Breeding Jersey Cows Using Artificial Insemination

To make milk our cows need to have a calf, and for that they need to be bred! Today Buttercup was in heat and our friends Jay and Michelle came by to artificially inseminate her. They have an AI tank and straws of semen. We had selected a bull with New Zealand and A2A2 genetics from their tank. Breeding took only about two minutes! The other three girls should be ready over the next two weeks. Looking forward to them being Momma cows next spring!

Four months that’s great Stacy! I bet both of you are excited! I hope she takes. That tail extension at the end was nice!

Just what a non-farmer wants to see. Farmer friends have told me about such things. I can't believe the cow just continues to eat. Thanks for video

We do have the information on the sires. They are all New Zealand grazing genetics and A2A2. We'll have to include some of that info in a future video. Good question! Thanks!

Hey, Wamoo! Kipps here. I just found your channel and subscribed. It looks interesting. Particularly the hay making video, as I've never seen a hay elevator actually working.

Hi there, I was wondering if I can get the info for the AI guy? A business name or something. I tried googling but I'm not getting any for Colville. Do they only do dairy or do they have meat semen? Thanks!

what are the chances of the procedure working? I mean percentage-wise.
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 года назад
That’s a great question! I wish I could give you a decisive answer, but there are just so many variables! The skill of the technician, the timing based off of your observations, etc. This season, we successfully bred all four of our heifers and cows on the first try, which is really good! 100%! But we have had animals that take up to three tries. In those cases, I feel it was probably our timing being off more than anything else.

@@vnthomas16 hey, thanks for such a prompt answer. we are about to purchase two lovely holstein sahiwal dairy cows and we have zero experience in all this so any advice regarding AI procedures is highly appreciated. thanks for taking the time to respond.

You’re welcome! The biggest factor in a successful AI will be your observation skills in identifying heats. Good luck!

The semen is stored frozen, and thawed for use. Thanks for watching!
