This is ingenious - have to hand it to you. It also solves a big problem with breeding egg scattering fish: fungus. It aerates the eggs at the same time, keeping them healthy.
Nice work mate. That’s my video you got the idea from :-) Great to see other people are trying it out and having success. I’ve made another one using an old box filter which is even simpler and less diy…need to test it out though…maybe do a video
Yup that is your video. I had been trying to figure out how to make it for about 6-8 months on and off but couldn't quite find something that would fit well in the height of a 5 gallon tank. Then I talked with you in the comments of your video and you spurred me into a different way of thinking that'd work in a 5 gallon tank. I'd love to see the one on the box filter. I want to get some of those but they are hard to find unless you know exactly in what corner of the internet to look for them.
I observed the explanations you gave were very detailed and did so with passion and precision. Really high dedication. I'm sure I learned a lot from what you described. Great!
Always glad to hear that I explained it well so thank you for the compliment. Do you breed any fish that you catch or breed any fish in general that this would be applicable to?
@@TheAquariumLibrary Incorrect guess, Sir. Since playing in Tanago Fishing, I rarely bring fish from fishing trips. While my nephew's fish pond, he filled it with ornamental fish purchased at the ornamental fish shop. like that Sir...😅
Do you think this method will work for Neon Tetra Eggs? I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing. Many blessings! I’ll subscribe and keep notifications on.
Iv been trying to breed my cpd fish for 2 months now with no results I'm just about to give up not sure what's wrong but something's not right. 30lt bare bottom tank. Bowl of moss in it nothing else .feeding live brine shrimp daily .72 degrees .air stone in there.tryed tap water and ro water .3 large females to 1 large male iv had no eggs what so ever in 2 months any ideas welcome?
Any tricks to get CPD to spawn in that thing? I added it to my community tank and they dont seem to go near it. Been near a week with some random moss i put ontop of it.
To the best of my knowledge they shouldn’t. What might be happening is the bbs are dying and the rotting in the catching area and causing issues for the eggs.
You’re welcome. If you are really struggling with the eggs you can remove them and treat them with the proper dosage of methylene blue per water volume.
@@TheAquariumLibrary I will see what happens coz I just started with baby brine shrimp yesterday , your last method of hatching works brilliantly , so much easier 👍🤗
Yeah let me know how that works out. The other thing I do is siphon out all the debris from the Fluval breeder box to remove all the gunk that settles there.
Yup I went two liter bottle, then funnel, then this breeder box. Have the zip ties done a good job at preventing the adults from getting below? And do you have any spawning media above the mesh or is it bare mesh that the CPDs are spawning over?
@@TheAquariumLibrary yeah I have not had any issue I did have to put a rock so hold it down. I put a small amount of subwassertang then with a pipette I blow everything down after they stop spawning
@@TheAquariumLibrary I did last week. I woke up a couple days ago and found a female neo shrimp stuck in tube. Had to rip out the airline i drilled. This time I will install some kind of mesh cover over the hole. Let me know if you have suggestions. Thanks again!
Oh wow. I had never thought about a shrimp getting stuck in the tube before. Granted I don’t keep shrimp in my breeding tanks so I never would have thought of that happening. Did it get stuck in the airline tube or did it get stuck in the uplift tube?
@@TheAquariumLibrary Yeah I had a single female neo I was waiting to transfer into another tank before I added my CPDs. She got stuck in the uplift tube right after the airline. Luckily she seems unharmed. I was on a live stream the other day and the group mentioned your video as a good one to follow to breed CPDs. I just added a little piece of plastic near the hole small enough so my fish dont get curious and swin down but big enough for the eggs to fall through hopefully. Thanks again, keep up the great work!
Gotcha. I have since updated the design so that nothing but eggs and maybe some other very small critters can fit through. But no adult fish or shrimp could get through. If you go to my channel you can see the updates that I have since made to my original design. (Edit: check out the playlist called automatic egg harvester) Also what livestream was this mentioned in? I always am looking for some good fish live streams to watch.
only problem is that is I'm having is that some of the eggs are getting white and fluffy , so I dont know if it is fungi or the eggs are not fertilized
So I was having that problem as well. What I started doing with letting my containers that I was hatching the eggs out in dry out completely before use again. I saw a reduced amount of fungused eggs. Before that, I also found that I had less of those eggs when I went shorter amounts of times between checking the container for eggs. You could always try using some methylene blue and see if that works at preventing the fungusing
My CPDs are in hard Kentucky Limestone water. The pH is around 7.0-7.5 and temps around 72-74 F Are you having random meaning that over a period of three weeks eggs will continue to hatch out or random that only half of the eggs ever hatch?
I have not measured it recently but I know that it is also high. Were you noticing eggs that had fungus on them, or eggs that developed eyes but were never able to break out of their eggs.
I’ve heard hot glue doesn’t hold up well in tanks from other people. I’ve never used hot glue as I use super glue or silicon so I can’t speak from personal experience. I’ve also not heard anything about it being toxic to the fish but this is also because I’ve never seriously looked at using it. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Do you have a fish that you’d like to try and spawn with this system?
Gotcha, the one thing I want to experiment with is sticky eggs and see if you can’t suck the wrigglers down and put once they hatch out of the spawning mop. That’s the idea on my head but I haven’t been able to try it out yet.
@@TheAquariumLibrary I breed a iitle bit of everything lol, I have been breeding CPD's for a few years now, always looking for new ways, I have seen a few other channels post something similar. Your video is one of the top for sure. I had a bunch of this stuff laying around and set it up last night. Bunch of eggs already this am. I think the biggest pro of all this is that you do not need to go in the tank at all, and it is the least stressful on the CPDs. Cheers mate
I'd agree that the biggest pro is not constantly disturbing them. If you try it out on other fish and it works, I love to hear about it. I originally got this idea from scientists who breed zebra danios for genetic work and I think it could be applied to many other species of fish. I am just limited on the number of tanks I can keep and hence the number of species I can breed and try it out on.
