Gerade erst entdeckt. Ganz wunderbar! Vielen Dank für den Upload. Ruth Berghaus hat an der Frankfurt Oper in der Gielen-Zeit viel inszeniert, so den Ring und den Parisfal. Schön, sie mal mit anderem Repertoire zu sehen.

The documentaries are also fascinating- watching Paul Dessau rehearsing and in discussion.

What a treasure! This is a magnificent production with excellent camera work, staging and a superb performance from both singers and orchestra. It is such an important document and enjoyable. Severe in its black and white filming, but thank you. I don`t speak German but the combination of the visuals and the recording I have, make this indispensable.

After his death, a solemn funeral procession accompanies Lucullus towards his triumphal arch. The coffin with the deceased is led to the sepulchral monument on the Via Appia; he is followed by a number of slaves engaged in dragging a huge frieze engraved with the deeds of the famous leader. At the end of the burial, the crowd disperses noisily. Of the students they read the companies of the general in history books. At the gates of the kingdom of shadows, Lucullus eagerly awaits the turn of his interrogation; Tertullia reminds him that in that place no preferences are made. When the judge and the jurors go on to examine the case of Lucullus, they see themselves forced to assume as a testimony in his favor the frieze that celebrates their triumphs: no intercessor has in fact appeared, and the jury must be able to pronounce itself on the merits or demerits interviewee. The figures of the frieze come to life and refer to the enterprises of the general. Lucullus justifies his actions but against him thousands of deaths and fifty-three destroyed cities are raised. The only extenuating circumstance he is granted is to have developed a new culinary art and to have imported cherry from Asia. One of the shadows, the farmer, expresses a praise towards the cherry tree but the jury remains compact in its final decision: for the cherries, which could have been imported from Asia even by one man, eighty thousand soldiers have fallen. Lucullus is condemned to remain in the eternal nothingness: "To nothingness, you throw it into nothingness! / How much more will he and the others like him / on the inhuman human race have to impose, raising his slothful hands / and imposing the mutual slaughter of peoples?
