen and you can’t tell the difference from the top. Cool to see it has Stackpole pots.
Yep!. Back in my early days you had pretty much 2 choices, ebony, or Brazilian rosewood. Some of the cheaper imports had buget woods but it was common to see Brazilian on US built guitars.
I've got an original EARLY 65 Mustang that's been in a case since 82 that has some electronics issues. No sound whatsoever. The electronics look amazing, as does the hardware. I can't figure out why I can't get sound from it. I'd love to be able to talk to you to try and get it back on the road, so to speak.
Thanks for watching. 90% of problems in the electronics in these are corroded switches and jacks. A good cleaning usually takes care of that. The other 10% is a bigger problem, the pickups failing. Measure them with an ohm meter, they should read somewhere around 5000 ohms. If you get an open reading well there is the answer, pickups are open. Hopefully that will not be the case.
Great work, you gave it new life. Just one question: what did you use to clean the fretboard? You managed to get rid of all the crud and it looked really great when you were done.
Beautiful work. The nut problem seems perfectly repair to me. The slide switches could be any 3 way (on-off-on) switches? I want to install a mustang-like electronics in my guitar, but I don't know what switches to get for the in/out of phase tones. Thank you for sharing.
It is a special switch. 8 solder terminals, 3 position, Dpst/off/Dpst. Allparts has the correct switch. Part# EP-026. You can even get it is Black, White, or Red. Thanks for watching.
what is the secret to the tremolo returning back to zero? I have a CV that I got used. Great little guitar, but the trem will keep drifting [also one of the Allen screws is stripped on cigar post]. It doesn't go back to zero. This is with very light wiggle, not dive bombs. Is it the springs? I have them the furthest away all the way down the post. Do the springs need to be replaced with stouter springs? I have the cigar almost all the way down as well. I just want to wiggle the bar a bit, not do any Wang Bar King Belew stuff. There is no secret silver bullet magic cure. I started dealing with my mustang in 1973, so I have had a few years of practice. Sorry to hear you have a stripped adjusting stud, that may be a problem, since there has to be several adjustments made repeatedly. First thing I am going to say is the reissue trems do not, and will not work as well as the originals. Also you do not need heaver springs, the height adjustment of the "cigar" is your tension adj. If it drifts sharp across all strings you need to raise the bar to reduce tension, lower for drifting flat. Also check to make sure strings are not sticking in the nut, or string tree. The trem has to be balanced for equal string to spring tension. I know this may not help much but there is a lot of info to cover, there are a lot of factors. I happen to have 4 Mustangs in the shop at the time maybe I can come up with a trem balancing video in the near future. Thanks for watching.
@guitarc.p.r.9675 thank you for that detailed response. Yes, I am trying to do the string=spring tension method like Carl Verheyen. I can float Strat bridges. Just a hard concept when you have to manually adjust the post after taking the plate off. It's really close but drifts just enough to drive you nuts. I just want a little wiggle like a Bigsby action wise
You showed us everything that needed to be worked on, showed us a tiny bit of actual neck work- and then the guitar was COMPLETE........I came here to hopefully watch you rewire those switches- because every time I wire mine- they don't work, and I thought you'd be a bigger help. I really am struggling with wiring slider switches, to the point that I bought a pair of 65 Mustang switches that were pre-wired- and they would've worked, but the switches were old and didn't make proper contact inside of them. WOE IS ME- but I am NOT switching to a 3 way selector.....Too easy, but I miss out on sounds. I want my guitars to play as designed. PLZ HELP.
