You sound young. The 90's actually should be considered two two different decades in music, especially black music. I'm 49 and lived thru it. I would say 87-95 for one decade than 95-2005 was a different sound with 94-97 mixing it together.
Thank you, guys, for liking one of my favorite songs 🎵 . It came out in the 80s, and I'm sure you two weren't then born yet, when this beautiful jazzy kind of love song hit the fm Air Waves and MTV. What I know is that Brenda Russell is a Gospel singer. It is a modern classic song, and the other manly 2nd voice in the background is the legendary Joe Esposito. Thank God what're are Gem Z generations like you that can appreciate beautiful type of music like this, because nowadays, we don't have this kind of songs nor artist you can see singing love songs and jazzy hits like this. The 80s has a lot of very, very good songs which kind of mellow and lots of very good black artist that made famous songs 🎵 in that era.
Brenda is an extremely talented artist, another song she wrote is a gem "You Can't Hide Your Heart From Me" and "I Know You by Heart".. arranger, singer, writer... She was tapped by Oprah to take over the music production for the Broadway production of "The Color Purple"... Highly recommend the songs, you'd very much fall into them... Peace
When I saw that you were reacting to this song I was like, "oh yeah, this is gonna be good!" I have this one on my phone too. I personally always thought the little string swells towards the end was a great touch
I for years thought that was Anita Baker myself singing this song and I forgot it was this lady Brenda Russell I don't know why I forgot it was her singing song but when I heard it about three or four years ago and I looked at the credits and then I thought watch the video I was like not only she sings the similar style of music but there is a distinct to sound that she has with her own voice that's different from Anita Baker. Sultry low raspy voice and Brenda has a creamy whisper that can turn into a sudden loud melodic voice if I get water into issue then she drops back to a whisper. Quite distinctive and different from Anita's voice.
You did an amazing job with this one. It’s been a favorite for so long and was the original recorded. Angela, I can see you feeling a song the same way I do. You’re always awesome. Thanks for expressing yourself so well. ❤
Brenda: *whispers* "in the dark..." Angela: "I like that!", *looking in the camera at me whispering* "in the dark..." Me: "I like that better!" 😁 Great reaction Angela!
Produced by Brenda Russell and Jeff Hull. Written by them and Scott Cutler. Great 👍 Cover. Recent good one is from Gigi de Lana. She is from The Philippines 🇵🇭.
This song is in my top 5. Great lyrics, singing and I love that they didnt overdue it with the male (joe Esposito) voice. It was perfect... she basically wants to leave her man but cant bc the guy is playing the piano beautifully and its keeps her there. Like you said, she can feel him.
You have the best reaction channel on youtube. That's why I rock with you, the others just react to same songs. I was stating to wonder if youTube told all of you to only react to certain songs. I cancelled my subscription to all the rest and just stick with you. Piano in the dark by Brenda Russell.. wow!! Now you rolling with real music. don't stop what you doing.
When I first got internet ,many years ago , this is one of the very first songs I Googled 🙂 Another one is "When Will I See You Again by The Three Degrees
Saw her a long time ago as the warmup act for Robert Palmer on his Riptide tour, at the Fox Theater in St Louis and she was fantastic! This song was all over radio at the time and every time I hear it now it takes me back to that show.
This is a gem that happened to be on a compilation CD that I bought for most of the other tracks. I’d not heard of her or the song, maybe because I’m in England. It’s since been one of my favourites and is on my Spotify playlist. Another little known gem worth listening to on another of my compilation CD’s is Ruby Turner’s cover of I’d Rather Go Blind. Both studio version or live versions do the song justice.
This song is haunting. And you're watching the good video. For some reason they redid the video later and it sucks compared to this one. You chose well.
She has such an amazing voice..thanx for this... Memories on this one...my girl used tell she loved ..playing 🎹 ❤ She an underrated singer from..that era...
This and Get Here from 1988. Great songs. But for some reason 1979 Brenda Russell So good, so right sets a place for me. My dad got me 2 like this song. RIP dad because it is So good, so right!
Hello Angela, always love your sincere reactions I think if you enjoyed this song you will love love 💕 Chaka Khan “through the fire” or Basia’s “Time and tide” very unique voice had about four or five fairly big hits in the late 80s early 90s. Jeff
Brenda better known as blues / jazz singer. Her husband was piano player on this song. He was a rock star. And you are Star also the way you enjoy music with your beautiful personality.
Okay. I will tell you what I think of. My reaction to you watching this. You and I slow dancing and the wonder of romance. There isn't anything I don't love about you. You go Angela!
I feel that she is in love with two people and as she leaves one he calls her back with his amazing piano skills because she is caught in the middle of both lovers. How beautifully sad.
Wow…I hadn’t heard this song in a loooong time. There was a FM station in the SF Bay Area back in the day that I listened to, the format was called “Quiet Storm”. They played a lot of smooth R&B and light jazz….
Joe Sample I believe is the keyboard person on this song. He does not look to steal anything from DR …. but he does in the simplicity of his playing …..
In January 1999, Jonathan Bernstein, a film critic at Spin, wrote that Shelby Starner and Britney Spears "make up the front line of the next assault of girl-teen prodigies."
Record producer, Jim Scott, said that: "Out of all the young artists I've worked with, she was the most spectacular: a great great artist. (Shelby Starner)
