I am an elementary school counselor doing my best to translate these lessons so our children have this information earlier in their lives. #mypurpose

It would be so much more beneficial if we all learned this young it would reduce so many societal ills and mental illnesses. Instead we have to go back as adults and do the hard work of letting go of our "survival" defense mechanisms that no longer serve us and probably have caused us turmoil for many years and relearn the truth by practice, hard work, dedication, perseverance, etc. Instead of taking algebra I would have definitely benefited more from this information in my formative years. It needs to be taught in schools because even if parents aren't covertly abusive and cruel and unintentionally teaching their kids messages of shame, secrecy, silence, strength in moving on, embarrassment at home or cultural message etc. I am going to say from my personal experience my parents left lasting scars from silence, secrecy, lack of vulnerability, lack of empathic responses, trying to soothe by making the emotion go away so it became extremely hard and terrifying to self-soothe still learning to and more brushing away "negative emotions" because they were too difficult to handle due to lack of emotional immaturity on both their parts and trying to always save face. I want the generational cycle to end with me and this is a lot of work but I'm determined for my 4 year old daughter and myself.

Her works is so popular of course because we haven't been taught it, except the biggest reason it is so popular is because of the person she is. Great talker, very personable, very funny and entertaining, humble, brave, showing us her vulnerability, and making us feel alive and loved and capable of loving, and like she is sitting and having coffee with us. Very down to earth and friendly.

Brene'Brown's statements addresses the raw truths in our social circles. Courage to be vulnerable, honest, authentic and real, numb in overcoming that fear to be able to say what we see. How many of us "Show Up?"

Great talk. Loved that Chase mentioned "why aren't' we given these tools early in life?" It should be a required course throughout school. I believe adults would be better equipped to handle their lives.

Not so sure I would have listened early in life for 2 reasons: 1. I didn't think I needed them. You can't force water into a man who doesn't think he's thirsty 2. I thought all this talk was hogwash. Nothing like some traumatic events to make me realize that I am needy (and that's ok) and there are some better ways of dealing with life

Thanks for sharing Brené Brown's work. Criticism from the 'cheep seats' is a common experience that I have experienced in my work with people. The advice of not engaging in interactions with others who are not willing to 'get into the arena' by showing up being vulnerable is key - it is simply a wasteful use of time and results in painful experiences. I believe others do this because they are defended, fearful of engaging in the arena and feel a false sense of safety trying to change others rather than looking at themselves. Like Brené Brown's research suggests, the act of showing up in a constructive way involves vulnerability - the courage it takes to show up with Self.

You respond to an uncomfortable situation with empathy and understanding when the story comes up. You not only present yourself that way, but you also try to see the other person and understand that the behaviour of others is not a reflection of you.

This is level 1 of understanding emotions. The "triggers" of those story reactions are not even about what is triggering you in the moment. It is a locked in energy pattern from emotional events from long ago and the trigger is just a REPLAY of the same ole same ole. The roots are not in the conscious mind of thought but in the subconscious mind, energy and nervous system! When you learn about energy, you will know that the patterns, emotions, and replays usually take root before the age of 7 and CAN BE MOVED OUT so the replays stop!

serendipidus1 I would like to challenge your thought pattern as it relates to being vulnerable and courage. Courage and vulnerability came into my own personal life when I decided to apply for a job that would move me and my daughter 2 hours away from a family I had been connected to for 30+ years. That same family saying I shouldn’t move for the job or move their grandchild, what makes you think you can make it or even do that job. Those critics come from your own family friends. Then they also come from people on your job when you have the courage to apply for a promotion and they say, “what makes you think you can do that job” why would you want to go over in that department they work too hard”. Being vulnerable to take the risk of getting it wrong has taught me the ways of not to do things and has built my strength and courage muscle. Didn’t say it always feels good but so worth it.

Truth will set you free !!! I didn’t know I was inauthentic, but my heart was in pain, I finally saw , I’m a people pleaser, Take on too much responsibility , from emotional neglect in childhood. My mother would not /could not acknowledge or have interest in me. She is kindest , peaceful but too surface too sweet : but acts the emotional ideal mom in front of others. I have just tried to keep the all happy Good girl with no issues because I go to church daughter. So that image expected. I’m learning who I am

OMG! While you were talking my SFD about a situation that I’m in now, and when I stopped to listen to you, all of a sudden another story came to me. One that is closer to the truth and about me not about the whole situation. It was a major revelation That I’ve had before but this time I wrote it down. Now maybe I can actually look at it instead of dismissing it. Thank you so much and yes it’s hard.

The thing is I'm in a hard phase in therapy right now because I'm 36 years old and just now realizing my whole entire life has been run a lot by my dad/parents. My dad was very shaming and critical and definitely no vulnerability was I gonna have with him or my mom for that matter. So now I don't really know who I am as an individual I was always told what I was and who I was to be.

It's very easy for people to sit at home and type mean things on their keyboard. They do it because it makes them feel better about themselves to make others feel small. I used to let people get to me, I was bullied by my sister and others at school when I was young. Eventually I'd had enough. I have ptsd and panic disorder so I pick on myself enough, if I wouldn't allow others to treat me badly why do i allow myself to treat me badly? Anywho back to my point, Brene Brown don't let keyboard bullies get to you! You are out there doing what you want to do even though it im sure is uncomfortable as hell sometimes. That's the bravery I'm still trying to learn!

I know what it feels like to get armored up and shut off. Not only did I lack empathy towards others I was unable to receive empathy in return. It seems like our tolerance for pain in anyway shape or form emotionally is off the table and out of the question because will be considered week just for having the feelings that we have. What makes us so unique is because we have the ability to have these feelings and understand them and be able to talk about them.

Brene, what do you think about someone in healthcare, say that are a Nurse Practitioner, and have a new job. Everyone talks about drinking a lot but this NP is sober in a 12 step program. Do you think it’s appropriate to be naked and tell them, I’m sober?!? And in this program of recovery? It feels so awkward!!!

I would wait a little bit until the marble jar she's talking about is filled at least half way at new job and then yes be vulnerable open about it. All she'd have to say really is I've been sober x amount of time with the support network I have and am very grateful for this new life I'm living.

Funny thing is, reading and interacting with youtube comments (within reason) and especially responding to idiots who respond to my great rational youtube comments It's actually great for working on resilience. Around 52 minutes and she says it's a bad idea but look anything to a certain extent that we take too personally especially can be bad for us but we're going to be offended no matter what so why not prepare ahead of time and know how to handle those situations?

For the impatient ones like me here are the 7 tips in summary: - **Own your story**. Don't let shame or fear stop you from being authentic and vulnerable. - **Embrace the suck**. Don't hide or conform to what others expect from you, but communicate your needs, feelings, and opinions with respect and integrity. - **Rise strong**.
