I own a Solo stove Bonfire. The quality of the burn is amazing. The stand was included with my purchase. I’ve had many long fires even in my front yard on grass and after many hours it does not scorch the grass at all. It’s also lightweight and easy to load in my camper. If I was making a purchase for a permanent setup at my home I might consider the Breeo but I’m so happy with my Solo Stove that would be a hard decision to make.

Yeah same. I couldn’t imagine moving the 57 lb x19 between my yards. I wish solo was made in USA or Breeo had a lightweight version. 57 lb for a little grill is more heavy duty than maybe practically needed. But I ended up canceling the x19 and got the solo.

Very helpful - particularly the observations regarding external temperature. Helpful that Breeo emits more heat, preserving the comfort of warmth around the fire in the fall without the attendant smoke. Heat-gun was a great add. Will get some cinder slabs for beneath the firepit.

Two things to keep in mind with the Solo Stove. 1) They make a heat deflector attachment for it that will reflect the heat out from the stove and onto to you. Use this in colder temperatures. 2) Without the use of the deflector, you can enjoy a fire outside in warmer months without having additional heat added to your seating area. Best of both climates in my opinion.

Ended up getting the Bree-o partly on your review, the radiant heat is what I want minus the smoke or less of it. The USA made part also sold me and the build quality. Used it for the first time this week and it's pretty impressive, used a Duraflame starter log and some firewood from a local place and (never using that supermarket cheapy wood ever again) it worked nicely.

Crazy you posted this video. A friend just bought a Breeo. Im thinking about getting one myself next year. Thanks for the info.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
One HUGE piece of info I was not considering. The radiant heat around the fire pit and that you won't be very warm sitting around it! I guess I was thinking it would be like a burn barrel and those kick out some side heat. One thing for sure, for me, is I will not be buying the solo stove because of this variable. The breeo at least has a higher outside wall temp. Oh one other thing, those infrared temp guns will be very inaccurate on shiny metal objects. It seemed the breeo when you measured it was less shiny than the solo stove, which would skew your numbers. But I believe you that the breeo was warmer (your shorts test and heat on your legs, which was a great follow-up btw)

If you want to solve the emissivity problem, which is what you're running into with these stoves, shoot them with some flat black paint, like the carbon paint for stoves or chimney pipes and let it cure. When you shoot that with the thermal camera, you'll see the true temperature. We have to do this with aluminum heat sinks we test with high voltage gear, so we do this all the time.
@MrCiaranm
@MrCiaranm 2 года назад
The emissivity of stainless will be low and give a false reading on surface temperature, that's true. But the low emissivity will mean that there is less radiated heat as well for a given surface temp. Painting the Solo with flat black should improve the side heat, but probably not as much as the breeo. The thicker metal conducts the heat to the sides better. My neighbor has the Solo Bonfire, we sat around it when it was 35F at night. It does throw most of the heat to the sky but it was good enough. I am not sure if the temps dropped well below freezing it would have been good enough.
@vicariousjohnson9823
@vicariousjohnson9823 3 года назад
I have a Solo Yukon. I'm sure these both have their good/bad points but so far, my solo is great, sits on my concrete deck without issue and gives off enough radiant heat to enjoy. We don't use it when it's very cold out anyway, so maybe that's when it's more noticeable. The lower outside skin temp was a plus for me since we have small children and a lot of friends visiting with their kids. It's hard to have a "safe" open fire, but I think this is as close as I can get. I didn't know it was made in China when I bought it, I just got it because it has good reviews and looks nice. I know Solo is in Texas, was started by two brothers and a lot of good folks are employed because of my purchase so that's good enough for me. Enjoy your firepits, the outside and your family/friend time. Cheers everyone!

I'm sold on the USA made Breeo, I do like the accessories they have too. I need something sturdier, I live in the mountains and get high winds etc. Also I like that it puts out more heat, I like the sear rim too. I will be buying the grill stand and the lid so I can use it as a heat deflector and at night when I want to go in I can just put the lid on the coals. Also like that it uses less wood. I've watched several videos and this one really helped nail it down. We really need to bring production companies back to the US, so I'm using my money to support that.
@monolith1337
@monolith1337 3 года назад
A few important points, I never saw the secondary burn going on in your solostove, you weren't using enough wood to bring the fire up to the secondary burn levels. If you add enough wood, the secondary burn from the upper air supply holes burns off the woodgas and unburned smoke. It runs far better with more wood, paradoxically.

I used to have the breeo but we sold it and went with the Solo Stove after we went camping with friends with a solo. So I have had a lot of experience with both. One big advatange we found with the Solo Stove is it is far more portable to bring with you, camping, to the beach, friends house etc. It comes with a nice travel bag and it far lighter. The breeo's built in stand made it very cumbersome. Also with the Solo Stove you can get a stand and that makes the fire pit much more versatile on where you can put it and Yes with the stand you can have it on a deck, pretty much everywhere and it won't damage the deck, grass etc. it's great. As far as radiant heat I found them both to be similar. I also found the Solo was easier to start. another advantage I found with the Solo stove was dumping out the ashes. The solo is a lot easier to deal with in terms of dumping the ashes, it's lighter and less cumbersome. The Breeo is a PITA and get used to scooping . I liked our Breeo but overall we are happier with the Solo. It's so much more portable and easier to deal with and I think gives off a better fire and the secondary flame on the solo stove is intoxication, The Breeo just didn't have that hypnotic look to the fire like the Solo does.

I agree the Solo gives out plenty of radiant heat ; we had eight people around a Solo over a cold NY night ; not sure how accurate the temp reader the reviewer uses is. And look of the Solo flame is hypnotic.

The price comparison for just the fire pits may have been accurate at the time the video was shot, but also disclosing the price for the packages you reviewed ($689 for x19 vs. $250 for bonfire as of 02/28/22) would have carried more weight for a vs. video.

Thank you for this comparison. Made in the U.S. with U.S. steel is a nice selling point for the Breeo. I particularly liked learning about the Breeo's extra fuel time, cooking accessories, and radiant heat. You answers to questions regarding cleaning and the value of the 19" over the 24" models is also helpful. In non-snow weather between 35-45 deg (f) how close to the Breeo should people sit to benefit from the radiant heat?

Thank you so much for the Infrared thermometer readings! I've been looking for a design that will allow a proper reverse sear on a steak for a while. When you said that lip reaches well over 1000 degrees - I see either of these will work great. If by chance you read this - could you do one more test? Could you place an iron skillet directly above the Solo stove's fire (maybe on some flat steel bar) and record the temp you can get on it? If that ring of the Breeo can exceed 1000 degress, while burning less wood - less efficiently, and losing more heat on the sides - I'd hypothesize that an iron skillet just inches over the Solo flame could reach 1200-1500 degrees.

Never heard of the Breeo before but I've been wanting a Solo Stove forever now! I would be pleased as peaches to own either one!! Kind of digging the Breeo more though!

Does the Breeo need to be covered or protected from rain? Can it be set up and left in one place as is, or will the weather bother it if is not "protected". I have seen where the Solo Stove recommends using a cover to protect from rain. Thanks for the video compare.

Oh snap. You're giving one away 🤣. Should've listened longer than a second. Great review though. Been doing so much research on these things. How often have you used it? You ever have trouble lighting and keeping a flame with Breeo? Watched a review compared to Solo and they said it's not as hot. You mention this but wanted to see if it was recurring

Heavier thicker materials, more side heat, cook on the ring, cooking accessories, AND Made in the USA… Breeo for the WIN!!! Thinking I need to place my order soon… now, which size??.

Have you ever tried burning pellets in either stove? If so, thoughts?

Seems like you could use the Outpost Grill with the Solo Stove, would you say that is true?

Thanks for the review and comparison info. Def like the fact that the Breeo is made in the USA!

This video is a couple years old so not sure you will see this, BUT the Breeo you have placed on the grass with what looks like pavers under it? Does that work well enough to protect the grass or did the grass burn while in the pavers? Thanks

Thanks for the review! I plan on buying a Breeo this week. Which do you prefer? The x19 or x24?

I've never experienced the 24 so I can't say. I do love the 19 tho

Great review. Seems pretty consistent in the reviews that the Solo has crazy good combustion that makes it easier to light and not have to tend, which is cool. On the flip side, I hate the idea of having to cover a firepit and have it sit in a bag. Leaning towards Breeo... Thanks for the info. This was very helpful.

I’ve had my solostove outside uncovered for the entire year. Absolutely no rusting to date and still works like it did say one.

You didn’t mention any deadline for the entree! Hopefully it’s still going? But awesome comparison!

You can’t properly measure the temperature using infrared on stainless steel because it can’t read it well enough from that reflective surface. That’s why it felt a lot hotter than what the thermometer was reading.

Am I wrong or did Breeo change the Rim design on all their fire pits, made them narrower to accomodate the new Sear Plates. One aesthetic I didn't like on the X19 was the wide rim but now its narrower?

Great review!!! Thanks for sharing the build quality and Made in USA facts. I’m torn between getting 19” or 24”. Maybe I’ll win your contest. 😃

Great review!! I was thinking of using it under a covered pergola. Would you say the Breeo is smokeless enough to do that without any concerns?

The breeo will smoke for the first 15-30 minutes until the fire is going. After that you should be good. The wood will need to be seasoned well regardless tho to achieve minimal smoke.

Would like a spark arrestor for the Breeo as we have a forest in the backyard plus that grilling attachment cost as much as unit itself.
